Chapter 12 - The Forged Admiral

The authorization claimed I had approved a $96,000 disbursement as reimbursement for my father's care.
It included a photocopy of my military identification and a signature assembled from my old correspondence.
The document was false.
I gave the investigator my actual signature records and notified the appropriate Navy security office that my identity might have been misused.
For the first time the conspiracy threatened to follow me into my professional life.
I was furious in a way that made my hands feel remarkably steady.
Jack watched me organize the evidence and said nothing until I'd finished.
"You don't have to fight this as an admiral," he told me.
"You're allowed to be the daughter they hurt."
I wanted to tell him those two selves were impossible to separate.
Instead I asked him what Chaplain Bennett had known.
Jack brought out an old audio recorder he'd been safeguarding under the chaplain's written instructions.
It held several conversations with Gloria and Evan about the trust.
We listened with Rebecca present.
Gloria insisted the payments were family property.
Evan demanded the chaplain stop asking questions.
Then the recorder captured a sentence that made my stomach turn.
"Claire will keep paying as long as we keep Richard alive enough to look at."
The speaker was Evan.
No dramatic music followed.
There was only the scrape of a chair and the chaplain's anguished protest.
Rebecca secured the original recording and reviewed legal issues surrounding its use.
I walked out onto the balcony of my apartment and looked across the river at ships moving in the distance.
I'd spent half my life sending money to people who spoke of my father as an expense to manage and me as a source to exploit.
At dawn my commanding officer called about an unrelated public rumor suggesting I'd misused military resources to harass relatives.
I disclosed the relevant facts and records through appropriate channels.
He listened, then said simply, "Keep the Navy's resources separate from your family dispute."
"Yes, sir."
I appreciated the clarity.
A few hours later the bank produced an internal alert showing that someone had attempted to withdraw the trust's remaining funds the night before.

The person who presented the withdrawal request was Natalie.
