Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Tracker

Diane's confident smile vanished the instant she saw the clear evidence bag.
Her hands trembled.
"What... what is this?" she asked, forcing a laugh that sounded painfully fake.
The mall security officer stepped between us.
"Ma'am, please stay where you are."
"I bought that backpack," Diane quickly blurted out. "There must be some misunderstanding."
Mark arrived only moments later, breathless from running through the mall.
He looked at his mother.
Then at Lily.
Then at the evidence bag.
"What did you put in my daughter's backpack?"
"I didn't!" Diane snapped.
"It must have been left there during shipping."
I quietly handed Mark my phone.
He watched Lily's recorded explanation.
He looked at the timestamp showing the AirTag had followed us since early that morning.
Then he opened the family group chat.
11:14 a.m.
"How's your shopping trip? Buy Lily anything sweet?"
His face hardened.
"We never told you we went shopping."
Diane opened her mouth but couldn't answer.
Mall security requested that local police take custody of the AirTag.
Within an hour, officers confirmed the tracker was registered to an Apple account belonging to Diane.
She burst into tears.
"I was only trying to keep my granddaughter safe!"
But the explanation made no sense.
"If you wanted us safe," Mark said quietly, "you would have told us."
Instead...
She had hidden it.
Secretly.
Inside an eight-year-old's backpack.
No one said another word.
