Chapter 1: The Sentence That Changed Everything

The room was so quiet that I could hear the washing machine finish its cycle.

My mother stared at me as if she had never seen me before.

My sister slowly pulled one earbud from her ear.

I looked directly at both of them.

"If you came here expecting my wife to be your maid instead of your family," I said evenly, "you need to leave my house tonight."

My mother's smile disappeared.

"What did you just say?"

"You heard me."

She stood so quickly her teacup rattled against the coffee table.

"After everything I've done for you, you're choosing her over your own mother?"

I tightened my arm around Emily.

"There isn't a choice."

I looked down at my exhausted wife.

"She is my family."

Emily tried to pull away, embarrassed by the confrontation.

"I'm okay," she whispered.

"No," I answered gently. "You're not."

I turned back toward my mother.

"I've been gone for five days."

"You promised me she'd have help."

Instead, I came home to find my wife caring for a sick toddler, cooking dinner, washing clothes, unpacking groceries, and taking care of the house while the two of you watched videos."

My sister crossed her arms.

"We're guests."

"No," I replied.

"You invited yourselves here."

Silence.

Then my mother scoffed.

"Emily is a stay-at-home mom. This is literally her job."

Something inside me finally snapped.

"My wife is raising our son twenty-four hours a day."

"She isn't your servant."

"And she certainly isn't yours."

Leo whimpered against my shoulder, burning with fever.

That was enough.

I picked up my car keys.

"We're going to the hospital."

Emily immediately shook her head.

"No... Leo first. I'm fine."

I kissed the top of her head.

"I know."

Before leaving, I looked back one final time.

"When we get home tonight..."

"I expect both of you gone."

Neither of them believed I meant it.

They would soon discover I had never been more serious.

The emergency room confirmed Leo had a severe ear infection and dehydration.

The doctor reassured us that we had brought him in just in time.

Emily finally relaxed for the first time all day.

While Leo slept in her arms, she quietly admitted something that broke my heart.

"They weren't like this at first."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"They helped... for one day."

"Then your mom started saying I should 'learn to manage on my own.'"

Emily hesitated.

"I didn't tell you because I knew your trip was important."

"And I didn't want you worrying."

I closed my eyes.

She had protected my peace while carrying all the pain herself.

That realization hurt more than anything else.
