Chapter 4 - THE RED DRIVE

The police arrived at the estate within twelve minutes.

By then, Graham had moved most of the remaining guests into the main ballroom while officers secured the parking lot and service corridors.

Nobody was celebrating anymore.

The flowers still smelled sweet.

The candles still flickered.

The cake still stood untouched beneath a wall of white roses.

But the room felt like a crime scene wearing a wedding dress.

Lily sat beside me in a private office near the ballroom.

A female officer named Detective Mara Cole crouched in front of her.

"You are not in trouble."

Lily nodded.

"I know."

"I just need you to tell me about the man who gave you the red drive."

"My dad."

"What is his name?"

"Ryan Bennett."

"When did you see him?"

"Before dinner."

"Where?"

"Near the room with all the coats."

Detective Cole glanced at me.

"Did you know he would be here?"

"No."

She returned her attention to Lily.

"Did he look scared?"

Lily thought for a moment.

"Yes."

"Did he say anyone was following him?"

"No."

"Did he tell you to hide the drive from your aunt?"

"Yes."

"Anyone else?"

Lily shook her head.

Detective Cole stood.

"I would like to see the drive."

I removed it from my purse.

My fingers did not want to let go.

"Can you copy it first?"

She nodded.

"That is exactly what we will do."

Graham was standing near the office window.

He had removed his tuxedo jacket.

His bow tie hung loose around his neck.

He looked like a man who had aged ten years since dinner.

"I have laptops in the library," he said.

Detective Cole shook her head.

"We will use department equipment."

"How long?"

"As long as it takes."

Graham accepted that.

Vanessa did not.

Her voice exploded in the hallway.

"You cannot search my purse!"

Everyone turned.

Another officer guided her into the office doorway.

"Ma'am, we asked for consent. You declined. We are not searching it."

Vanessa looked at Detective Cole.

"Am I under arrest?"

"Not at this time."

"Then I am leaving."

"You are free to leave."

Vanessa looked surprised.

So was I.

The detective continued.

"But if you leave, please understand that we will document your departure while an investigation is beginning."

Vanessa laughed.

"An investigation into what? Bad family conversation?"

Detective Cole's expression did not change.

"Possible financial crimes. Possible stalking. Possible vehicle tampering. And a possible threat connected to a child."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"I did not touch Claire's car."

Nobody had told her the car had been touched.

Detective Cole noticed.

So did Graham.

So did I.

The room went quiet.

Vanessa recovered quickly.

"I saw the officers outside."

Detective Cole nodded.

"Of course."

She wrote something in her notebook.

Vanessa glared at me.

"This is your fault."

I stood.

"No."

My voice surprised even me.

"For once, this is yours."

She stepped closer.

"You have always wanted to take my place."

I stared at her.

"I do not want anything you have."

"You want Graham."

I almost laughed.

Graham looked disgusted.

"Do not drag him into this."

"You are already standing beside him."

"Because you stole from my daughter."

"I did not steal anything."

"Then show me the trust records."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because you are not the trustee."

Detective Cole looked up.

"Who is?"

Vanessa froze.

I answered.

"Apparently she is."

The detective wrote that down too.

Vanessa turned toward the hall.

"I am done."

Graham stepped into her path.

Not threateningly.

Simply enough that she had to stop.

"Where is Ryan?"

"How would I know?"

"He was in your bridal suite hours before you married me."

"He came to threaten me."

"The video did not look threatening."

"Because it was edited."

"Then give the police your phone."

Vanessa's hand moved instinctively toward the clutch under her arm.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because it contains privileged information."

Graham laughed once.

"You are not a lawyer."

"Business information."

Detective Cole stepped between them.

"Mr. Ellison, do not pressure her to surrender property."

Graham stepped back.

"Fine."

Vanessa smirked.

Then the detective added, "If we develop probable cause, we will obtain it another way."

The smirk vanished.

Vanessa left with my mother.

I watched them disappear down the hallway.

Lily leaned against me.

"Can we go somewhere safe?"

The question hurt more than anything else had.

I kissed the top of her head.

"Yes."

Detective Cole recommended a hotel.

Graham offered to arrange one under a different name.

I resisted until the detective told me it was sensible not to use my home address that night.

Then I agreed.

Before we left, an officer made a forensic copy of the red drive.

The original stayed sealed in an evidence bag.

A working copy was opened on a department laptop in front of me.

There were seven folders.

BANK.

TRUST.

RYAN.

VANESSA.

ELLISON.

PHOTOS.

IF I DISAPPEAR.

The last folder made my stomach twist.

Detective Cole looked at me.

"Do you want to continue?"

"Yes."

She opened IF I DISAPPEAR.

There was one video file.

Ryan appeared on screen sitting inside a car.

It was dark outside.

Rain tapped the windshield behind him.

He looked exhausted.

"Claire, if you are watching this, I probably failed to fix what I helped break."

I felt Lily shift beside me.

I wanted to send her out.

She grabbed my hand.

"I want to hear Dad."

I let her stay.

Ryan continued.

"I need you to know that I did not leave because I stopped loving Lily."

His voice cracked.

"And I did not leave because I stopped loving you."

I closed my eyes.

Too late.

Whatever explanation came next, it was too late for that sentence.

"I left because Vanessa had enough information to put me in prison."

Detective Cole leaned closer.

Ryan looked directly into the camera.

"I helped her move money out of Lily's trust."

My stomach dropped.

"At first, I thought it was temporary."

He rubbed both hands over his face.

"Vanessa told me the trust was badly managed and she needed a bridge loan for one of her investments."

He laughed bitterly.

"I was stupid enough to believe her."

The video cut briefly, then continued.

"When I realized she was using shell companies, the money was already gone."

A number appeared on the screen in a document Ryan held up.

$842,000.

I stopped breathing.

He had helped move eight hundred forty-two thousand dollars belonging to Lily.

My daughter.

A child who had once cried because I could not afford the same summer camp her classmates attended.

Ryan's voice continued.

"I tried to put it back."

"With our money," I whispered.

As if he could hear me, he nodded on screen.

"I drained our savings. I refinanced the house. I borrowed against everything I could."

My eyes filled with tears.

"But it was not enough."

Then his expression changed.

Fear.

"When I told Vanessa I was going to confess, she showed me copies of documents with my signature on transfers I never approved."

Detective Cole paused the video.

"Do you recognize his signature?"

"Yes."

"Could it have been forged?"

"I do not know."

She resumed.

"She told me if I went to the police, she would make it look like I stole everything."

Ryan looked down.

"And she could."

His next words were quieter.

"Because I was guilty enough to be believable."

I hated him for that.

I pitied him for that.

I did not forgive him.

The video continued.

"Then she told me something else."

Ryan's face hardened.

"She said Claire would lose Lily if I was arrested."

I stared at the screen.

"She said she had records showing Claire was unstable."

My hands turned cold.

"Medical records. School reports. A statement from someone claiming Claire left Lily alone overnight."

I stood so suddenly my chair scraped the floor.

"That never happened."

Detective Cole held up a hand.

"I know. Keep watching."

Ryan continued.

"I knew the records were fake. But Vanessa had already built a file."

He swallowed.

"And she told me our mother-in-law would support her."

I felt sick.

My mother.

Again.

"So I left."

Ryan looked straight into the camera.

"I thought if I disappeared, Vanessa would stop."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I was wrong."

The video ended.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then Detective Cole opened the folder labeled TRUST.

Inside were bank statements, transfer confirmations, scanned signatures, and photographs of handwritten notes.

She clicked the first statement.

The trust had once held $1,174,220.

The most recent balance was $63,411.

I covered my mouth.

Lily looked at the screen.

"Is that my money?"

I nodded.

She frowned.

"Why did Aunt Vanessa take it?"

I had no answer.

Detective Cole opened a spreadsheet.

The transfers went to five companies.

Three were unfamiliar.

One belonged to Ryan.

And the fifth made Graham stand up so quickly his chair hit the wall.

ELLISON COASTAL DEVELOPMENT LLC.

He stared at the name.

"That company is mine."

Detective Cole looked at him.

"Did you receive money from Lily's trust?"

"Not knowingly."

He leaned toward the screen.

"When was this transfer?"

She checked the date.

His face changed.

"That was the week Vanessa invested in my project."

I looked at him.

"She used Lily's money to buy into your company?"

Graham's jaw tightened.

"It looks that way."

Then Detective Cole opened the ELLISON folder.

There were scanned contracts inside.

One document had been prepared for signature the next morning.

It transferred controlling interest in Graham's waterfront development to a holding company called VNR Capital.

Graham whispered, "VNR."

I knew before he said it.

Vanessa.

Ryan.

"Vanessa and Ryan," I said.

Detective Cole nodded.

"Possibly."

Graham stared at the screen.

"If I had signed this tomorrow, she would have controlled the project."

I felt Lily squeeze my hand.

"So my video stopped it?"

Graham turned toward her.

For the first time all night, his expression softened.

"Yes."

He crouched to her level.

"You may have saved me from making the biggest mistake of my life."

Lily looked down.

"I just wanted Mom to know why Dad left."

Graham nodded.

"You did that too."

Detective Cole clicked one last file.

A photograph opened.

It showed Vanessa sitting at a restaurant table with a man in a dark coat.

His face was turned away.

The date stamp was three weeks earlier.

Ryan had written a note beneath it.

VANESSA'S NEW PARTNER. NOT ME. FOLLOW THE PROPERTY RECORDS.

Graham stared at the image.

"I know that man."

Detective Cole looked at him.

"Who is he?"

Graham's voice was barely above a whisper.

"My father's business partner."

He swallowed.

May you like

"And the man who controls our family trust."
