Chapter 2: Every Lie Needs an Audience

Within fifteen minutes, Room 237 was no longer a secret.

The hallway outside filled with hurried footsteps.

Maverick's parents arrived first.

His mother, Eleanor Bennett, still carried the bouquet she had intended to present after the ceremony. His father, Richard, wore the same tailored tuxedo he had proudly chosen for his son's wedding.

They smiled as they approached.

"Where's the happy couple?" Eleanor asked.

Then she saw Amy.

Still dressed as a bride.

Still wearing her veil.

Standing silently beside the open hotel room door.

Her smile disappeared.

Richard stepped inside.

His eyes landed on Maverick, half-dressed, desperately pulling on his shirt.

Then he saw Penelope wrapped in the hotel sheets.

The bouquet slipped from Eleanor's hands.

White roses scattered across the carpet.

"No..."

Her whisper echoed through the room.

"Maverick... tell me this isn't real."

He lowered his eyes.

"I made a mistake."

Richard's voice exploded.

"A mistake?"

"You abandoned your bride."

"You humiliated two families."

"You destroyed your own wedding."

"And you call that a mistake?"

Penelope finally found her voice.

"We didn't mean for this to happen."

Amy looked at her calmly.

"You had two years to stop it."

The room fell silent.

Penelope's face drained of color.

Amy continued.

"I found your messages three weeks ago."

Every head turned toward her.

"I wanted to believe there was another explanation."

"I kept hoping I was wrong."

She reached into her bouquet.

Hidden between the white roses was a small envelope.

She pulled out dozens of printed screenshots.

Hotel reservations.

Secret vacations.

Late-night messages.

Photos.

Even conversations about canceling the honeymoon after the wedding because they planned to leave together afterward.

Amy handed them to Eleanor.

One page after another.

No one spoke.

Richard slowly closed the folder.

Then he turned toward his son.

"You are no longer welcome in my home."

"Maverick..."

"You'll earn every dollar from this day forward."

"And don't expect this family to rescue you."

Maverick tried to speak.

His father walked away.

Without another word.

For the first time...

Maverick looked truly afraid.
