Chapter 5 - THE DEAD BROTHER

Alejandro stared at Elena for so long that the rain became the only sound in the room.
He wanted to tell her she was mistaken.
He wanted to blame exhaustion, medication, darkness, anything that could make the impossible ordinary again.
Instead, he asked the question he was afraid to hear answered.
"How close was he to you?"
Elena looked down at her hands.
"Close enough for me to see the scar beneath his left ear."
Alejandro's breath stopped.
Rafael had received that scar when he was twelve after falling through a greenhouse window.
Few people knew about it because his hair usually covered it.
Elena knew.
Alejandro knew.
And Rafael was supposed to be dead.
"What did he say?"
"He asked whether Vivian had received the final signature."
"Then he told her the board meeting couldn't be delayed again."
Alejandro stood.
The walls suddenly felt too close.
"What board meeting?"
Elena shook her head.
"I don't know."
"They stopped talking when they saw I was awake."
Alejandro crossed to the door and called Mateo inside.
"Get me Rafael's death file."
Mateo frowned.
"The aviation report?"
"Everything."
"Autopsy, dental identification, insurance, recovery records, all of it."
Mateo did not ask why.
He left immediately.
Elena watched Alejandro pace once across the carpet.
"You think he's alive."
"I don't know what I think."
"I saw him."
Alejandro stopped.
"I believe that you saw someone."
Her expression hardened.
"That's not the same thing."
The distance in her voice cut him.
He returned to the chair.
"You're right."
He made himself meet her eyes.
"I believe you."
Elena looked away.
"Vivian used to say those three words were expensive."
"She said people only believed what they could afford to accept."
Alejandro felt anger rise again, but this time he kept it contained.
"Then tonight we're going to become very expensive."
A faint smile touched Elena's mouth.
It disappeared quickly, but he saw it.
Forty minutes later, Mateo returned carrying a secured tablet.
Detective Sloan entered with him.
They had pulled Rafael's accident file from cloud storage and the family's legal archive.
The official story had always been simple.
Rafael had flown from Lisbon to Tangier on a chartered twin-engine aircraft.
The plane lost altitude in bad weather over the Atlantic.
Two bodies were recovered.
One was the pilot.
The other was identified as Rafael through dental records and a family signet ring.
Alejandro had flown to Portugal immediately.
He remembered the white room.
He remembered the sealed casket recommendation.
He remembered being told the remains were too badly damaged for viewing.
He remembered accepting the explanation because grief had already exhausted his ability to fight.
Mara scrolled through the report.
"Who confirmed the dental match?"
Mateo answered.
"Dr. Luis Ortega."
Mara's eyes narrowed.
"Is that name familiar?"
Alejandro nodded slowly.
"He used to be Vivian's dentist."
The room went silent.
Mateo scrolled farther.
"And the insurance beneficiary was a holding trust."
"Which trust?"
"Moretti Fiduciary Services."
Alejandro felt cold.
Vivian had told him the trust structure was standard because Rafael's estate planning had been unfinished.
At the time, Alejandro had signed papers to settle matters quickly.
Now every signature from that period felt contaminated.
Mara looked at Elena.
"Did Rafael ever explain why he was involved?"
"No."
"Did he threaten you?"
Elena hesitated.
"Not at first."
Alejandro's attention sharpened.
"At first?"
She nodded.
"The first time he came down, he apologized."
Alejandro looked at her.
"For what?"
"For not stopping Vivian sooner."
"He said things had gone too far."
"He said he would get me out."
Elena's fingers tightened around the blanket.
"Then Vivian came in."
"They argued."
"The next time he came down, he was different."
"He told me I had one job."
"Sign what they gave me and stop making everything harder."
Alejandro felt disbelief give way to something worse.
Betrayal was easier to understand than resurrection.
If Rafael had survived deliberately, then his death had not been an accident.
It had been a disappearance.
A disappearance planned while Elena was hidden under the same roof.
Mara examined the aviation file again.
"The crash investigator retired six weeks after the final report."
"He moved to Monaco."
Mateo looked at Alejandro.
"And his mortgage was paid off through a company called Ardent Maritime."
Alejandro knew the name.
Ardent Maritime had once belonged to Rafael.
He sat down slowly.
"He planned his death."
Mara did not contradict him.
"It appears possible."
A knock sounded at the door.
Dr. Reyes entered.
"Elena needs rest."
Elena shook her head.
"Not yet."
The doctor looked at her, then at Alejandro.
"Ten minutes."
When he left, Elena leaned forward.
"There's something in the laundry room."
Alejandro frowned.
"What?"
"A phone."
Mateo looked at her.
"Whose phone?"
"Mine."
Alejandro's heart lurched.
"You had a phone?"
"For eleven minutes."
She explained that two months earlier, a young kitchen assistant named Sofia had found an old smartphone in a discarded box.
Sofia had secretly given it to Elena after realizing she was not just another servant.
Elena had hidden the device behind a loose drain panel in the laundry room.
She had managed to record one conversation before Vivian discovered that someone had helped her.
"What happened to Sofia?"
Elena's face went still.
"Vivian said she quit."
Alejandro heard the lie immediately.
"Did she?"
Elena shook her head.
"I heard her screaming in the garage that night."
Mateo left at once with two officers.
Alejandro remained with Elena.
Five minutes later, his phone rang.
Mateo's voice was tight.
"We found the device."
"And something else."
Alejandro stood.
"What?"
"Blood behind the laundry drain panel."
Elena closed her eyes.
Alejandro looked toward the hallway.
"Is there enough for testing?"
"Yes."
"And the phone?"
"It still powers on."
Mateo paused.
"Sir, there's a recording on it."
"Play it."
Static filled the speaker.
Then Vivian's voice became clear.
"If Alejandro ever finds her, we lose the vote."
A man answered.
Alejandro recognized the voice before the first sentence ended.
It was Rafael.
"The recording did more than prove Rafael was alive.
It changed the emotional geometry of the room.
Until that moment, Alejandro had imagined his brother's involvement as something he could still explain away through coercion.
Maybe Rafael discovered the secret late.
Maybe he had been threatened.
Maybe he was trying to help Elena from inside the conspiracy.
But the voice on the phone sounded composed.
Strategic.
He discussed Alejandro's search the way an executive discussed a delayed shipment.
Elena watched Alejandro listening.
She recognized the temptation to search for a less painful interpretation.
"He knew," she said.
Alejandro closed his eyes.
"Yes."
"I need you not to make me prove that part over and over."
He opened them.
The request was larger than Rafael.
For years, Vivian had forced Elena to prove obvious realities.
That she was not unstable.
That she did not volunteer for confinement.
That forged signatures were forged.
That pain was pain even if paperwork called it treatment.
Alejandro nodded.
"You don't have to prove it to me."
Elena looked at him for several seconds.
Then she relaxed slightly.
Mateo examined the phone metadata.
"The recording was made sixty-three days ago."
Mara frowned.
"Can we tell whether it was edited?"
"Not yet."
"But the file was created on this device and never exported."
That strengthened authenticity.
Alejandro looked at the blood behind the laundry panel.
"Find Sofia."
Mateo nodded.
"Already running her records."
The household employment database listed Sofia Velez as having resigned voluntarily for family reasons.
There was a digital resignation letter.
Elena looked at it and shook her head.
"She didn't write that."
"How do you know?"
"She told me she was saving for nursing school."
"She said this job was awful, but she needed three more months to reach her tuition target."
Mara examined the resignation date.
It was the morning after the hidden phone recording.
The payroll account showed a final deposit larger than normal.
Two weeks of severance.
A clean administrative ending.
Exactly the kind of document that made people stop asking questions.
Alejandro looked at the account details.
The final payment was approved through Vivian's office.
"She erased people with paperwork."
Mara nodded.
"Paperwork is useful because it makes disappearance look voluntary."
Elena looked at the resignation letter.
"That's what they tried to do with me too."
Alejandro remembered the letters found in the basement claiming Elena feared him and left voluntarily.
The mechanism repeated.
Create a document.
Attach authority.
Let institutions finish the lie.
Mateo's search found no travel records for Sofia after her resignation.
No new employment.
No rental lease.
No tax activity.
Nothing.
Mara added Sofia to the missing-person investigation.
Alejandro felt another layer of urgency settle over him.
Finding Elena had not ended the nightmare.
It had opened the door to everyone harmed while he was chasing false leads.
Then Mateo played the recording one more time.
Rafael's final sentence filled the room again.
"Then make sure he finds a body before he finds Elena."
This time nobody searched for a kinder meaning.
