Chapter 19 - THE COMPASS

The first bullet struck the container above Caitlyn's head.

The second shattered the overhead light.

Darkness swallowed Yard Seven.

Caitlyn crawled behind the open container door.

Someone shouted.

Vincent cursed.

Metal rang under gunfire.

Then Damian's voice cut through everything.

"Caitlyn."

"Here."

"Stay down."

"Working on it."

A body hit the pavement nearby.

Caitlyn flattened herself against the wet concrete.

The yard lights farther away created long strips of shadow between containers.

She could see Eleanor struggling with Vincent.

Mercer had disappeared.

The flash drive still lay in the open.

Caitlyn's stomach tightened.

She crawled toward it.

A hand grabbed her ankle.

She kicked hard.

A man cursed.

Caitlyn twisted and saw one of Mercer's guards.

He pulled her backward.

She grabbed the wheel chock and swung it.

Metal struck his wrist.

His grip released.

Caitlyn scrambled away.

She heard Damian before she saw him.

One brutal impact.

Then another.

The guard fell.

Damian pulled Caitlyn behind the container.

"Are you hit?"

"No."

"Sure?"

"Yes."

His hands moved over her shoulders without touching until she nodded again.

"Vincent?"

"Alive."

"Eleanor?"

"Running."

"Mercer?"

Damian looked toward the river.

"Also running."

Caitlyn saw the flash drive.

"There."

Damian reached for it.

A shot struck the pavement beside his hand.

He pulled back.

Mercer's voice came from the darkness.

"Leave it."

Caitlyn looked around.

The sound came from above.

A metal stairway climbed the side of a loading crane.

Mercer stood halfway up.

His gun pointed down at them.

In his other hand was a small black device.

A trigger.

Damian saw it.

"What did you wire?"

Mercer smiled.

"Your pier."

Caitlyn's blood went cold.

"How much?"

"Enough."

Damian stepped into view.

"You destroy Pier Nine, you destroy the ledger with it."

"Not if you bring it to me."

"Then what?"

"I leave."

"And everyone on that list belongs to you again."

"They always did."

Caitlyn looked at the emergency lights.

Red indicators blinked along the container rows.

Pier Nine's power and fire-control systems had been repaired after the earlier blasts.

Mercer had planted new charges quickly.

That meant he had prepared them before tonight.

The trigger might not control every charge directly.

It might activate a wired ignition circuit through the pier's old infrastructure.

Caitlyn remembered something from Chicago.

Architectural drawings.

The meeting on the jet.

Vincent and two senior men had spread plans across the main table.

Plans for Pier Nine renovations.

She had typed notes while exhausted.

Section four.

Paragraph B.

Contractors absorb penalties resulting from employee misconduct.

She remembered another detail.

The old electrical grid at Pier Nine had a manual emergency cutoff in the harbor operations room.

The renovation contractor had complained about it.

Damian had refused to remove it until the new system passed inspection.

Caitlyn touched his sleeve.

He looked at her.

She whispered.

"Emergency cutoff."

His eyes sharpened.

He remembered too.

"Operations room," she whispered.

"Two rows east."

Damian shook his head once.

Too dangerous.

Caitlyn ignored him.

Mercer shouted from the stairs.

"The drive."

Damian stepped farther into the open.

"You want the ledger?"

"Come get it."

He was buying Caitlyn time.

She moved behind the containers.

One row.

Then two.

The operations room stood behind a steel door.

Locked.

Caitlyn almost laughed.

Of course.

She tried her old Hamilton access code.

Rejected.

Damian had surrendered executive access.

Her own badge had been restored, but she did not have it.

She searched the keypad.

A manual key cylinder sat beneath it.

No key.

Gunfire sounded behind her.

Caitlyn looked around desperately.

A red emergency box hung on the wall.

BREAK GLASS FOR ACCESS.

She grabbed a fire extinguisher and smashed it.

Inside was a mechanical override key.

She unlocked the door.

The operations room smelled like dust and hot wiring.

Panels covered the wall.

Caitlyn searched labels.

BERTH POWER.

FIRE SUPPRESSION.

AUXILIARY GRID.

Then she found it.

PIER-WIDE EMERGENCY DISCONNECT.

A heavy red lever sat behind a plastic shield.

Caitlyn lifted the cover.

Her phone rang.

Mercer.

She stared at the screen.

Then answered.

"Where are you?"

His voice was calm again.

Too calm.

Caitlyn looked at the lever.

"Looking for north."

Mercer went silent.

"What?"

"My father liked that phrase."

She heard his breathing change.

"Thomas is dead."

"Yes."

"But he was smarter than you."

Mercer's voice hardened.

"Caitlyn."

"He copied the ledger."

"You knew that."

"What you did not know is we copied it again."

Silence.

Caitlyn smiled without humor.

"You don't need the drive anymore."

"Everyone who matters already has it."

Mercer swore.

"You're lying."

"Ask the federal prosecutor who questioned Damian."

"Ask the board."

"Ask the police."

She did not know whether every one of those statements was technically true yet.

They were true enough.

Mercer's breathing became rough.

"You think this ends with evidence?"

"No."

Caitlyn placed her hand on the emergency lever.

"I think it ends with you discovering leverage only works while you are the only person holding it."

She pulled.

The pier went black.

Every light died.

The hum of electrical equipment stopped.

For half a second, there was perfect silence.

Then Mercer's trigger failed to do anything.

He screamed a curse.

Caitlyn ran.

Backup battery lights came on thirty seconds later.

By then, Damian had reached the crane stairway.

Mercer fired down at him.

Damian moved behind the steel support.

Vincent appeared from the opposite lane.

Blood darkened his shoulder.

"Boss."

Damian looked at him.

Vincent pointed upward.

"I'll go left."

"You're hit."

"So are my feelings."

Even now.

Damian almost laughed.

Caitlyn reached the base of the crane.

"Damian."

He saw her.

His face changed from focus to fury.

"Why are you here?"

"Because the power is off."

"That was you?"

"You're welcome."

Mercer shouted from above.

"Touch the drive and I shoot her."

Caitlyn looked up.

His gun had shifted toward her.

Again.

Always her because he had learned what she meant to Damian.

Damian stepped away from the drive.

"Fine."

Mercer began descending slowly.

"Hands where I can see them."

Damian obeyed.

Vincent stayed hidden.

Caitlyn's pulse hammered.

Mercer reached the pavement.

He moved toward the flash drive.

His gun remained aimed at Caitlyn.

"Pick it up," he told Damian.

Damian did.

"Bring it here."

Damian walked toward him.

Caitlyn watched Mercer's stance.

Gun in right hand.

Trigger in left.

Attention divided between Damian and her.

Vincent somewhere behind the containers.

Eleanor missing.

Then Caitlyn saw movement behind Mercer.

Eleanor stepped from the shadows.

Her gun pointed at his back.

"Enough."

Mercer froze.

Caitlyn stared.

Eleanor's face looked exhausted.

"Put it down, Elias."

Mercer laughed softly.

"You found a conscience?"

"No."

Her hand trembled.

"I found survival."

"Same as always."

"You were going to leave me."

"Of course."

Mercer smiled.

"You were useful until you weren't."

Eleanor's face broke.

Years of fear, greed, and humiliation seemed to surface at once.

"I gave you everything."

"You gave me what I bought."

Eleanor's finger tightened on the trigger.

Damian's voice cut through.

"Don't."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because if you shoot him, you become the only murderer standing in the light."

Mercer used the distraction.

He spun and fired.

Eleanor fell.

Caitlyn screamed.

Damian lunged.

The two men crashed into the side of the container.

The gun skidded away.

Mercer struck Damian across the face with the trigger device.

Damian drove him backward.

Mercer pulled a knife.

Caitlyn's heart stopped.

Vincent appeared.

"Drop it."

Mercer turned.

Damian grabbed his wrist.

The knife fell.

Then Damian hit him.

Once.

Twice.

Mercer dropped to one knee.

Damian hit him again.

Caitlyn saw his face.

The control was gone.

Years of his father's secrets.

Her parents.

Noah.

Vincent.

Every trap.

Every lie.

Mercer fell onto his back.

Damian stood over him.

His hand reached for the dropped gun.

Caitlyn knew what would happen next.

"Damian."

He did not stop.

She stepped closer.

"Damian."

His fingers closed around the weapon.

Mercer smiled through blood.

"Do it."

Caitlyn's stomach turned.

Mercer wanted this.

One final act that proved every story he had told about Damian.

Caitlyn stepped between them.

Damian's eyes snapped to her.

"Move."

"No."

"Caitlyn."

"He killed my parents."

Her voice shook.

"He took Noah."

"He framed me."

"He destroyed people for years."

Tears filled her eyes.

"And I want him alive."

Damian stared.

"Why?"

"Because dead men do not answer questions."

She looked down at Mercer.

"Dead men do not sit in court while every person they thought they owned watches them lose everything."

Mercer's smile faded.

Caitlyn looked back at Damian.

"You told me ruin is survivable."

His own words returned to him.

"Make him survive it."

Damian's breathing slowed.

The gun lowered.

Mercer saw it.

For the first time, he looked frightened.

Sirens approached from every direction.

Vincent leaned against a container, one hand over his bleeding shoulder.

"Federal agents."

Damian looked at him.

"You called them?"

"Caitlyn did."

Caitlyn blinked.

Vincent smiled weakly.

"Automatic release condition."

"Remember?"

Damian looked at her.

She lifted one shoulder.

"Scheduling."

He laughed.

It was short.

Rough.

But real.

Federal agents flooded the yard.

Police followed.

Mercer was handcuffed on the pavement beside Container 719.

Eleanor was alive.

The bullet had struck below her collarbone.

Paramedics stabilized her while she whispered one sentence to the lead agent.

"I'll testify."

Malcolm arrived with investigators minutes later and identified Mercer as the man behind the 2019 Northstar network.

Rowan's statement corroborated the kidnapping.

Graham Bell's statement corroborated the data theft.

The ledger corroborated nearly everything else.

Caitlyn stood at the edge of the pier and watched Mercer being placed into an armored federal vehicle.

Damian came to stand beside her.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Caitlyn looked at his split lip.

"You're hurt."

"A little."

She blinked.

"You admitted it."

"I'm trying new things."

"Dangerous habit."

His eyes moved to her.

"You stepped between me and a gun."

"Technically, you were holding the gun."

"That does not improve the sentence."

Caitlyn looked toward the river.

"Would you have done it?"

Damian did not pretend not to understand.

"Yes."

Her chest tightened.

"Before you spoke."

"And after?"

He looked at Mercer disappearing behind steel doors.

"After, I wanted him alive."

"Because I asked?"

Damian considered the question.

"Because you reminded me there was a better way to destroy him."

Caitlyn nodded.

That answer felt more honest than romance would have.

Damian looked at the dark pier.

"Your father was right."

"About what?"

"Find north."

He turned toward her.

May you like

"You did."
