Chapter 15 - SOFIA

The name changed the entire investigation again.

Sofia Vale Castillo.

A daughter nobody in the recognized family knew existed.

Alejandro read the line repeatedly.

Hector Castillo had listed Sofia as a direct beneficiary of the foundation succession structure.

Her birth date meant she was younger than Alejandro and Rafael, but old enough to have been part of the family's hidden history long before Elena disappeared.

Mateo searched personnel records from the mansion.

The kitchen assistant who helped Elena had been hired under the name Sofia Velez.

Her identity documents appeared legitimate at first glance.

A deeper check revealed they had been issued only six months before she joined the household.

Her original birth record had been sealed.

The father line was blank.

The mother's name was Ana Vale.

Alejandro looked at the detained Dr. Stephen Vale's file.

Vale had a younger sister named Ana.

She died twenty years earlier.

The pieces connected in a way that made Alejandro's skin crawl.

"Vale knew who Sofia was."

Mara nodded.

"Most likely."

"And Isabella did too."

"If Sofia was another potential beneficiary, she was a threat."

Elena arrived at the monastery under escort after the site was secured.

She insisted on seeing the archive herself.

When Alejandro showed her the succession page, she sat down slowly.

"Sofia never told me."

"Maybe she didn't know."

Elena shook her head.

"She knew something."

"The night she gave me the phone, she said, 'Some families bury people without graves.'"

"I thought she meant me."

Alejandro looked at the ledgers around them.

"Maybe she meant herself."

Investigators searched the monastery for evidence of Sofia's whereabouts.

They found a personnel file hidden in Isabella's private cabinet.

The file contained surveillance photographs of Sofia from childhood through adulthood.

Schoolyards.

Bus stops.

College entrances.

A grocery store.

A nursing program graduation.

Isabella had watched her for years.

One note described Sofia as "unaware of paternal line."

Another, dated six months before Elena disappeared, read, "Contact established through S.V."

S.V. could only be Stephen Vale.

The doctor had recruited his own niece into Isabella's orbit.

Whether Sofia understood who she was working for remained unclear.

Then investigators found a later note written by Vivian.

"Sofia asking questions about lower corridor."

Another read, "Saw E."

A third was written in red ink.

"Remove after phone incident."

Elena stared at those words for a long time.

"She helped me because she saw me."

Alejandro looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"Everyone else had learned not to."

"They brought food."

"They changed sheets."

"They followed orders."

"But they looked through me because seeing me meant knowing what was happening."

Elena touched the edge of Sofia's file.

"Sofia looked at me like I was still a person."

Alejandro felt the sentence settle over the room.

A search began across every property tied to Isabella's network.

Hours later, an agent found Sofia's name in medical transport records from a private facility in Nevada.

She had been admitted under a false identity nine weeks earlier.

The facility specialized in long-term psychiatric care.

The admission form claimed severe delusions, identity confusion, and dangerous fixation on wealthy families.

Dr. Stephen Vale had signed the referral.

The pattern was identical to Elena.

Discredit the woman.

Create medical paperwork.

Control access.

Make truth look like illness.

Federal agents raided the facility before midnight.

Sofia was alive.

When the call came, Elena sat down and cried silently.

Not because she knew Sofia well.

Because one person who had tried to open a door had survived the cost.

Sofia was transported under protection to a hospital near the city.

She had been heavily medicated but was physically stable.

When she became alert enough to speak, she asked only one question.

"Did Elena get out?"

Mara told her yes.

Sofia closed her eyes and began to cry.

Alejandro and Elena were allowed to speak with her the next afternoon.

Sofia looked younger than twenty-four in the hospital bed.

Her dark hair had been cut short.

A bruise yellowed along her jaw.

She stared at Alejandro for several seconds.

"You look like him."

Alejandro knew she meant Hector.

"Did you know?"

Sofia shook her head.

"Not until I worked at the mansion."

She explained that Stephen Vale had approached her after nursing school.

He claimed to be a distant uncle who wanted to help her find work.

He arranged the kitchen position through a staffing agency.

At first, Sofia believed it was ordinary employment.

Then she began noticing things.

Food trays prepared without names.

Medical supplies sent downstairs.

Servants who became nervous near the east wing.

One night, she followed Vivian through the hidden panel.

She saw Elena.

"I recognized you from the portrait," Sofia whispered.

Elena reached toward her, then stopped.

Sofia noticed and extended her own hand.

Elena took it.

"Why didn't you call the police?" Alejandro asked gently.

Sofia looked at him.

"I did."

Mara leaned forward.

"When?"

"The next morning."

"I called the number on the old missing-person poster."

"A man answered."

"He asked my name."

"He told me to wait somewhere safe."

"That night, Captain Mercer came to the mansion."

Mara's face tightened.

The hotline had routed directly to Mercer's unit.

Sofia realized immediately that the police contact had betrayed her.

After that, she stopped trusting official channels.

She found the old phone and gave it to Elena instead.

"I thought if Elena recorded them, somebody would believe her."

Elena squeezed Sofia's hand.

"You saved me."

Sofia shook her head.

"No."

"I failed."

"They found the phone."

"They took me."

"You stayed there."

Elena leaned closer.

"You opened a door."

"You don't get to decide that it meant nothing because you couldn't finish everything yourself."

Sofia began crying harder.

Alejandro looked away to give them privacy.

After several minutes, Sofia asked for water.

Then she told them something else.

Before she was taken, she had stolen a ledger from Vivian's office.

She hid it outside the mansion.

"Where?" Mara asked.

Sofia smiled weakly.

"Somewhere a Castillo would never look."

Alejandro almost laughed.

"That leaves a lot of places."

Sofia looked at him.

"A public library."

She had hidden the ledger behind a damaged wall panel in a neighborhood branch library where she volunteered as a teenager.

Federal agents recovered it that evening.

The ledger contained payments not found in Isabella's monastery archive.

These were more recent.

One line showed monthly transfers to Captain Mercer.

Another showed payments to Dr. Vale.

Another listed Vivian's discretionary accounts.

Then Mara reached the final page.

One payment had been made only six days earlier.

The recipient was listed by initials.

R.C.

Amount: five million dollars.

Alejandro felt the room tighten.

Rafael Castillo.

The note beside the transfer read:

The notation looked clinical on the page.

That made it worse.

Five million dollars.

Final delivery.

E.C.

A person converted into a transaction line.

Elena stared at it until the letters stopped looking like her initials and started looking like evidence.

"This is what they always did," she said.

"They changed words until the act sounded administrative."

Mara looked at her.

"Treatment instead of confinement."

"Transfer instead of abduction."

"Instability instead of resistance."

Elena nodded.

"Delivery instead of whatever they planned to do to me."

Alejandro remembered how often corporate life relied on softened language.

Restructuring instead of layoffs.

Exposure instead of harm.

Compliance issue instead of coercion.

He had never considered how language could create emotional distance from responsibility.

Vivian had weaponized that habit completely.

The financial team traced the five-million payment backward.

It did not originate from Isabella personally.

It came from Meridian Beneficial Trust.

That tied the corporate takeover directly to Elena's planned removal.

The board fight was not a separate scheme.

It was the visible end of the same operation.

Mara circled the transaction.

"If we can prove beneficial ownership, this helps conspiracy charges."

Elena looked at the page.

"And if Rafael planned to betray them?"

"Still evidence."

"Taking money for a kidnapping you later modify does not erase the agreement."

Elena nodded.

She did not want Rafael rescued by a late change of heart.

Alejandro did not either.

But both needed to know what he intended.

Intent would not erase years of complicity.

It might explain the sudden breadcrumbs.

The mill.

The vault call.

The warnings.

Rafael had begun moving against Isabella only after the plan entered its final stage.

Why then?

What changed?

The five-million payment might be payment for a job.

It might also mark the moment Rafael decided he could no longer pretend the job would remain theoretical.

Elena looked at Mara.

"Find the transport reservation."

Mara frowned.

"Why?"

"Because delivery has a destination."

That simple observation opened the next trail.

FINAL DELIVERY ON E.C.

Elena stared at the line.

"Final delivery of what?"

Mara looked at Alejandro.

May you like

"Or final delivery of whom?"
