Chapter 14 - The Ballroom Announcement

The ballroom was filled with unfamiliar faces and familiar employees who looked deeply uncomfortable.

Holiday garlands hung above a presentation screen showing the lodge's logo.

Vale stood beneath it, smiling as if the entire morning belonged to him.

"Thank you for coming on such short notice," he began.

His speech described fresh investment, improved governance, and new leadership.

Then he gestured toward the door.

"Please welcome Daniel Caldwell, the future of this extraordinary property."

A few guests applauded uncertainly.

Daniel remained beside me.

He did not move.

Vale repeated his invitation, his smile tightening.

My son finally stepped forward, took the microphone, and looked out over the crowd.

"I'm not the owner," he said.

The room fell silent.

"I never authorized a transfer. My mother founded this lodge with my father, and she still controls it."

Vale approached quickly.

"Daniel, this isn't the place for family confusion."

Daniel stepped aside so everyone could see me.

"I also need to say something else. I allowed my wife to humiliate my mother yesterday. I knew her hotel room had been canceled, and I didn't stop it."

The confession hurt to hear even after everything we had discovered.

"That was cowardly," he continued. "And I won't help hide anything else."

Vale tried to interrupt, but Rebecca came forward and identified herself as counsel for the controlling owner.

She calmly stated that no sale or leadership transfer had been approved and that materials presented as proof of authority were disputed.

Marcus asked the audiovisual team to end the presentation.

The investors began whispering.

One man raised a question about the alleged retirement-fund diversion.

Rebecca said audited statements would be provided through proper channels.

Vale turned toward the exit, but a deputy waiting near the ballroom doors asked to speak with him concerning the threatening communications.

He was not arrested.

He did, however, lose the room's attention for the first time.

I thought the morning was over.

Then Madison stepped onto the stage, reached for the microphone, and said, "There's something none of you understand about Elaine Caldwell."

I watched my son tense.

She looked directly at me.

"Thomas didn't trust her with everything either."
