Chapter 2: The Truth No One Could Deny

When we returned home later that evening, the house was dark.

Except the living room.

My mother and sister were still sitting exactly where I had left them.

Only now...

Suitcases sat beside the couch.

My mother looked furious.

"So you're really throwing your own family out?"

I nodded.

"You already threw yourselves out."

She laughed bitterly.

"One day she'll leave you."

"Then you'll come crawling back."

Emily lowered her eyes.

She hated conflict.

But before she could apologize—as she always did—I took her hand.

"No."

I looked at my mother without blinking.

"If anyone walks away from this marriage..."

"It won't be because of Emily."

My sister rolled her eyes.

"Seriously? You're acting like she's some kind of saint."

I quietly reached into my pocket.

Then I placed several printed screenshots onto the coffee table.

My sister's face immediately turned pale.

"What is that?"

"I installed security cameras before my trip."

"I forgot to mention them."

Neither woman moved.

"I watched every recording while we waited at the hospital."

Emily looked at me in complete surprise.

"You... watched them?"

I nodded.

"I saw everything."

The videos showed Emily carrying groceries alone while my mother watched television.

They showed my sister refusing to hold Leo because she "didn't want to catch germs."

They showed Emily cooking separate meals because my mother complained about every dish.

Most painfully...

One recording captured Emily quietly crying in the laundry room after everyone had gone to bed.

Alone.

The room fell silent.

For the first time all evening...

Neither my mother nor my sister had an excuse.

"I've already changed every door code," I said calmly.

"The locks will be replaced tomorrow morning."

My mother burst into tears.

"You'd really abandon me?"

I answered softly.

"No."

"You abandoned us."

An hour later...

They drove away.

The house became wonderfully quiet.

Not because someone had left.

But because peace had finally returned.
