Chapter 10 - THE KEY HE NEVER KNEW HE HAD

Damian did not move.

"No."

Mercer tilted his head.

"That was quick."

"You asked for Robert Hamilton's son."

"And now I am asking for Thomas Elmore's daughter."

"You get neither."

Mercer smiled.

"You are standing in my building."

"That does not make me yours."

"Your father sounded like that."

Something cold entered Damian's eyes.

Mercer noticed and seemed pleased.

"You never understood Robert."

"You didn't know him as well as you think."

"I knew what frightened him."

"His sons?"

"His legacy."

Mercer began walking in a slow circle around Damian.

"Robert could tolerate blood."

"He could tolerate scandal."

"He could even tolerate betrayal."

Mercer stopped.

"What he could not tolerate was the idea that one day you would learn how much of your empire was built by men you would despise."

Damian's voice stayed flat.

"You kidnapped Noah to discuss my childhood disappointment?"

Mercer's smile thinned.

"I kidnapped Noah because he saw something in 2019."

Caitlyn leaned toward the monitor.

Damian asked the question she could not.

"What did he see?"

"Me."

The word fell cleanly.

Caitlyn stopped breathing.

Mercer continued.

"Peter Vane drove the sedan."

"I sat beside him."

"Malcolm was in the Elmore vehicle because Robert finally convinced him to testify against me."

Damian's expression changed by a fraction.

"Malcolm was working with Thomas."

"For exactly six days."

Mercer laughed softly.

"Your uncle discovered morality late in life."

"And you tried to kill him."

"I tried to stop a car."

Mercer's tone became almost bored.

"The weather did the rest."

Caitlyn's nails cut into her palms.

Her parents had died because a man in a room with Damian was describing murder as logistics.

Vincent touched her arm.

"Stay here."

She realized she had started to stand.

Caitlyn sat again.

Inside the annex, Damian remained motionless.

"Why leave Noah alive?"

Mercer's eyes shifted toward the live screen.

"Because I thought his brain injury erased the problem."

"Then six months ago, someone sent me a video from Silver Pines."

Caitlyn felt sick.

"What video?" Damian asked.

"Noah responding to photographs."

Mercer smiled.

"He reacted to mine."

"So you came back."

"I came back because unfinished work offends me."

Damian's voice became quieter.

"You are going to regret that sentence."

Mercer laughed.

Then his face hardened.

"Bring me Caitlyn."

"No."

"She has half the key."

"She doesn't know what you're talking about."

"Of course she doesn't."

Mercer lifted one shoulder.

"Thomas was careful."

"Your father was paranoid."

"Together, they created a cipher that requires two phrases."

Damian's eyes narrowed.

"What phrase do I have?"

"You tell me."

Mercer smiled again.

"Robert gave it to you long before he died."

In the command van, Caitlyn whispered.

"Find north."

Vincent looked at her.

"What?"

"My father gave me a phrase."

She pointed toward the flash drive in her bag.

"Find north opened the first layer."

"Maybe that's your half."

"Then Damian's half is something his father used to say."

Vincent pressed a button.

"Boss, we may have Caitlyn's phrase."

Mercer looked toward Damian's hidden microphone.

"You brought company."

Damian did not react.

Vincent swore.

"He has a scanner."

Mercer raised one hand.

A sharp electronic tone filled the annex.

Damian's audio crackled.

Then went dead.

The body-camera feed froze.

Caitlyn's heart lurched.

"What happened?"

"Jammer."

Vincent began switching channels.

"We lost him."

"Go in."

"Not yet."

"Vincent."

"Damian gave me an order."

"I don't care."

"I do."

He looked at her.

"Because if we rush the building, Mercer moves Noah or kills him."

Caitlyn's breath came too quickly.

"Then what do we do?"

"We trust Damian for sixty seconds."

"That is a very long time."

"I know."

They watched a dead screen.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

Thirty-five.

At forty-two, one of the drones detected movement on the annex roof.

Vincent zoomed in.

A side door opened below.

Damian emerged.

Alone.

Caitlyn exhaled so hard her chest hurt.

Then she saw smoke behind him.

"Fire."

Vincent swore.

Flames appeared through a ground-floor window.

Damian ran across the street as the annex windows blew outward.

The blast shook the command van.

Caitlyn screamed his name.

Damian disappeared behind a parked truck.

Vincent was already outside.

Caitlyn followed before anyone could stop her.

Smoke rolled down the street.

Car alarms screamed.

Damian emerged through the haze with blood on his temple.

Caitlyn ran to him.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"You are bleeding."

"Still no."

"That is not how blood works."

He grabbed her shoulders.

"Why are you outside the van?"

"Why were you inside an exploding building?"

They stared at each other.

Vincent arrived.

"Could we postpone the domestic argument until we are not standing beside a burning courthouse?"

Caitlyn's face heated.

"This is not domestic."

Damian looked at Vincent.

"Find Mercer."

"Working on it."

Emergency sirens approached.

They moved quickly into the van.

Once inside, Caitlyn handed Damian a towel for his temple.

He ignored it.

She pressed it into his hand.

"Use it."

He did.

That tiny victory felt irrationally satisfying.

"What happened after the jammer?" Vincent asked.

Damian wiped the blood.

"Mercer offered the trade again."

"And?"

"I said no again."

Caitlyn folded her arms.

"He seems slow."

Damian's eyes flicked toward her.

"Then he told me why he needs the ledger."

Vincent stopped typing.

"Why?"

"It does not just document the old Northstar network."

Damian's jaw tightened.

"It documents politicians, judges, port officials, and business owners Mercer has been blackmailing for years."

Caitlyn stared.

"So the ledger is leverage."

"A map of leverage."

Vincent understood.

"Whoever owns it controls everyone on it."

"Or destroys them."

Caitlyn looked at her bag.

"My father copied it."

"Yes."

"And your father encrypted it."

Damian nodded.

"Apparently."

"Why would they divide the key between us?"

"Because neither of us was involved."

His voice softened slightly.

"We were insurance."

Caitlyn thought of her father's note.

Find north.

Take care of Noah.

He notices more than people think.

"What did your father give you?"

Damian leaned back.

"I don't know."

"Think."

"I am."

"A phrase."

"My father gave me a great many phrases, most of them unpleasant."

Vincent almost smiled.

Caitlyn watched Damian.

"Something he repeated."

Damian's expression changed slightly.

"There was one."

"What?"

He hesitated.

That alone told Caitlyn it mattered.

"When I was young, he used to take me sailing."

Vincent looked surprised.

Caitlyn was too.

Damian continued.

"I hated it."

"Of course you did."

"The ocean refuses schedules."

"A personal insult."

His mouth almost moved.

"Whenever fog came in, I would ask how he knew where to steer."

Caitlyn waited.

Damian looked at the flash drive.

"He always said the same thing."

"What?"

"Trust the compass, not the horizon."

Caitlyn felt a chill.

Find north.

Trust the compass, not the horizon.

Two halves of the same idea.

Vincent connected the isolated laptop in the van.

Caitlyn inserted the drive.

The first layer opened with FINDNORTH.

They searched hidden files.

One encrypted container remained.

A second password field appeared.

Damian typed TRUSTTHECOMPASSNOTTHEHORIZON.

The screen paused.

Then opened.

Hundreds of records appeared.

Payment ledgers.

Audio files.

Photographs.

Names.

Caitlyn stared.

Vincent whispered.

"This could burn half the East Coast."

Damian scrolled.

One folder was labeled MERCER.

Another MALCOLM.

A third ROBERT.

Caitlyn opened MERCER.

The first file contained surveillance images from 2019.

Peter Vane's black sedan.

Elias Mercer in the passenger seat.

The Elmore car ahead.

The second file contained a recorded call.

Mercer's voice ordered Northstar Truck Three to change routes.

The timestamp was twenty-seven minutes before the crash.

Caitlyn's hands shook.

"That's him."

Damian said nothing.

"He killed them."

Her voice broke.

"He actually killed them."

Damian's hand moved toward hers.

Then stopped.

Caitlyn saw the hesitation.

This time she closed the distance herself.

She placed her hand over his.

Damian went very still.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Vincent deliberately turned toward another monitor.

Caitlyn squeezed Damian's hand once.

Then released it.

"We have proof."

Damian nodded.

"Yes."

"Then we can trade a copy for Noah."

"No."

Her anger returned immediately.

"Why not?"

"Because Mercer does not want evidence."

Damian looked at the screen.

"He wants control of everyone named in it."

"I don't care."

"I know."

"Noah is worth more to me than every corrupt person in that file."

"I know."

"Then give it to him."

Damian met her eyes.

"If I give Mercer the ledger, Noah remains leverage forever."

Caitlyn froze.

"He will not release the only person who can prove he was at the crash."

The truth was unbearable.

Vincent looked at the screen.

"We need Noah before Mercer knows we opened the ledger."

Damian nodded.

"Exactly."

Caitlyn forced herself to think.

"The hospital room."

"What about it?"

"Mercer moved him through at least two locations."

She pulled up the live photograph.

"But every location has medical equipment."

Vincent leaned closer.

"He needs Noah stable."

"Which means he has someone medically trained."

Damian's eyes sharpened.

"Silver Pines staff."

Caitlyn nodded.

"Or someone who used to work there."

They requested personnel records.

One name stood out.

Dr. Kenneth Rowe did not exist.

But a physical therapist named Kenneth Rowan had worked at Silver Pines until six months earlier.

Termination reason: unauthorized recording of patient sessions.

Caitlyn's stomach dropped.

"The video Mercer saw."

Vincent searched Rowan's address.

Empty apartment.

Phone off.

Car registered to a storage company in Brooklyn.

The company owned three warehouse units.

Damian stood.

"Now we have somewhere to look."

Caitlyn looked at him.

"I'm coming."

Damian opened his mouth.

She lifted one finger.

"Do not say no before hearing the argument."

He actually paused.

"Rowan knows me."

"He worked at Silver Pines."

"He treated Noah twice."

Caitlyn's voice hardened.

"If he sees me, he may hesitate."

Damian's face became cold.

"Or he may shoot you first."

"You really know how to improve a plan."

Vincent spoke without looking up.

"We can use her voice without putting her inside."

Caitlyn looked at him.

"How?"

"Call him."

Vincent found Rowan's private number through archived HR records.

Caitlyn dialed from a masked line.

He answered on the third ring.

"Hello?"

Caitlyn recognized his voice.

"Kenneth."

Silence.

Then breathing.

"Ms. Elmore?"

"Where is Noah?"

The line went dead.

Vincent looked at the trace.

"Got him."

Damian leaned over.

The phone had connected through a tower in Brooklyn.

Less than half a mile from one of Rowan's storage properties.

Caitlyn's heart started pounding.

Damian looked at her.

"This time, you stay in the vehicle."

She nodded.

He narrowed his eyes.

"That agreement was suspiciously easy."

"I'm learning."

"I don't believe you."

"That sounds like a personal problem."

Despite everything, the corner of his mouth moved.

Then Vincent's screen flashed.

A breaking-news alert filled the monitor.

HAMILTON HOLDINGS EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT SUSPECTED IN MAJOR CORPORATE DATA THEFT.

Caitlyn stared at her own photograph beneath the headline.

The article included details only six people knew.

The $250,000 deposit.

Her suspended badge.

The forged contract.

And one new claim.

Sources said Damian Hamilton personally believed Caitlyn had betrayed him.

Caitlyn looked at Damian.

He looked furious.

Not because of the article.

May you like

Because someone inside the company was still leaking information in real time.
