Chapter 11 - OLIVIA'S RECORDING

Ryan did not take Olivia's phone immediately.
He stared at his sister standing beneath the entry lights with mascara streaked beneath her eyes and a forged transfer authorization in her hand.
For most of their childhood, Olivia had been the one who avoided conflict.
Ryan fought Margaret when he could.
Olivia learned to survive her by disappearing inside agreement.
She chose the dress Margaret wanted.
She dated the men Margaret approved.
She joined the charity boards Margaret selected.
She even bought a condominium five minutes from Margaret's house because their mother called anything farther away abandonment.
Ryan had always told himself Olivia was happy with that life.
Now he wondered whether she had simply become better at hiding fear.
"Come inside," he said.
Olivia followed him into the living room.
Naomi asked for the phone before anyone played the recording.
"I want a forensic copy made first."
Olivia nodded.
"I did not edit anything."
"I believe you."
Naomi looked at Ryan.
"But we are past the point where belief is enough."
Marcus connected the phone to an evidence-preservation system used by Ryan's security company.
He created a hash copy, documented the time, and returned the device.
Olivia pressed play.
Margaret's voice filled the room.
"Put it behind the tax files in Ryan's lower cabinet."
Olivia's recorded voice sounded smaller.
"Why me?"
"Because security will not question you."
"What is it?"
"Something the investigators need to find."
"Is it real?"
A pause followed.
Margaret answered coldly.
"Do not ask questions that make you responsible for the answers."
Ryan closed his eyes.
Emily looked at Olivia.
Olivia was shaking.
The recording continued.
"Mom, if Ryan did not sign it, this could send him to prison."
"Ryan made his choice."
"He is your son."
"And he humiliated me for that woman."
Emily's face tightened.
Margaret's voice became sharper.
"He stood in front of strangers and chose Emily over his own family."
Olivia whispered on the recording.
"Emily is his family."
There was a sound like a glass being set down too hard.
"Do not repeat that in my house."
Ryan opened his eyes.
The recording continued for seven more minutes.
Margaret never explicitly admitted planting the first folder.
But she instructed Olivia to plant another document and described exactly where it should be found.
That was enough to change the entire situation.
Naomi immediately called Agent Dana Ruiz.
Dana arrived forty minutes later with another agent.
Olivia gave a formal statement.
She surrendered the forged authorization in the sealed envelope.
Dana asked where Margaret obtained it.
Olivia shook her head.
"Peter brought a folder to her house."
"When?"
"Around six."
"Was Nathan there?"
Olivia hesitated.
"No."
"Did anyone mention him?"
"Yes."
Dana waited.
Olivia looked at Ryan.
"Mom said Nathan had become a liability."
Ryan's face went hard.
"Exact words?"
"She said, 'Peter will handle Nathan before he can hurt us again.'"
Naomi exchanged a glance with Dana.
Dana asked, "Did you understand what 'handle' meant?"
"No."
"Did you ask?"
"Peter told me to stay out of adult matters."
Ryan gave a bitter laugh.
"You are thirty-four."
Olivia's face crumpled.
"To Mom, we are children whenever she wants obedience."
The words silenced him.
Dana asked Olivia to provide Margaret's current address and Peter's contact information.
She also asked for permission to download any relevant messages from Olivia's phone.
Olivia agreed.
At 2:10 a.m., the agents left.
Ryan walked Olivia to a guest bedroom.
She stopped in the hallway.
"Do you hate me?"
Ryan looked at her.
"Did you help her before tonight?"
Olivia began crying again.
"Yes."
Ryan felt the answer like a weight.
"With what?"
"I gave her copies of your calendar."
"Why?"
"She said she was worried Emily was isolating you."
"What else?"
Olivia looked at the floor.
"I told her when you and Emily met Eleanor before her last birthday."
Emily, standing several feet away, went still.
Ryan stared at his sister.
"Mom did not know about that dinner until you told her?"
Olivia shook her head.
"No."
Ryan remembered the dinner.
Eleanor had seemed anxious.
She kept looking toward the restaurant entrance.
The next morning, Margaret called Ryan and angrily demanded to know what Eleanor had discussed.
Ryan had assumed Eleanor told her.
Now he knew Olivia had.
"What else?"
Olivia wiped her face.
"I gave Peter a copy of Grandma's old signature book."
The hallway became silent.
Naomi stepped closer.
"What signature book?"
"Grandma kept sample signatures for charitable checks in her home office."
Ryan's stomach dropped.
"When?"
"Two months before she died."
"Why did Peter want it?"
"Mom said they needed to update the estate plan."
Ryan turned away.
Emily watched him grip the stair railing.
The forged will now had a direct path to Eleanor's signature samples.
Olivia whispered, "I did not know."
Ryan turned back.
"You did not want to know."
Olivia flinched.
He regretted the cruelty immediately, but not the truth.
"I am sorry," she said.
"I know."
"I will testify."
"You may have to."
"I will."
Ryan nodded.
"Get some sleep."
He returned to the study with Emily and Naomi.
Naomi sat at the desk.
"Olivia's recording is strong evidence of attempted obstruction."
Ryan looked exhausted.
"Strong enough to arrest my mother?"
"That is Dana's decision."
"What about the folder they already found?"
"If the forensic evidence connects Margaret or Peter to it, the case against you weakens dramatically."
Emily looked at the empty space beneath the desk where the listening device had been.
"What about the bug?"
Naomi nodded.
"That may matter even more."
Marcus entered with another report.
"I pulled access logs for the house."
Ryan looked at him.
"And?"
"The day the transmitter was likely installed, Nathan entered the property at 3:12 p.m."
Ryan closed his eyes.
"Of course he did."
Marcus continued.
"But he was not alone."
Ryan looked up.
"Who?"
"Peter Caldwell's vehicle entered behind him."
Naomi's eyebrows rose.
"How long were they here?"
"Forty-eight minutes."
"Was Ryan home?"
"No."
Emily checked the date.
"I was in San Diego for a conference."
Ryan looked at Marcus.
"Why were they allowed in?"
"Nathan used his permanent access code."
Ryan felt betrayal all over again.
Marcus put another page down.
"There is something else."
A camera in the service corridor had recorded Nathan leaving with Peter.
Nathan looked nervous.
Peter looked calm.
In Peter's hand was a small black retail box.
The model number visible on the side matched the transmitter found under Ryan's desk.
Naomi exhaled slowly.
"That is very good evidence."
Ryan stared at Nathan's image.
"If Nathan helped install it, why is he suddenly confessing now?"
Emily answered.
"Because people can be guilty and still be afraid of something worse."
At 3:04 a.m., Emily's phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
She opened the message.
Ryan saw her face change.
"What?"
She turned the screen toward him.
The message contained no greeting.
No explanation.
Only six lines.
EMILY, IT'S NATHAN.
I CAN PROVE WHO FORGED THE WILL.
I CAN PROVE WHO PLANTED THE FILES.
DO NOT CALL RYAN'S SECURITY.
MARGARET HAS SOMEONE INSIDE IT.
COME ALONE OR I DISAPPEAR FOR GOOD.
Ryan read it once.
Then again.
"Absolutely not."
Emily looked at him.
"If he really has proof-"
"No."
Naomi held out her hand.
"Nobody is going alone anywhere."
A second message arrived.
Nathan sent a photograph.
He was standing in front of a dark marina, holding a black flash drive beside his face.
His lower lip was split.
There was blood on his collar.
Under the photograph was one sentence.
