Chapter 11 - The Safe Behind the Books

Blair had not returned to the marital home since her mother's call.

She did not plan to enter it alone now.

Camille coordinated a lawful retrieval of Blair's personal property while Nolan was away, with an independent witness present.

Tessa described a concealed compartment in a study bookcase.

Blair remembered the shelf.

Nolan had insisted on installing it himself.

Behind a row of identical leather-bound volumes, they found a panel with a biometric lock.

A locksmith, working under the terms of the access arrangement, documented the panel and stopped rather than forcing entry.

Camille obtained the required authorization to pursue evidence through investigators.

The process took days.

Blair hated every hour of waiting.

When the compartment was finally opened under a warrant, it contained several flash drives, a ledger notebook, and a small recording device.

Ruiz took custody of the material.

Blair watched the evidence bags disappear and understood that she might never be the first person to hear what was inside.

That was the price of keeping the case intact.

Later, Ruiz invited her to listen to a lawfully released excerpt relevant to her father's statements.

Her father's voice came from the speaker, strained but unmistakable.

“You forged my daughter's signature.”

Nolan replied, “I'm protecting what belongs to the family.”

“It doesn't belong to you.”

A pause followed.

Then Nolan said, “You don't understand what happens if this collapses.”

“I understand perfectly,” her father answered.

“You stole from people who trusted you.”

Blair stared at the tabletop.

For eleven years, she had replayed her father's last conversations and wondered whether he knew how much she loved him.

Now she heard him confronting the man she had married.

The recording continued.

“You can still tell the truth,” her father said.

Nolan laughed once.

“You think truth keeps people alive?”

The excerpt ended.

Ruiz was careful.

“The recording supports a financial dispute. It does not establish that Nolan caused your father's death.”

“I understand.”

And Blair did.

But another detail mattered more.

On the evidence inventory, one of the flash drives was labeled B.V. — ORIGINAL.

Blair asked what was on it.

Ruiz met her eyes.

“We're still reviewing it.”

That evening, Nolan filed an emergency request to keep certain digital materials sealed.
