Chapter 10 - THE BLACK-TIE TRAP

The second recording did not sound like a family argument.

It sounded like a conspiracy meeting.

Detective Ortiz transferred Yvette's device into evidence while Christopher listened to the entire file through headphones.

The conversation had taken place at 9:16 that morning in Eleanor's private breakfast room.

Adrian spoke first about the trust.

"Once the successor interest reverts, we have sixty days to consolidate the voting shares."

Eleanor answered calmly.

"Only if Christopher does not challenge the reversion."

"He cannot challenge what he refuses to admit."

A cup touched a saucer.

Then Eleanor said the words that made Christopher close his eyes.

"He has protected the lie about Emma for six years."

Adrian laughed softly.

"Then we use his own lie against him."

The recording continued.

They discussed Juliette as if she were an employee.

Not Christopher's fiancee.

Not a future member of the family.

An asset.

Adrian complained that Juliette wanted more money.

Eleanor said fear would keep her obedient.

Adrian asked what would happen if Juliette refused to go near the pool.

That was when he said he would handle Emma himself.

Eleanor refused.

"Christopher must believe Juliette acted alone."

Adrian asked why.

Eleanor answered without hesitation.

"Because grief needs a face."

Christopher took off the headphones.

He could not listen to another second.

Ortiz watched him.

"There is still twelve minutes left."

"Summarize it."

"They discuss disabling cameras, Daniel Crane's role, and a contingency if Emma survives."

Christopher looked at her.

"The hospital."

"Yes."

"And Yvette?"

"Adrian says the housekeeper has become sentimental."

Yvette sat at the opposite end of the room.

Her face had gone pale.

Ortiz continued.

"Eleanor says she will deal with you after the wedding."

Christopher almost laughed at the phrase.

After the wedding.

As if his life were a calendar they had arranged.

"Play that part."

Ortiz found the time stamp.

Eleanor's voice filled the room.

"Once Juliette is legally tied to him, Christopher can be isolated from the child without creating suspicion."

Adrian asked how.

"Marriage creates access."

Eleanor's voice remained cool.

"And access creates evidence."

Adrian laughed.

"You plan to make him look unstable."

"I plan to make him look exactly as unstable as necessary."

The recording ended with Eleanor giving Daniel Crane permission to shut down the courtyard cameras at 1:00.

Christopher stared at the device.

"That is enough."

Ortiz nodded.

"For conspiracy charges, it is significant."

"Significant?"

"I am not minimizing it."

"My mother discusses disabling cameras before my drugged child is pushed into a pool."

"And we are drafting warrants now."

Christopher walked to the window.

"They are already gone."

"Not everyone."

He turned.

Ortiz placed a photograph on the table.

Evan Crane.

Daniel's attorney brother.

"He was arrested thirty minutes ago."

Christopher stepped closer.

"Where?"

"At his office."

"Talking?"

"Not yet."

Martin entered with another stack of documents.

"He may start."

Ortiz looked at him.

"Why?"

Martin laid out a bank statement.

"Because Adrian moved eight million dollars out of a joint offshore account this morning."

Christopher frowned.

"Whose joint account?"

"Adrian and Evan Crane."

Ortiz understood first.

"Adrian abandoned him."

Martin nodded.

"And took the money."

Christopher looked at the photograph of Evan.

"Then tell him."

Ortiz gave him a dry look.

"We know how interviews work."

For the first time in two days, Christopher almost smiled.

It vanished when his phone buzzed with a message from Pierce Holdings.

An emergency board meeting had been called for 8:00 p.m.

The notice had been issued by Adrian under an old proxy authority.

The agenda contained one item.

TEMPORARY REMOVAL OF CHRISTOPHER PIERCE AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE AND TRUST REPRESENTATIVE DUE TO INCAPACITY AND REPUTATIONAL RISK.

Christopher handed the phone to Martin.

"Can he do this?"

Martin read quickly.

"He can call the meeting."

"Can he remove me?"

"Not legally as trust representative if your co-trustee status is recognized."

"But the board can remove me as CEO."

"Yes."

Christopher looked at the time.

Six hours.

Juliette's interview was already dominating financial news.

Shares in Pierce Holdings had fallen seven percent.

Board members were terrified.

Eleanor and Adrian had failed to kill Emma.

Now they were using the scandal they created to remove Christopher from power before he could use the trust against them.

"I am going to the meeting."

Ortiz shook her head.

"You are a target."

"So is Emma."

"Which is why you should stay here."

Christopher looked through the glass toward his daughter's room.

"If they remove me tonight, they control the company security department, the aviation department, the internal legal budget, and every private investigator on retainer."

Martin nodded grimly.

"He is right."

Ortiz did not like it.

"Then we secure the building."

The meeting was scheduled in the Grand Pierce Ballroom instead of the usual boardroom.

Adrian had invited major shareholders, outside directors, senior executives, and selected press under the justification of transparency.

Christopher saw the real purpose immediately.

Humiliation worked better with an audience.

By 7:45 p.m., black cars lined the circular drive of Pierce Tower.

Men in tuxedos and women in evening clothes crossed the marble lobby beneath television cameras.

Christopher arrived in the same suit he had worn at the hospital.

No tie.

No polished presentation.

No interest in pretending the day was normal.

Martin walked beside him.

Detective Ortiz and plainclothes officers remained close enough to intervene.

Yvette had insisted on coming.

Christopher refused until she said one sentence.

"I spent thirty-two years standing behind that family."

She met his eyes.

"Tonight I would like to stand in front of the truth."

Now she walked into the ballroom wearing her housekeeper's black dress rather than evening clothes.

People stared.

Yvette did not lower her head.

The room quieted when Christopher entered.

Screens around the ballroom displayed a live video feed.

Adrian appeared remotely from an undisclosed location.

Eleanor sat beside him.

Christopher stopped in the aisle.

His mother looked immaculate.

No one watching the screen would have guessed police were searching for her.

Adrian smiled.

"Christopher, I am glad you decided to join us."

"Tell them where you are."

A murmur moved through the room.

Adrian's smile remained.

"This is a corporate meeting, not a family tantrum."

Christopher walked toward the front table.

"You fled a police search with my mother."

Eleanor spoke.

"We left a hostile environment created by your emotional instability."

Christopher laughed quietly.

"There it is."

The board chair struck the table with a small gavel.

"We will proceed in order."

Christopher looked around the room.

"Before anyone votes, I want every director to know why this meeting was called."

Adrian interrupted.

"Because the chief executive concealed the identity of a beneficiary, created legal exposure, threatened his fiancee, and caused a public crisis."

Screens changed.

Juliette's interview appeared again.

Several directors shifted uneasily.

Christopher let the clip play.

When it ended, he nodded toward Yvette.

"Now play mine."

A technician connected the authenticated copy of Yvette's second recording.

Adrian's voice filled the ballroom.

"If Juliette loses her nerve, I will handle the child myself."

The room changed instantly.

People who had been whispering stopped.

Eleanor's recorded voice followed.

"Christopher must believe Juliette acted alone."

On screen, Adrian's face went rigid.

Eleanor did not move.

Christopher watched the directors instead.

Some looked shocked.

Some looked frightened.

Two looked guilty.

He memorized their faces.

The recording reached the discussion of disabling cameras.

One director stood.

"Turn that off."

Christopher looked at him.

Charles Fenwick had chaired the family's risk committee for nine years.

"Why?"

Fenwick's face was gray.

"Because this is privileged family material."

Ortiz stepped forward from the side aisle.

"No, sir."

Every eye turned to her.

"It is evidence in an active criminal investigation."

Fenwick sat down.

Too quickly.

Christopher noticed.

So did Ortiz.

The recording ended.

Silence filled the ballroom.

Christopher placed Rachel's authenticated birth declaration on the table.

"Emma is my biological daughter."

He placed the original trust schedule beside it.

"Her successor interest vested at birth."

Another murmur moved through the room.

Adrian leaned toward the camera.

"That document has not been validated."

Martin stood.

"It has."

He distributed certified copies of the trust instrument.

"And Christopher became co-trustee on his thirtieth birthday."

The board chair looked stunned.

"Why was the board never informed?"

Martin faced the screen.

"Ask Eleanor."

For the first time, Eleanor's composure cracked.

"My husband intended that authority to be exercised only when Christopher was prepared."

Christopher looked at her image.

"You decided I was never prepared because my ignorance kept you powerful."

Eleanor's eyes hardened.

"You are proving my judgment correct tonight."

Christopher smiled without warmth.

"Then watch this."

He nodded to the technician.

Rachel's video appeared on every screen.

The ballroom watched a dead woman explain how Eleanor pressured her into a guardianship agreement and how someone altered her hospital chart.

Eleanor's face turned white.

Adrian disappeared from his camera for several seconds.

When Rachel named Dr. Samuel Hargrove, one of the two guilty-looking directors stood abruptly and headed for the exit.

Ortiz murmured into her radio.

Plainclothes officers stopped him at the doors.

Christopher recognized him as Dr. Hargrove's former business partner.

The room erupted.

The board chair called for order.

Then every screen suddenly went black.

The ballroom lights died.

Someone screamed.

Emergency lights flickered on seconds later.

Christopher's first instinct was not to look at the stage.

It was to look for Yvette.

She was no longer beside Martin.

"Yvette?"

No answer.

Ortiz shouted for the doors to be sealed.

Christopher saw movement near the service corridor.

A man in catering whites dragged Yvette through a side door with one arm around her neck.

Christopher ran.

He reached the corridor just as the door slammed.

Ortiz was behind him.

The hallway beyond was empty except for Yvette's knitting bag on the floor.

Inside it, her phone was still connected to Emma's hospital video call.

Christopher picked it up.

Emma's frightened face filled the screen.

"Daddy?"

Christopher forced himself to breathe.

"I am here."

Emma looked past him at the dark corridor.

"Where did Miss Yvette go?"

Christopher could not answer.

Then a text arrived on Yvette's phone from an unknown number.

One photograph.

Yvette sat bound to a chair beneath a bare lightbulb.

A blue leather appointment book rested on the table in front of her.

Below the image were six words.
