Chapter 1: The Date That Changed Everything

Daniel stepped closer to the monitor, still wearing the smug expression that had carried him into the examination room.

"So?" he asked. "How far along is she?"

Dr. Anderson didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she enlarged the image on the ultrasound screen and pointed to the gestational measurements.

"The fetus measures approximately nine weeks and four days."

Daniel frowned.

"So?"

The doctor looked directly into his eyes.

"You told your wife your vasectomy was performed about two months ago."

"That's right."

"And according to this scan, conception occurred well before that procedure."

The room became painfully quiet.

Daniel blinked.

"That's... impossible."

"No," Dr. Anderson replied calmly.

"What's impossible is your accusation."

She pulled Lauren's medical file closer.

"Your pregnancy timeline matches perfectly with a conception date weeks before your vasectomy."

Lauren covered her mouth as tears rolled down her cheeks.

For the first time in weeks, someone had spoken the truth without hesitation.

Daniel's face slowly lost all color.

Vanessa shifted nervously beside him.

"But..." Daniel whispered.

"I was told..."

"You were told that a vasectomy isn't immediately effective," Dr. Anderson interrupted.

"The opposite misunderstanding seems to have destroyed your marriage."

Lauren looked at Daniel.

"You never trusted me enough to ask another doctor."

He couldn't answer.

Then Dr. Anderson quietly added one final sentence.

"And based on the medical records your wife provided, I strongly recommend you schedule your own examination."

Daniel looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

"Because the procedure may not have been successful."

May you like

Vanessa's eyes widened.

The confidence she had carried into the room disappeared instantly.
