Chapter 13 - The Deadline

The lender issued a formal deadline for Hail Advisory to cure reporting deficiencies or face contractual remedies.

Dad's company was not yet ruined.

But time was running out.

And for the first time, he couldn't solve the problem by ordering a daughter to apologize.

The tape contained no hidden treasure map.

Grandma spoke about recordkeeping, independent trustees, and the importance of reading the original ledger rather than a summary prepared for a family meeting.

She mentioned a second set of paper statements stored with her lawyer.

Arthur Keene searched his archived files and found correspondence referencing a custodial account whose annual statements had stopped arriving.

Dana and Malcolm worked to obtain records properly.

They emphasized that neither the tape nor the letters proved every accusation.

Still, each document gave us a precise question to ask.

Nathaniel's settlement offer expired on Thursday at five.

At 4:40, he called me directly despite knowing I had counsel.

“I'm giving you one last chance to save your mother.”

“What does Mom need saving from?”

“The house is tied to the business.”

His words landed like a weight.

He said the lender might seek repayment and the family home might be at risk under separate obligations.

I told him the consequences of his borrowing were not mine to absorb by signing a false agreement.

His tone sharpened.

“You would let your mother become homeless?”

“You are the one who signed the loans.”

He said Grandma would be ashamed.

For once, that weapon missed.

“Grandma told me to read the original numbers.”

There was silence.

Then he asked where I had heard that.

I said nothing.

He ended the call.

Five minutes before the settlement deadline, Belle forwarded a voice message from Graham.

He was demanding the return of a USB drive he claimed she'd stolen.

She had never mentioned a drive to us.

When Dana asked her lawyer about it, we learned Belle had found it in the locked desk drawer at home.

She hadn't opened it.

Graham had called twelve times in two hours.

At 4:59, my father sent one more message.
