Chapter 12 - Sarah's Version of the Truth

Sarah's evidence arrived as a short, heavily edited video.

It began with Mia running across the terrace.

It showed the torn train and spilled wine.

Then it cut away before the shove.

A caption claimed Mia had lost her balance while Sarah tried to catch her.

The clip ended with me on the phone announcing Code Red.

To anyone who hadn't seen the original footage, it looked like a rich woman throwing a tantrum over a family accident.

By breakfast, the video was everywhere.

Sarah appeared in an interview wearing a white blouse and no makeup.

“I love my niece,” she said.

“I would never hurt her.”

When asked why she had not visited the hospital, she lowered her eyes.

“My sister cut off contact.”

My hands trembled so violently I nearly dropped the phone.

Vanessa told me not to respond in anger.

“We can release a precise statement without exposing Mia to the spectacle.”

Our statement confirmed that a child had been hospitalized after a fall, that authorities were investigating, and that we were cooperating fully.

We declined to comment on her medical details.

The statement did not satisfy the internet.

But I wasn't trying to satisfy the internet.

I was trying to keep my daughter from growing up in the middle of a public trial conducted by strangers.

At noon, Greg contacted the investigators with a recording from his personal phone.

He had unintentionally captured the first few seconds after Mia fell.

The recording showed Sarah turning away from the railing and saying, “She shouldn't have touched my dress.”

It was brief, ugly, and devastating.

Unlike Sarah's edited montage, it aligned with the fixed surveillance footage.

Then an events photographer stepped forward.

Her camera had been set to capture a wide sequence of candid moments during the reception.

The resulting images were timestamped.

They showed Sarah facing Mia, extending her arms, and looking over the railing afterward.

A separate frame captured my mother raising her hand toward me.

The photographer told investigators she'd been afraid to speak because Sarah's publicist controlled future assignments from several luxury clients.

I asked Vanessa to make sure the woman understood that no one from my company would retaliate for cooperating.

The professional courage of strangers left me feeling ashamed of how many years I'd excused the cowardice of relatives.

By evening, Sarah removed her video.

It was too late.

Screenshots and copies remained online.

Then she posted a new message.

My sister is trying to ruin my marriage because she has always been jealous of me.

I read it once.

Then I closed the application.

Mia had begun laughing at her movie again.

I chose that sound over Sarah's voice.

At ten that night, Vanessa called.

Authorities had requested an interview with Sarah.

Her attorney had responded that she would cooperate.

But Sarah had already purchased a plane ticket under her maiden name.

And the departure was scheduled for six the next morning.
