Chapter 1 — The Lockout

Vanessa lunged toward Daniel before anyone else could move.

"You can't do this!" she screamed, her heels striking the hardwood as she crossed the dining room.

Daniel simply looked at her.

"I already did."

She snatched her own phone from the table with trembling hands. The Whitmore Family Trust application was already open. She refreshed it once.

Then twice.

Then again.

Nothing.

The investment accounts had vanished.

The estate accounts showed zero available authority.

Her corporate expense cards flashed a single red notification.

ACCESS DENIED.

"No..."

Her breathing became shallow.

"There has to be a mistake."

Blake hurried beside her.

"Try again."

She did.

The answer never changed.

Daniel calmly returned to his seat, picked up the cloth napkin from the floor, folded it neatly, and placed it beside his untouched dinner plate.

"I warned you to enjoy the meal."

Patricia finally stood.

"What game are you playing?"

Daniel looked directly at his mother.

"No game."

He removed a sealed envelope from inside his jacket.

"My attorney suggested I wait until after Father's birthday dinner."

He slid the envelope across the table.

Patricia opened it.

The room became silent.

Every page carried official court seals.

Every signature belonged to Richard Whitmore.

Her husband.

Daniel's father.

The first sentence was enough.

Effective six weeks ago, Daniel Whitmore is appointed sole trustee of the Whitmore Family Trust.

Patricia's hands began shaking.

Vanessa grabbed the papers.

"This is fake!"

Daniel didn't argue.

He simply replied,

"The probate judge didn't think so."
