Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Without a Savior

By noon the financial press knew that Cole Global's rescue had stalled.
Not why.
Not who had refused to approve the paperwork.
Only that an expected multibillion-dollar transaction hadn't closed.
Adrian's board convened an emergency session in a glass-walled conference room high above downtown Chicago.
Charlotte and I attended remotely through a secure channel under my title at Hart Meridian.
I kept my camera off at first.
Adrian sat at the center of the table, perfectly groomed, with Vanessa at his right and Malcolm Vale at his left.
He looked nothing like the man who'd stood over me the night before.
That realization hurt more than I'd expected.
He could turn violence on and off like a light.
Malcolm opened with calm assurances.
"The money remains committed. We simply need a routine consent cured."
Charlotte interrupted.
"There is an allegation that the consent was forged."
A director leaned forward.
"Forged by whom?"
"That is under investigation," she answered.
Malcolm smiled without warmth.
"Let's not use inflammatory language."
I watched Vanessa glance at her father.
His hand shifted slightly beneath the table.
Her shoulders straightened.
Even now, he was directing her.
Adrian struck the tabletop with his palm.
"My wife is behind this. She's angry because our marriage is ending."
For one extraordinary second, he had forgotten there were other people in the room.
A director spoke slowly.
"Your wife has access to the financing?"
Adrian sneered.
"She has access to my refrigerator."
Nobody laughed.
Charlotte turned to me.
"Eleanor, the choice is yours."
I switched on my camera.
The image settled, and I saw Adrian's face change.
Not recognition.
Confusion.
"Good morning," I said.
Malcolm sat very still.
I gave the board my legal title and explained that Hart Meridian controlled the funding commitment through its authorized investment entities.
I didn't discuss my marriage.
I didn't describe my injuries.
I spoke about governance, document authentication, and conditions precedent.
Adrian interrupted.
"This is a joke."
I looked straight into the camera.
"No, Adrian. This is a financing meeting."
He opened his mouth, but the chair called for order.
I confirmed that no capital would move on the basis of unverified consents.
Then I offered a short-term payroll protection mechanism, subject to direct oversight and independent administration.
A director exhaled with relief.
Malcolm's composure finally cracked.
"You can't carve apart the package."
"Then explain why a Vale affiliate is demanding an undisclosed advisory fee," I said.
His eyes narrowed.
"You should be careful what you accuse people of."
"I am being careful."
Charlotte displayed the forged document.
"Can you identify who sent this to escrow?"
Malcolm said nothing.
Adrian looked at him.
For the first time that morning, he seemed to realize his savior had a secret.
Then Vanessa's phone lit up.
She glanced down and suddenly left the room.
The camera caught only a brief reflection in the glass.
But it was enough for me to recognize the message preview.
