Chapter 2: Secrets That Couldn't Stay Hidden

The police investigation uncovered something Diane never expected.

The AirTag wasn't the only one.

Using purchase records and her Apple account, investigators found three additional trackers.

One had been hidden inside Mark's car months earlier.

Another had been taped beneath our stroller when Lily was younger.

The last one...

Was discovered inside a suitcase we had taken on vacation the previous summer.

Mark sat at the kitchen table staring at the report.

His childhood suddenly made sense.

His mother had always wanted to know where everyone was.

Who they talked to.

How long they stayed.

She called it love.

It wasn't.

It was control.

When confronted, Diane admitted everything.

"I was afraid you'd move away."

"I was afraid Lily would forget me."

"I only wanted to stay close."

Mark's eyes filled with disappointment.

"You weren't staying close."

"You were following us."

Lily quietly walked into the room carrying the pink backpack.

She placed it on the table.

"I don't want Grandma to buy me presents anymore."

The room fell silent.

Not because of anger.

Because an eight-year-old had already understood what every adult was still struggling to accept.

Trust, once broken, isn't repaired with gifts.
