Chapter 13 - CHARLES MERCER

I had seen Charles in photographs.
At the wedding.
In Ryan's files.
In the old picture with my father.
But standing twenty feet from him in the abandoned terminal, I saw something I had missed before.
Vanessa looked like him.
Not dramatically.
Not enough that anyone would notice without knowing.
But the shape of the eyes.
The narrow jaw.
The way one eyebrow lifted when he was angry.
My sister had inherited all of it.
Charles pointed the gun toward the floor.
That did not make me feel safer.
"Put the drive in the locker," he said.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You brought him."
Her face had changed.
She looked frightened.
"No."
Charles smiled.
"She never was very good at following instructions."
Vanessa backed away.
"You said you would stay out of sight."
"And you said you would handle Claire."
His eyes moved to me.
"Clearly neither of us got what we wanted."
I kept one hand in my coat pocket around the decoy drive.
"The police know I am here."
"Of course they do."
Charles sounded bored.
"I watched them arrive."
My heart kicked.
"Then you know you cannot leave."
He smiled.
"Everyone can leave if they plan far enough ahead."
Vanessa snapped, "Give her the agreement."
Charles looked at her.
"You think that paper matters now?"
"You promised."
"I promised many things."
Something passed between them.
Not affection.
History.
Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.
"You told me Dad stole from you."
Charles laughed.
"Daniel stole my future."
"He owned twenty-five percent."
"Because Robert was sentimental."
"Because Daniel built the company."
Charles's expression hardened.
"Careful."
Vanessa swallowed.
I suddenly understood.
She was not his partner.
Not really.
She was another person he had told a story to.
Another person who thought she could use him without being used in return.
"Vanessa," I said softly.
She looked at me.
"He is going to blame you."
Charles laughed.
"Do not be dramatic."
"He already has."
I kept my eyes on her.
"The accounts are in your name. The trust transfers have your authorization. Ryan's files connect you to VNR. You attacked the guard."
Her face paled.
"Charles, you said the cameras were handled."
He did not answer.
That silence was enough.
Vanessa stared at him.
"You knew there were cameras."
"Most hotels have cameras."
"You told me the hallway was clear."
"I told you what you needed to hear."
Her mouth opened.
No sound came out.
For the first time in my life, I saw Vanessa understand what it felt like to be manipulated by someone who thought they were smarter than her.
She looked from Charles to me and back again.
"You said VNR was mine."
Charles smiled faintly.
"It is registered that way."
"You said the waterfront project would belong to me."
"If Graham signed."
"You said you would protect me if anything went wrong."
Charles's expression barely changed.
"I protected the operation."
Vanessa stared at him.
"I am your daughter."
"And you were compensated."
The sentence seemed to physically strike her.
I saw her shoulders drop.
For years, Vanessa had measured love in access.
Who got invited.
Who got praised.
Who received money.
Who stood closest to power.
Now her biological father reduced their relationship to compensation.
"You never wanted me," she whispered.
Charles looked impatient.
"This is not the time."
"You used me to get close to Graham."
"You wanted Graham."
"I wanted you to think I was useful."
The honesty shocked both of us.
Charles's eyes narrowed.
Vanessa laughed, but there were tears on her face.
"That is pathetic, isn't it?"
He did not answer.
She looked at me.
"Say it."
"What?"
"That I deserve this."
I shook my head.
"I think you deserve consequences for what you did."
"Same thing."
"No."
"You always loved that difference."
"What difference?"
"Between being better and looking better."
I almost laughed.
"Vanessa, I spent half my life trying not to make you angry."
"Because you knew Mom loved me more."
"Because when you were angry, everyone else paid for it."
She flinched.
Charles watched us with contempt.
"This family therapy session is touching."
I looked at him.
"You built half of it."
His smile disappeared.
"My father spent years cleaning up the damage you created."
"Daniel was weak."
"He stayed and raised a child who was not biologically his."
I glanced at Vanessa.
"That sounds stronger than anything you ever did."
Charles's jaw tightened.
Vanessa looked at me as if hearing the idea for the first time.
Dad had known.
Dad had still tucked her into bed.
Still paid for braces.
Still taught her to drive.
Still called her his daughter.
Charles had biology.
Daniel had fatherhood.
The difference suddenly looked enormous.
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Charles looked at me.
"The drive."
"Why?"
"Because I asked nicely."
"You have a gun."
"Then consider this the less nice version."
I removed the red drive slowly.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Do not give it to him."
Charles turned the gun toward her.
"Stop."
She froze.
My blood went cold.
"She is your daughter."
He looked at me.
"Biology is not morality."
Vanessa flinched as if he had struck her.
I thought of Lily asking whether Ryan loved her.
I thought of how complicated love could be.
Then I looked at Charles and understood that some people used the word family only when it benefited them.
"Where is the agreement?"
I asked.
Charles nodded toward Vanessa's envelope.
"She has a copy."
Vanessa stared at him.
"You said it was the original."
"You should have checked."
Her face crumpled.
"Where is the original?"
"Safe."
"Where?"
"Not your concern."
I slipped the drive between my fingers.
"Then no trade."
Charles raised the gun.
"Claire."
I forced myself not to move.
"If you shoot me, the police get the drive anyway."
"Maybe."
"They already copied it."
"Not all of it."
"They found the encrypted partition."
That landed.
His eyes narrowed.
"Ryan."
"Yes."
Charles looked toward the dark windows.
For the first time, he seemed uncertain.
Vanessa saw it too.
"What is in the partition?"
Charles ignored her.
"What did Ryan tell them?"
"Everything."
"He does not know everything."
"Enough."
Vanessa stepped closer.
"What is in it?"
Charles snapped, "Be quiet."
"You told me it was just financial records."
He turned on her.
"And you believed me because believing me made you rich."
Vanessa's hands shook.
"I did everything you asked."
"Exactly."
"I moved Lily's trust."
"Yes."
"I got access to Graham."
"Yes."
"I almost married him."
"Almost being the important word."
She recoiled.
I realized this was more than a criminal partnership collapsing.
This was a daughter begging her father to admit she mattered.
He never would.
"Vanessa," I said.
She looked at me.
"Come here."
She laughed bitterly.
"To you?"
"Away from him."
"You think you are better than me."
"No."
"You always did."
"No. You always needed me to think I was less."
Her face tightened.
"Shut up."
"Because if I was less, then what you did to me felt justified."
"Shut up!"
Charles raised the gun higher.
"Both of you."
A faint sound echoed outside.
Sirens.
Distant but growing.
Charles glanced toward the windows.
That was the first mistake he made.
Vanessa moved.
She lunged for his gun arm.
Charles shouted.
The weapon fired.
The sound exploded inside the terminal.
I dropped to the floor.
Glass shattered behind me.
Vanessa screamed.
Charles struck her across the face and shoved her into a row of metal chairs.
I crawled toward the old ticket counter.
Another shot.
The wall beside me chipped.
"Claire!"
Vanessa yelled.
I looked back.
She had grabbed Charles around the waist.
He was trying to pull free.
"Run!"
For one insane second, I hesitated.
Then I ran.
Not toward the exit.
Toward the open locker.
I threw the decoy drive inside.
Charles saw me.
"No!"
He shoved Vanessa away and sprinted toward the locker.
That gave police the opening they needed.
The side doors burst open.
"Police! Drop the weapon!"
Charles froze.
Vanessa lay on the floor bleeding from her lip.
I pressed myself against the wall.
Officers surrounded Charles.
For a second, I thought he would surrender.
Then he raised the gun.
Three officers moved at once.
A stun device cracked.
Charles convulsed and fell.
The gun skidded across the floor.
Detective Cole reached me first.
"Are you hit?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
I looked down at myself.
No blood.
"Yes."
Then I saw Vanessa.
She was sitting against the chairs, staring at Charles as officers handcuffed him.
She looked smaller than I had ever seen her.
An officer approached her.
"Vanessa Whitmore, stand up."
She did not move.
"Ma'am, stand up."
She looked at me.
"Claire."
I said nothing.
"I saved you."
I stared at her.
"After you brought me here."
Her face twisted.
"I did not know he would pull a gun."
"You knew enough."
The officer helped her to her feet.
She looked at me as he placed handcuffs around her wrists.
"Tell them I helped."
There it was.
Even now.
A transaction.
"Tell them the truth," she begged.
I stepped closer.
"I will."
Hope flashed across her face.
Then I finished.
"All of it."
Her expression died.
Police led her away.
Charles was placed in another vehicle.
Detective Cole retrieved the envelope Vanessa had carried.
Inside was the copy of the partnership agreement.
No original.
I looked toward the black water beyond the terminal.
"Where is the original?"
Detective Cole shook her head.
"We will ask Charles."
"He will not tell you."
"Then we find it without him."
My phone rang.
It was the safe apartment.
I answered immediately.
"Lily?"
No one spoke.
"Hello?"
Then I heard Ryan.
His voice was panicked.
"Claire, Lily is gone."
May you like
The entire world stopped.
