Chapter 17 - I Went Back for the Truth

I returned to Haven with Vanessa and Naomi on a bright morning in early winter.
Mia stayed at home with a trusted caregiver and a schedule we'd made together.
She knew exactly where I was going and when I would return.
The resort staff greeted me quietly.
No one mentioned the wedding until I asked.
The reception deck had been repaired where the emergency response had required access.
The lower terrace had been closed pending a safety review.
I walked toward the railing where Mia had fallen.
The ocean looked unchanged.
For a moment, I hated it for continuing to be beautiful.
Marcus stood a few feet behind me.
“We can redesign this section,” he said.
“We will.”
I rested my hands on the wood.
“But don't erase the records.”
“We won't.”
In the conference room, an independent auditor presented the results of the review.
The island trust had remained secure.
The supposed management transfer was invalid.
The attempted authorizations and disputed invoices had been referred for investigation.
There was no evidence that company money had actually been transferred into Robert's control.
I was relieved by the precision of that finding.
I didn't want a fairy-tale victory.
I wanted accurate records and defensible decisions.
Naomi showed me the vendor reconciliation.
All properly contracted staff had been paid.
Canceled services were handled according to their agreements.
Claims attributable to unauthorized requests were segregated for review.
I had not tried to bankrupt a florist or punish a server because my sister was cruel.
I had stopped one event from continuing as though a child hadn't been gravely endangered.
That distinction mattered to me.
Later, Greg asked for a private meeting with Vanessa present.
He told me he and Sarah had separated.
“I can't stay married to someone who did that,” he said.
I studied his face.
“You stayed silent when it happened.”
“I know.”
“Don't forget that part when you tell your story.”
He nodded.
“I won't.”
He placed a small package on the table.
It contained the wedding rings, returned through counsel, and a copy of Sarah's handwritten planning notebook.
One page contained guest lists and decoration sketches.
Another held a list of talking points for my parents.
KEEP ELENA OUT OF THE VIP PHOTOS.
TELL HER SHE'S LUCKY TO BE INCLUDED.
REMIND HER SARAH DESERVES THIS.
Beneath those lines was a name I recognized.
MIA.
Next to it, Sarah had written a note.
IF ELENA WON'T COOPERATE, USE THE GIRL TO GET HER ATTENTION.
The room became terribly quiet.
Vanessa photographed the page and arranged for proper transfer of the original.
I didn't know whether Sarah had ever intended physical harm.
But she had considered my daughter a tool before the wedding began.
I rose from the table.
There was nothing left for me to ask Greg.
May you like
And there would be no private bargain with Sarah.
