Chapter 16 - THE ENVELOPE IN THE WRONG HANDS

Charles Vale's wedding ring should not have been on anyone's hand.

According to Ethan, the ring had been placed inside the empty coffin twelve years earlier.

According to the funeral-home inventory, it had never been recovered after the coffin was opened for transfer to the mausoleum.

According to Vincent, only three people knew that inventory was false.

Charles.

Vincent.

Margaret.

Charles was dead for real now.

At least Vincent swore he was.

That left two names.

I did not trust either of them.

The stolen DNA envelope became useless within an hour.

Not because we recovered it.

Because the second laboratory confirmed its duplicate set had arrived intact.

Whoever staged the crash had stolen evidence that could be reproduced.

Luka smiled when he heard.

"Andrew would have approved."

"He did approve," I said.

"He taught us not to keep one copy."

The smile disappeared.

"True."

The second lab moved the samples into a secure facility and promised hand delivery the following evening.

No courier route was disclosed.

No digital copy would exist.

Meanwhile, Detective Chen traced the photograph of the ring to a prepaid phone purchased near the old Vale estate.

Margaret denied everything.

She also refused to answer questions without Patricia present.

By afternoon, Vale Medical's board scheduled an emergency meeting for the next day.

The trust company had frozen all disputed voting shares.

For the first time in thirty-two years, Margaret had lost control of something she could not immediately buy back.

That made everyone more nervous.

I stayed at Nina's office with Sophie.

The press waited downstairs.

My face was on television screens I refused to watch.

Headlines called me THE DEAD BABY MOTHER, which was somehow both inaccurate and cruel.

Ethan's affair became public by dinner.

Photographs of him and Celeste leaving hotels appeared online.

He called me once.

I did not answer.

Then he sent a message.

I AM NOT ASKING YOU TO FORGIVE ME.

I stared at it.

A second came.

I FOUND THE PERSON WEARING MY FATHER'S RING.

I called immediately.

"Who?"

His voice was breathless.

"Vincent."

I stood so quickly the chair hit the wall.

"Where are you?"

"His office."

"Is Luka with you?"

"No."

"Why would you go alone?"

"Because nobody tells me anything when Luka is in the room."

I closed my eyes.

"You are still making decisions like a man trying to win."

"Claire, listen."

"Vincent has the ring in his safe."

"How do you know?"

"I am looking at it."

A metallic click sounded through the phone.

"Ethan, do not touch anything."

"Too late."

"Of course."

"There is also an envelope."

My heart stopped.

"The stolen DNA envelope?"

"No."

Paper rustled.

"This one has your name on it."

"My name?"

"Claire Bennett."

"In your father's handwriting."

Every muscle in my body tightened.

"Do not open it."

"I was not going to."

"Bring it to Nina's office."

"I need to know why Vincent has it."

"Ask him after you leave his safe."

A door opened on Ethan's end.

Silence.

Then Vincent spoke.

"You always were bad at leaving drawers as you found them."

The line disconnected.

I called back.

No answer.

I called Luka.

He was there in seven minutes.

We left Sophie with Nina and two officers assigned by Detective Chen.

I hated every second away from her.

I went anyway.

Vincent's office occupied the top floor of an old brick building near the courthouse.

The receptionist desk was empty.

The elevator doors opened onto silence.

Luka raised one hand, signaling me to stay behind him.

Vincent's office door stood open.

Ethan sat in a chair.

Alive.

Unhurt.

Furious.

Vincent stood near the safe.

Charles's gold wedding ring rested on the desk.

An envelope with my name lay beside it.

"You could answer your phone," I said to Ethan.

"Vincent took it."

Vincent lifted the phone from his pocket.

"Because he was about to call police before hearing an explanation."

Luka stared at the ring.

"Start explaining."

Vincent looked older than he had the day before.

"Charles gave me the ring after his real death."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"Which death was that?"

"The one in 2015."

"Where did he die?"

"Switzerland."

"Was he alone?"

"No."

"Who was with him?"

Vincent hesitated.

"Margaret."

Ethan stood.

"She knew he was alive too?"

"She always knew."

The answer hollowed him out.

"Did she see him after the funeral?"

"Several times."

"And he never saw me?"

Vincent looked down.

"No."

Ethan laughed once.

It sounded like something breaking.

"Good."

He sat again.

"That is good."

No one believed him.

I pointed to the envelope.

"Why did my father write to me?"

Vincent looked at Luka.

Then at me.

"He wrote it the night before he died."

"Why do you have it?"

"Because he asked me to keep it until the M-17 DNA was independently verified."

"That has not happened yet."

"Correct."

"Then why is it sitting out?"

Vincent looked at Ethan.

"Because your husband broke into my safe."

"Soon-to-be ex-husband," I said.

Ethan flinched.

I did not take it back.

"What is inside?"

Vincent's eyes sharpened.

"I do not know."

Luka laughed.

"You expect us to believe that?"

"Andrew sealed it in front of me."

"He made me promise."

I touched the envelope.

The paper was old.

My father's handwriting made my chest ache.

CLAIRE BENNETT - OPEN ONLY AFTER M-17 IS PROVEN.

I wanted to tear it open.

I also wanted to obey him one last time.

"We wait."

Ethan stared at me.

"You are serious?"

"Yes."

"After everything?"

"Especially after everything."

Vincent exhaled slowly.

Then Luka's phone rang.

The independent lab director.

He put it on speaker.

"Mr. Moretti, the analysis is complete."

Everyone stopped breathing.

"We will hand deliver the report tomorrow as agreed."

Luka frowned.

"You said tomorrow evening."

"We moved faster."

"Tell me one thing."

"I cannot disclose results by phone."

"I am not asking for the result."

Luka looked at Ethan.

"Is the result definitive?"

The director paused.

"Yes."

"All relationships?"

"Yes."

Ethan's face went white.

The call ended.

I picked up my father's sealed letter.

"Tomorrow."

Vincent nodded.

"Tomorrow."

Then Ethan reached for the envelope.

"No."

I pulled it away.

His expression changed from fear to panic.

"Claire, do not open that after the test."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because I think I know what Andrew put inside."

"How?"

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

"I saw him write it."

The room went silent.

"When?"

"The night before he died."

My blood turned cold.

"You were twenty-four."

"I know."

"I never saw you that night."

"I know."

"Why were you with my father?"

Ethan began shaking.

"Because Margaret took me to your house."

"Why?"

He looked at the sealed envelope in my hand.

"To scare him."

I could not breathe.

"You were the threat."

"I did not understand."

"What did you hear?"

Tears ran down his face.

"Enough to know Andrew wrote down the name of the person who ordered his death if anything happened to him."

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

"Whose name?"

Ethan dropped to his knees in front of me.

"Claire, please."

I stared down at him.

"Whose name?"

He looked at the envelope as if it could kill him.
