Chapter 18 - THE MAN AT NATHAN'S TABLE

Victor Lang had been at the gala.

Nathan remembered exactly where he sat.

Table three.

Six seats from the ballroom doors.

Close enough to see Sophie fall.

Close enough to watch Nathan end the engagement.

Close enough to understand that years of planning had begun to collapse.

Victor had approached Nathan afterward and squeezed his shoulder.

"Take care of your girl," he had said.

Nathan remembered thanking him.

Now Emily's letter named Victor as the person who had warned Vanessa about the foundation audit five years earlier.

Nathan read a police scan of the letter at 1:18 in the morning.

Emily's handwriting was unmistakable.

Nathan,

If this letter is open, then someone has challenged Sophie's protection and I was right to be worried.

I need you to know that Vanessa Cole did not find the trust files alone.

Victor Lang asked me twice for access to foundation beneficiary records even though Mercer Holdings had no role in the foundation.

When I refused, Vanessa accessed them anyway.

I later learned Victor and Adrian Vale attended the same graduate business program and served together on a private health investment board.

I do not know what they planned.

I only know Victor lied to me about knowing Vale.

Please do not confront him without evidence.

Nathan stopped reading.

Victor had been in his life before Emily.

Before Sophie.

Before Mercer Holdings became what it was now.

He had stood beside Nathan at Emily's funeral.

He had carried Sophie's car seat to the limousine because Nathan's hands were shaking too badly to manage the buckle.

He had told Nathan to take as much time away from work as he needed.

Then, two years later, Victor had encouraged him to attend the museum benefit where he met Vanessa.

Nathan stared at the letter.

"He introduced us."

Rebecca looked up.

"What?"

"Not directly."

Nathan's memory sharpened.

Victor had insisted Nathan attend.

He had told him one dinner would not betray Emily's memory.

He had seated Nathan beside the charity committee.

Vanessa had approached during dessert.

Nathan had believed the meeting was chance.

"Victor put me in that room."

Ruiz asked, "Do you have proof he arranged the introduction?"

"No."

"Then do not call him."

Nathan looked at her.

"He is my CFO."

"Which means he may know exactly what evidence you have and what you are about to do."

Marcus entered with his laptop.

"He already knows something."

"What?"

"Victor accessed the executive archive six minutes ago."

Nathan stood.

"From where?"

"Mercer Holdings headquarters."

"At one in the morning?"

"His credentials."

"What did he open?"

Marcus turned the screen.

Sophie's trust summary.

Nathan's emergency successor designation.

Board control provisions in case of Nathan's incapacity.

The same categories Vanessa had photographed.

Ruiz pulled out her phone.

"We need a warrant."

Nathan stared at the activity log.

Victor was not hiding anymore.

Or he did not know Emily's letter had been recovered.

Rebecca asked, "What happens at Mercer Holdings if Nathan is declared incompetent?"

Nathan answered without looking away from the screen.

"The board appoints an interim executive chair."

"Who is first in the succession policy?"

"Victor."

The final financial motive clicked into place.

Vanessa gained access to Sophie's trust.

Vale and Keene gained medical payments.

Daniel gained guardianship fees and control.

Victor gained Mercer Holdings.

Everyone received something from Nathan being declared unstable.

Rebecca whispered, "This was never just about the trust."

Nathan shook his head.

"It was about both fortunes."

Mercer Holdings was worth billions.

Victor did not need to steal the company permanently.

An interim appointment during a competency dispute could allow him to approve transactions, move assets, restructure voting agreements, and bury money before Nathan returned.

Nathan thought about recent acquisitions Victor had pushed aggressively.

He called the company's outside auditor.

The partner answered sleepily.

Nathan did not apologize.

"Freeze any nonroutine transaction requiring CFO approval."

"Nathan, what is this about?"

"Possible internal fraud."

The partner was fully awake now.

"How serious?"

"Serious enough that I want independent review before sunrise."

"Do you have board authority?"

"Use the emergency audit clause in Section Eight."

Rebecca nodded.

The clause allowed the chair to trigger an independent review without CFO consent where suspected officer misconduct threatened corporate control.

The auditor agreed.

At 1:39 A.M., Victor's system access was suspended pending audit.

At 1:42, Victor called Nathan.

Everyone in the room looked at the phone.

Ruiz said, "Answer."

Nathan did.

"Victor."

Victor sounded calm.

"What the hell are you doing?"

Nathan almost admired the performance.

"Auditing."

"At one forty in the morning?"

"You are at the office."

A pause.

"I came in because the company is being destroyed by your personal scandal."

Nathan looked at Ruiz.

"You opened Sophie's trust summary."

"I opened executive continuity files."

"Why?"

"Because the board is asking what happens if you are arrested or hospitalized."

"The board did not ask you that."

"You do not know what the board is asking because you have been hiding in a hospital for two days."

Nathan's anger rose.

Victor heard it and pressed harder.

"This is exactly the problem."

"What problem?"

"You are not thinking clearly."

Nathan looked at Ruiz again.

Victor was using the same language as the competency affidavit.

"Not thinking clearly."

"Correct."

"Emotionally unstable?"

Victor paused.

"I did not say that."

"Prone to uncontrolled anger?"

Longer pause.

Nathan's voice became quiet.

"Unable to make sound financial decisions under stress related to my daughter's condition?"

Victor said nothing.

The exact phrase came from Vale's confidential draft.

Nathan had never shared it with Victor.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Ruiz wrote one word on her pad.

GOT HIM.

Nathan continued.

"Where did you hear those words?"

Victor recovered quickly.

"I am not playing this game."

"You just quoted a medical affidavit that has never been filed publicly."

"Everyone knows you are under scrutiny."

"Not those words."

Victor's breathing changed.

Nathan heard office sounds behind him.

A drawer.

Paper.

Footsteps.

"Victor, do not leave the building."

Victor laughed.

"You do not give me orders about my freedom."

"No."

Nathan looked at Ruiz.

"The police will."

Victor ended the call.

Ruiz's team was already moving toward Mercer Holdings.

Marcus pulled building cameras.

Victor appeared in the executive corridor carrying a leather briefcase.

He entered the private elevator.

Instead of selecting the lobby, he used a service code Nathan did not know.

The elevator descended below parking level two.

Nathan frowned.

"There is no level three."

Marcus looked at him.

"Apparently there is."

The building had been renovated eight years earlier.

Victor had overseen the project.

Old architectural plans showed a sub-basement records space that had been sealed from standard access.

Marcus searched newer maintenance maps.

A freight tunnel connected the sub-basement to the adjacent parking structure.

"He built himself an exit," Ruiz said.

Police entered the main tower while another unit moved to the neighboring garage.

Victor's elevator remained stopped below ground.

Cameras in the hidden level did not exist on Mercer's standard system.

At 2:07, an officer found the tunnel door open.

At 2:11, they found Victor's briefcase abandoned beside a stairwell.

Inside were cash, two passports, and a printed flight plan for a private jet leaving at three.

Victor was gone.

Nathan looked at the flight plan.

Destination.

Cayman Islands.

Passenger list.

Victor Lang.

Adrian Vale.

Mara Keene.

Daniel Vale had already been arrested, but his name remained on the old plan.

And the final passenger.

Vanessa Crowley.

Nathan looked at Ruiz.

"They were all leaving tonight."

"Before the gala?"

Rebecca checked the creation date.

The flight had been booked six weeks ago.

Departure at 3:00 A.M. the night after the planned guardianship hearing.

They had expected Sophie to be in Blackthorn.

They had expected Nathan to be under an incapacity order.

They had expected Victor to hold temporary control of Mercer Holdings.

Then they had planned to leave the country before the first deep audit began.

Ruiz received an update.

"Private airport is locked down."

Nathan waited.

"Vale is not there."

"Keene?"

"No."

"Victor?"

Ruiz shook her head.

"Not yet."

Nathan looked at Marcus.

"Other airfields?"

"Checking."

At 2:23, a Mercer facilities engineer called.

He had found something in the hidden sub-basement.

Ruiz put him on speaker.

"What?"

"A server rack."

Marcus sat forward.

"Connected to our network?"

"Not officially."

"What does that mean?"

"It has a separate fiber line."

Nathan's stomach tightened.

"Where does it go?"

"I am tracing it."

Two minutes later, the engineer answered.

"It connects to an external data center leased by VCR Management."

Rebecca looked at Nathan.

"Inside your building."

Victor had hosted part of the conspiracy under Nathan's own office tower.

Police secured the servers for forensic imaging.

Marcus was allowed to view only directory names without altering data.

He read them aloud.

MERCER.

GRANT.

ELLIS.

COLE.

HARPER FOUNDATION.

BLACKTHORN.

COURT TEMPLATES.

VOICE MODELS.

Nathan's face hardened at the last folder.

There were generated voice profiles for more than Nathan.

Judges.

Parents.

Doctors.

Trust officers.

They had built a library of voices that could be used to manufacture consent, threats, admissions, and phone instructions.

Ruiz said, "Do not open anything until the warrant is expanded."

Marcus nodded.

Then a new file appeared on the live directory.

Not old.

New.

Created at 2:31 A.M.

Someone was still connected remotely.

The filename was SOPHIE_FINAL.

Nathan stared at it.

"Can you see where the connection is coming from?"

Marcus typed.

"Working."

The file grew in size.

Whatever was uploading was not finished.

Ruiz called the cyber unit.

Marcus traced the remote session through three relays.

The final connection came from a cellular modem.

Location data narrowed it to an industrial district near the river.

Nathan recognized the address when it appeared.

An old Mercer Media soundstage.

The same building where Nathan had recorded the voice synthesis training samples six months earlier.

"Victor knows that studio."

Marcus nodded.

"So does Vanessa."

Ruiz stood.

"Police are going."

Nathan looked at the file name again.

SOPHIE_FINAL.

"What is in the file?"

"We cannot open it yet."

Then the upload completed.

A second file appeared.

RELEASE_AT_6AM.

Nathan felt a chill.

"They scheduled something."

Marcus examined the server task list.

His expression changed.

"Not something."

"What?"

"A video package."

"To who?"

Marcus looked at him.

"Every major news outlet on the press distribution list."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"Can you stop it?"

"Yes."

"Do it."

Marcus hesitated.

"We need to preserve the evidence first."

Ruiz nodded.

"Clone the job, then disable release."

They did.

The package never reached the media.

But the forensic preview became visible.

It showed Sophie crying in a hospital room.

An adult voice asked what happened.

Sophie answered in a voice that sounded exactly like hers.

"Daddy pushed me."

Nathan stared at the screen.

Sophie had never said those words.

Someone had built a synthetic model of his daughter's voice too.

Then Marcus traced the source device inside the soundstage.

A camera there turned on remotely.

The live feed showed three people in the control room.

Victor Lang.

Dr. Adrian Vale.

Dr. Mara Keene.

Victor looked straight at the camera.

He seemed to realize the feed was no longer private.

He reached for a switch.

Before the screen went black, Nathan saw Vale holding a red folder.

Across the front was written one name.

May you like

SOPHIE MERCER.
