Chapter 3 - THE DEAD MAN'S INSTRUCTIONS

Nine minutes and fifty-eight seconds should not be enough time to erase a life.

Apparently it was enough time to erase an archive.

The red countdown on the monitor dropped to 09:41.

Luka hit the elevator button.

Nothing happened.

Ana pressed it twice more.

"They locked the service lift."

The screen changed.

09:27.

My father's frozen face stared back at me from eight years ago.

Charles Vale stood beside him, impossible and alive in a year when the entire Vale family had insisted he was already dead.

"Charles died ten years ago," I whispered.

Luka did not look away from the screen.

"That is what his obituary said."

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"That is becoming a terrible answer."

He looked at me.

"You are right."

The directness stopped me.

He turned to Ana.

"Stairs?"

"End of the corridor."

I looked at the wheelchair.

Then I looked at the distance.

My body throbbed from labor.

Blood still soaked the heavy pad beneath my gown.

I had given birth less than three hours earlier.

"I cannot run down six flights."

"You do not have to."

Luka crouched in front of me.

"May I carry you?"

The question nearly broke me.

Ethan had not asked permission for anything in months.

I nodded once.

Luka slid one arm behind my back and one beneath my knees.

He lifted me with terrifying ease.

Ana took Sophie from my arms only after I kissed her forehead and told her three times that I was right there.

Then we moved.

The stairwell smelled like bleach and concrete.

Every downward step sent a dull ache through my abdomen.

Luka slowed each time my face tightened.

"Do not slow down."

"You just had a baby."

"Someone is deleting my dead father's records."

"Your stitches matter too."

I stared at the tattoo that disappeared beneath his sleeve.

A black date was inked along his wrist.

NOVEMBER 17.

M-17.

I saw it before I could stop myself.

"Is that your birthday?"

His jaw tightened.

"The birthday on my birth certificate."

The answer made my skin prickle.

Ana pushed through the third-floor door.

The hall beyond was empty.

"Imaging is this way."

The countdown was no longer visible, but I could feel it in my head.

Eight minutes.

Seven.

Six.

We reached a darkened ultrasound room.

Ana locked the door behind us.

Luka set me carefully on the examination table.

For one second, I could not move.

My body had gone weak from the stairs and fear.

Ana placed Sophie against my chest again.

The instant I felt her weight, something inside me steadied.

"What archive is being purged?" I asked.

Luka pulled a small laptop from a locked cabinet beneath the counter.

Ana stared.

"How did you know that was there?"

"Andrew put it there."

My heart stopped.

"My father put a laptop in this room eight years ago?"

"Not this exact laptop."

Luka opened it.

"A mirrored drive."

The screen asked for a password.

Luka handed me the brass key.

"Your turn."

"Why me?"

"Because he said only you could open the next door."

"The key does not fit a laptop."

"Look closer."

I turned it over.

Tiny numbers were etched along the edge.

041203.

I stared at them.

"4:12."

Ana looked at Sophie.

"Her birth time."

My hands went cold.

"That is impossible."

Luka nodded.

"Exactly."

I looked again.

Then I saw the scratches between the numbers.

They were not 041203.

They were 0412O3.

The last characters were the letter O and the number three.

"April twelfth, O-three?"

Luka said nothing.

I typed 0412O3 into the laptop.

The screen unlocked.

A single folder appeared.

BENNETT DEAD MAN ARCHIVE.

I stopped breathing.

Ana whispered, "Oh my God."

Inside were dozens of files.

Most were encrypted.

One was not.

READ FIRST - CLAIRE.

I clicked it.

My father's face filled the screen.

He looked older than I remembered him.

Not physically older.

Afraid older.

The video began without sound.

Then his voice came through the tiny speakers.

"Claire, if you are watching this, I failed to keep my work from reaching you."

My vision blurred instantly.

I had not heard his voice in eight years.

I pressed my fist against my mouth.

He continued.

"I am sorry."

Two words, and I was seventeen again, standing at the edge of a grave while rain slid down the back of my black dress.

"There are things a father keeps from his child because he is ashamed."

He looked down at something on the desk.

"There are other things he keeps because powerful people have convinced him that silence is protection."

Luka stood beside the door with his head lowered.

My father looked back at the camera.

"Silence is not protection."

His voice shook.

"I learned that too late."

A red bar appeared at the bottom of the laptop screen.

REMOTE PURGE DETECTED.

Luka moved to the keyboard.

"We have maybe five minutes."

"Do not stop the video."

"I am not."

He connected a small drive from his pocket.

Files began copying.

My father's voice continued.

"If Claire ever has a child with Ethan Vale, the newborn screening may activate a comparison protocol I buried in the hospital genetics server."

My eyes widened.

He had named Ethan.

Not the Vale family generally.

Ethan.

"The protocol searches for one inherited marker."

He paused.

"If the marker appears, M-17 was not destroyed."

Sophie moved against my chest.

I looked down at her tiny fingers.

"What marker?" I whispered.

My father answered from eight years ago as if he could hear me.

"The marker will not prove identity by itself."

"It will only prove that the story the Vale family built around its bloodline is impossible."

The copying bar reached twelve percent.

REMOTE PURGE: 04:11.

Luka swore quietly.

Ana stood near the door listening for footsteps.

My father took a breath.

"Claire, I need you to understand something about Luka Moretti."

I looked at him.

He did not look back.

"He is not dangerous because of the tattoos, the fights, or the rumors that follow his family."

A bitter half smile touched Luka's mouth.

"He is dangerous to the Vales because he is alive."

The room went still.

My father leaned closer to the camera.

"And if you are watching this with him, tell him I am sorry I never gave him the answer he deserved."

Luka's face hardened.

The file copy reached twenty-eight percent.

"What answer?" I asked.

Luka stared at the screen.

"I do not know."

My father continued.

"The key marked M-17 opens a safe-deposit box at Commonwealth Federal."

"Box 417."

"The box is in Claire Bennett's name."

I blinked.

"I do not have a box there."

"Apparently you do," Ana whispered.

"Inside are the original paper records I could not leave on a hospital server."

My father lifted his eyes to the camera.

"Do not go alone."

"Do not tell Margaret Vale you have the key."

"And if Ethan asks you to destroy what you find, do not believe that he is protecting you."

My entire body went cold.

"Why would Ethan ask me that?"

The recording did not answer.

My father glanced over his shoulder.

Someone had entered the room where he recorded the video.

We could not see the person.

His expression changed.

"I have to go."

Then, very quickly, he leaned toward the camera.

"Claire, if you remember nothing else, remember this."

His eyes shone.

"A name can be stolen."

"Blood cannot."

The video ended.

I sat frozen.

Luka's copy bar hit fifty-six percent.

REMOTE PURGE: 02:38.

Footsteps passed outside the imaging room.

Ana held up one finger.

We waited.

The footsteps stopped.

A key slid into the lock.

Luka closed the laptop halfway.

The door opened three inches before the chain caught.

A man's voice said, "Maintenance."

Ana stared at the door.

"I did not call maintenance."

The man outside pushed harder.

The chain strained.

Luka crossed the room and braced one hand against the door.

"Wrong room."

The pressure stopped.

Then a voice I recognized said, "Claire?"

Ethan.

My heart betrayed me by leaping.

"Claire, please open the door."

I looked at Luka.

His expression gave nothing away.

"I need to talk to you," Ethan said.

I stood slowly, keeping Sophie against me.

"Where is Celeste?"

A pause.

"With my mother."

"Of course she is."

"Claire, I messed up."

The words cut deeper than I expected.

"That is a small phrase for what you did."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Please."

His voice cracked.

For one dangerous second, I almost opened the door.

Then he said the sentence my father had predicted eight years earlier.

"Whatever Luka showed you, destroy it."

The room vanished around me.

I heard only my father's recorded voice.

If Ethan asks you to destroy what you find, do not believe that he is protecting you.

I backed away from the door.

"Why?"

Ethan said nothing.

"Why do you want me to destroy it?"

"Because you do not know what you are getting into."

"Then tell me."

"I cannot."

"You walked out on me and Sophie."

"I know."

"You left with Celeste."

"I know."

"And now you are standing outside a locked room asking me to destroy something my dead father left me."

"Claire, my mother will ruin you."

I almost laughed.

"That is your reason?"

"You do not understand what she can do."

"I am starting to."

The laptop beeped.

COPY COMPLETE.

Luka pulled the drive free.

REMOTE PURGE: 00:49.

He mouthed, We move now.

Ana pointed to a second door at the back of the room leading into a technical corridor.

I looked at the main door one last time.

"Ethan, did you know my daughter's chart would disappear today?"

Silence.

"Answer me."

"No."

He sounded truthful.

I hated that I could still tell.

"Did you know my father investigated your family?"

Another pause.

"Not until three months ago."

My knees weakened.

"Three months?"

"Claire, please."

"Who told you?"

The answer came from a different voice in the hallway.

Margaret.

"I did."

My blood turned to ice.

The door handle moved.

"Claire, open the door," Margaret said.

"You are not leaving this hospital with my granddaughter."

I stared at the thin strip of daylight under the door.

Then I heard Ethan whisper something to his mother.

I barely caught it.

"She has the key."

Margaret's voice changed.

"What key?"

Ethan did not answer.

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the door.

"What key, Ethan?"

Ana's eyes widened.

Luka looked at me.

I closed my fist around the brass key.

The laptop screen flashed one final message before going black.

PURGE COMPLETE.

Then a new file appeared on the copied drive in Luka's hand.

It had not been there before.

The file name was only six words.
