Chapter 4 - The Gate

Jack found the emergency exit within seconds.

Rebecca called the manager and documented the gate closure rather than assuming it was an attack.

I had spent too much of my career learning the difference between evidence and suspicion to invent certainty now.

But the black SUV idling outside the chain-link fence did not help.

When the facility manager arrived, the SUV drove away.

Its license plate was obscured by a muddy bike rack.

We requested camera footage through the proper channels and left with authenticated copies of the key documents.

By midnight we knew Whitmore Event Holdings had purchased event equipment, luxury vehicles, and a waterfront lease during years when Dad had canceled treatment.

The ledger also showed dozens of transfers described only as caregiver expenses.

Some may have been legitimate.

But the amounts were astonishing, and several were paid to an account under Natalie's maiden name.

I called my sister again.

This time she answered from somewhere noisy.

"Are you alone?" I asked.

"I can't talk."

"Your name is on the medical trust ledger."

A sharp breath.

"Claire, please listen."

"I am listening."

"If you make this public before you know everything, Dad will be the one who pays."

"He's been paying for years."

"You don't understand what Evan can do."

The line cut off.

An hour later Rebecca obtained a temporary order preserving the records and preventing unilateral transfer of remaining trust assets.

The amount still in the account was far lower than it should have been.

At dawn Gloria posted a statement online.

It described me as an estranged daughter exploiting my father's illness to attract attention.

An edited video from the gala showed me grabbing Evan's wrist, but not the slap that came first.

The comments multiplied faster than I could read.

A retired sailor who'd witnessed the attack contacted Jack with the complete recording.

I wanted to release it immediately.

Rebecca advised me to preserve the original and consider what releasing it would do to Dad.

I chose to wait.

Then a hospital administrator called.

Someone claiming to be my father's legal guardian had requested his discharge against medical advice.

The paperwork named Evan.
