Chapter 8 - THE DOOR WITH NO CAMERA

Christopher called Nora Bell back eleven times.
The number went straight to voicemail after the first attempt.
Detective Ortiz traced it to a prepaid phone activated that morning at a gas station in New Hampshire.
Security footage showed a woman in a baseball cap buying the phone with cash.
The image was poor, but St. Agnes personnel records confirmed the height and general appearance matched Nora.
She was alive.
She was frightened.
And she believed Rachel had been killed.
Christopher returned to Emma's room carrying that sentence like a blade under his ribs.
He could not tell Emma.
Not yet.
She was sitting cross-legged in bed coloring a picture of a house with Yvette.
Christopher noticed the house had no second floor.
"Where is the upstairs?"
Emma shrugged.
"I do not like upstairs."
Yvette lowered her eyes.
Christopher sat beside the bed.
"What do you not like about it?"
Emma selected a green crayon.
"Grandma's room is upstairs."
Christopher nodded slowly.
"Anything else?"
Emma drew a large tree beside the house.
"The quiet room."
Yvette looked up sharply.
"What quiet room?"
Emma glanced at her.
"The one behind Grandma's closet."
Christopher felt his pulse change.
"There is no room behind her closet."
Emma frowned.
"Yes there is."
Yvette stood.
"Mr. Christopher, the master dressing room shares a wall with the old linen passage."
"That passage was sealed before I was born."
"I was told it was sealed."
Christopher immediately called Ortiz.
The detective was at the estate overseeing the forensic search.
"Do not touch anything until I get there," Christopher said.
"You are not leaving Emma."
"Then you open it."
Ortiz was silent for half a second.
"Where?"
Christopher explained.
Yvette gave precise measurements from memory.
Ortiz took two officers and a crime scene technician to Eleanor's dressing room.
Christopher remained on video call from the hospital.
The closet looked exactly as he remembered it.
Ivory cabinetry.
Mirrored doors.
Rows of tailored jackets arranged by color.
Ortiz ran her hand along the rear wall.
"I do not see a seam."
Emma leaned toward Christopher's phone.
"Press the bird."
Everyone paused.
Christopher looked at her.
"What bird?"
"The gold bird."
Ortiz turned the camera.
A decorative brass swallow was mounted near the molding.
Christopher had seen it a thousand times.
He had never touched it.
Ortiz pressed the bird.
A section of cabinetry released with a soft mechanical click.
Yvette covered her mouth.
The panel swung inward.
Behind it was a narrow corridor.
No windows.
No visible light except a dim bulb at the far end.
Christopher felt sick.
"Emma, how do you know about this?"
She returned to her drawing.
"Grandma showed me."
"Why?"
"She said it was where bad secrets waited until people learned manners."
Christopher could barely breathe.
Ortiz entered the passage with her weapon drawn.
The corridor ended at a small room lined with shelves.
A desk stood against one wall.
There were no family heirlooms.
No jewelry.
No cash.
Only files.
Hundreds of them.
Each drawer was labeled with a name.
Employees.
Board members.
Politicians.
Doctors.
Attorneys.
Family.
Christopher saw his own name on three drawers.
Rachel had two.
Emma had one.
Juliette had four.
Daniel Crane had one.
Adrian had six.
Yvette stared at the phone screen.
"She kept leverage on everyone."
Ortiz opened Emma's drawer.
Inside were photographs, school records, copies of therapy notes Christopher had never authorized anyone to obtain, and a stack of index cards.
Each card documented a fear.
Dark rooms.
Raised voices.
Being left alone.
Losing Yvette.
Christopher.
The final card made Christopher's blood run cold.
WATER - FEAR REDUCED AFTER SWIM LESSONS, BUT PANIC RETURNS WHEN TIRED.
Below it, in Eleanor's handwriting, were four words.
SEDATION MAY INCREASE RISK.
Ortiz read the line twice.
"That is close to premeditation in her own handwriting."
Christopher's hands shook.
"Take the drawer."
"We are taking the room."
Ortiz moved to Juliette's files.
The first folder contained financial statements.
The second contained photographs of Juliette with men Christopher did not recognize.
The third contained a signed confidentiality agreement between Juliette and Adrian.
The fourth contained weekly reports written by Juliette herself.
Christopher stared at the heading on the first page.
SUBJECT: CHRISTOPHER PIERCE - EMOTIONAL ACCESS AND INFLUENCE.
Yvette whispered.
"Oh, dear God."
Ortiz read portions aloud.
Juliette had recorded Christopher's grief triggers.
His arguments with Eleanor.
His concerns about Emma.
His travel schedule.
His reluctance to discuss Rachel.
His guilt about working too much.
She had documented which compliments made him lower his guard.
Which disagreements made him withdraw.
Which subjects could be used to separate him from Emma without appearing hostile.
Christopher felt violated in a way physical theft could never match.
His engagement had been a surveillance operation disguised as intimacy.
"How long?"
Ortiz checked the first report.
"Eighteen months."
Christopher had met Juliette twenty months earlier.
Almost from the beginning.
Emma looked at his face.
"Daddy, why are you sad?"
Christopher ended the video call before she could hear more.
"Because I believed someone who lied to me."
Emma considered that.
"Grandma says smart people do not get tricked."
Christopher looked at her.
"Grandma is wrong."
"Are you smart?"
A tiny laugh escaped him despite everything.
"Sometimes."
Emma nodded seriously.
"Then smart people get tricked."
Christopher kissed her forehead.
"Apparently they do."
His phone rang again.
Ortiz.
He answered privately near the window.
"We found Adrian's file."
"What is in it?"
"Enough to explain why your mother could control him."
"Tell me."
"Financial fraud, undisclosed accounts, payments to foreign officials, and evidence linking him to a fatal boating accident nineteen years ago."
Christopher shut his eyes.
"She blackmailed her own brother-in-law."
"Looks that way."
"Then why is he helping her now?"
"Because leverage works until the victim decides cooperation is safer than exposure."
Christopher looked through the glass at Emma.
"Or until they share a goal."
"That too."
Ortiz paused.
"There is more."
"Of course there is."
"We found a floor plan of the hospital."
Christopher straightened.
"This hospital?"
"Yes."
"In Eleanor's hidden room?"
"Printed three weeks ago."
Christopher's blood chilled.
"Why?"
"The pediatric floor is marked."
Christopher turned toward the hallway.
Two uniformed officers stood outside Emma's door.
"She knew Emma might end up here."
"Or she planned for several contingencies."
Ortiz's voice hardened.
"There is an access point marked in red at the north service corridor."
Christopher looked toward the ceiling as if he could see through the building.
"Is there a camera there?"
"According to the plan, no."
Christopher walked to the door.
"I want security on it now."
He opened the door.
One officer was there.
The second was gone.
"Where is Officer Grant?"
The remaining officer frowned.
"He got a radio call to the north stairwell."
Christopher's stomach dropped.
"From whom?"
The officer reached for his radio.
Before he could answer, the hospital fire alarm began to scream.
Red strobes flashed across the ceiling.
Doors opened all along the pediatric corridor.
Nurses stepped into the hall.
A voice came over the intercom ordering evacuation of the north wing.
Christopher turned back toward Emma.
Yvette was already lifting her from the bed.
"No."
Christopher grabbed the portable oxygen unit.
"We do not move until security confirms the alarm."
A nurse rushed toward them.
"We have smoke reported near imaging."
Christopher looked at the hallway.
Patients were already being moved.
Chaos was spreading exactly as someone might want.
Then the lights flickered.
The remaining officer's radio crackled.
"Unit twelve, north service access compromised."
Christopher felt every hair on his arms rise.
A man in blue hospital scrubs appeared at the far end of the corridor pushing an empty wheelchair.
His surgical mask covered most of his face.
He moved against the flow of evacuation traffic.
Toward Emma's room.
Christopher stared at him.
The man looked up.
Their eyes met.
Christopher recognized Daniel Crane.
"Lock the door!"
The officer turned.
Crane abandoned the wheelchair and ran.
The officer chased him into the stairwell.
Christopher slammed Emma's door shut and dragged a chair beneath the handle.
Yvette held Emma against her chest.
Emma began crying.
"Daddy, what is happening?"
"Nothing is getting through that door."
The fire alarm continued screaming.
Then someone knocked three times.
Christopher froze.
"Mr. Pierce?"
A woman's voice came from the hall.
"This is Dr. Ellis."
Christopher moved toward the door.
Then Emma screamed.
"No!"
He turned.
Her face was white.
"What?"
Emma pointed at the bathroom.
The door was slowly opening from the inside.
Christopher had checked that bathroom twenty minutes earlier.
It had been empty.
A hand appeared around the edge.
May you like
And the hand was holding a syringe.
