Chapter 3: Learning to Stay

Over the next three days, Chloe recovered quickly.

She insisted that only Dr. Clara should remove her cast.

Each morning, Julian arrived early.

Not to ask about the baby.

Not to beg.

Simply to sit beside Chloe's bed.

He read stories.

Braided Chloe's hair terribly.

Made paper cranes from hospital menus.

Clara watched from the doorway.

For the first time...

She wasn't seeing the man who abandoned her.

She was seeing the father his daughter deserved.

On Chloe's discharge day, she held Clara's hand tightly.

"When your baby comes..."

"...can I visit?"

Clara smiled.

"I think he'd like that."

Julian looked at her in surprise.

"He?"

Clara nodded.

"I'm having a boy."

His eyes immediately filled with tears.

"Our son..."

She raised a hand gently.

"No."

"My son."

"Whether he becomes yours..."

"Depends on what you do after today."

Julian nodded.

There was no argument.

No excuses.

Only acceptance.

"I'll earn the chance."

Not because he expected forgiveness.

Because this time...

He finally understood what love required.

Showing up.
