Chapter 7 - Graham Voss

Graham had worked briefly as a contract data migration specialist on a Northline engagement before moving to Hail Advisory.
I remembered him as a quiet man who talked more easily to spreadsheets than people.
I also remembered the afternoon he had asked too many questions about document retention.
Northline's security team handled the matter without my participation.
Priya made the restriction explicit.
I couldn't search old logs, interview former colleagues, or contact Graham in my capacity as an analyst.
That boundary protected the investigation, even though waiting felt unbearable.
Dana took the new information to the appropriate attorneys.
While we waited, my checking account remained empty.
My rent extension had bought me days, not peace.
Lena offered to cover the rent outright.
I accepted a documented personal loan instead, fighting tears as I signed a repayment note at her kitchen table.
My father had made needing help feel humiliating.
Lena made helping feel ordinary.
Then the bank notified me that the disputed transfer investigation was ongoing and provided updated safeguards for my remaining relationships.
I opened a new account at another institution for my salary, with fresh credentials and no family contacts.
Two days later, Belle arrived outside Dana's office.
She looked exhausted.
“I have somewhere to go,” she said, “but I need to know you won't hand me over to Dad.”
“I'm not the person who controls you.”
She showed us a string of messages from Graham.
He had instructed her to upload the license copy to a secure-looking document portal and attach it to an authorization packet.
He claimed the packets were already signed.
A second message asked her to confirm that Dad would be at the bank before noon to pressure me to withdraw any objections.
Belle said she had been told the accounts would be restored after an apology.
She admitted she knew she was helping with something secret.
“I wanted him to be proud of me,” she said.
I didn't forgive her.
But I could see the price of the approval she had spent her life chasing.
Dana advised Belle to seek independent legal counsel before making statements that could expose her to liability.
Belle nodded.
Then she said something unexpected.
“Graham wasn't building this for Dad alone.”
I felt my throat tighten.
“What do you mean?”
Belle showed us a message about an investor meeting scheduled for Friday.
One line said the Claire issue must be resolved before the trust review.
Trust review.

The same trust my grandmother had established.
