Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Smile
Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Smile
The ballroom fell silent the moment I raised the microphone.
Two hundred pairs of eyes settled on me, expecting a heartfelt speech from the bride.
Instead, I looked directly at Evan.
"My daughter just told me something she believes everyone here deserves to know."
A ripple of confused laughter spread through the guests.
Evan chuckled softly and walked toward me, his smile flawless.
"Honey," he said gently, "Sophie probably misunderstood something."
I didn't look at him.
I crouched beside my daughter and handed her the microphone.
"You don't have to be afraid anymore."
Sophie's tiny fingers trembled.
She swallowed hard before pointing toward Evan and my brother.
"I saw Evan and Uncle Peter go into Grandpa's office."
Several guests exchanged puzzled glances.
"Our office?" Peter laughed nervously. "We were just looking for the restroom."
Sophie shook her head.
"No..."
"They opened Grandpa's safe."
The laughter stopped.
My father had left the reception only twenty minutes earlier after greeting the guests. His private office inside the ballroom's executive suite had remained locked all evening.
Peter's smile faded.
Evan quickly stepped forward.
"She's only five."
"Children imagine things."
Before he could finish, Sophie whispered one more sentence.
"I saw Uncle Peter put papers into Evan's black bag."
The room became eerily quiet.
My father, who had just returned from the hallway, froze the instant he heard those words.
His eyes slowly turned toward Peter.
Then toward Evan.
Without saying a word, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
"I think," he said calmly, "we should all watch the security footage."
