Chapter 2: The Question That Changed Everything

The hospital room fell silent.
Even the steady rhythm of the heart monitor seemed quieter after Chloe's innocent question.
"Daddy..."
"...is the baby in Dr. Clara's tummy my little brother?"
Julian stared at his daughter.
Then at Clara.
His lips parted, but no words came.
Clara slowly walked to Chloe's bedside and gently tucked the blanket around her.
"Sweetheart," she said softly, "you need to get some rest."
"But..."
Chloe looked between them with the honesty only children possessed.
"You both look sad."
Neither adult answered.
After Chloe finally drifted to sleep, Clara quietly stepped into the hallway.
Julian followed.
The fluorescent lights cast long shadows across the empty corridor.
"I deserve that question," he said.
"You deserve many things," Clara replied.
"But answers aren't one of them."
He lowered his head.
"I've replayed the day you left a thousand times."
"And every time..."
"I hear myself saying the wrong thing."
"You didn't say the wrong thing."
"You said nothing."
Silence settled between them.
Finally, Julian spoke again.
"My mother left when I was six."
"My father told me families always fall apart."
"I believed him."
"So when you asked if I loved you..."
"I thought if I admitted it..."
"...I'd destroy you eventually."
Clara looked at him for a long moment.
"I didn't leave because you were afraid."
"I left because you chose fear over us."
The words landed harder than any accusation.
Julian closed his eyes.
"I know."
At that moment, Dr. Maya approached with a small envelope.
"Clara."
"The prenatal lab results came in."
Julian instinctively looked toward the envelope.
Clara accepted it without opening it.
Then she quietly slipped it into her pocket.
Some answers...
Could wait.
Others...
Had already come too late.
