Chapter 17 - A Son's Final Choice

For one terrible second, I thought Daniel had betrayed me again.

Then he stepped through the doorway with both hands visible and told the deputy that Vale had been trying to enter the sealed corridor.

"I followed him from the ballroom," Daniel explained. "I didn't want him to reach the safe first."

Vale protested that the folder belonged to his legal team.

Rebecca calmly asked him to provide evidence of ownership and instructed him not to touch the recovered records.

He refused.

The deputy separated us and took statements.

Daniel stood near the staircase while Vale was escorted away from the restricted area.

His face looked older than it had the day before.

"I know you don't trust me," he said.

"Trust isn't something we can settle with a sentence," I replied.

"I understand."

"Do you?"

He lowered his eyes.

"Yesterday I watched Madison make you feel unwanted. I kept quiet because I didn't want another argument. I let my own fear matter more than your dignity."

I appreciated his words without pretending they repaired the damage.

"What happens next won't be decided by how sorry you feel," I said. "It will depend on what you do when protecting someone costs you something."

He nodded.

We returned to the residence, where Lily was building a crooked village out of wooden blocks.

Daniel sat on the rug beside her.

I watched him quietly explain that adults had made mistakes and that none of them were her responsibility.

He did not ask his daughter to choose sides.

For that, I was grateful.

Later Rebecca told me the bank had confirmed no effective transfer of ownership and that the disputed vendor payment remained frozen while investigators reviewed the authorization.

Vale had been advised not to return to the lodge pending the investigation; further decisions would belong to law enforcement and the courts.

For the first time in two days, there seemed to be room to breathe.

Then Lily found me in the kitchen.

"Grandma," she said, "Mommy told me we're leaving tomorrow."

I crouched down.

"Did she tell Daddy?"

Lily shook her head.

"She said if I told him, he'd make us stay."

I looked up at Daniel across the room.

The last secret Madison had placed on her daughter's shoulders had just come into the light.
