Chapter 17 - THE LETTER IN VANESSA'S HAND

Nathan watched Vanessa approach Claire's front door through a stolen camera feed two thousand miles away.
For one terrible second, distance felt like helplessness made physical.
"Claire, go upstairs," he said into the phone.
Claire's voice sharpened.
"Why?"
"Vanessa is outside your house."
Silence.
Then Claire whispered, "How do you know?"
"They have a camera on your property."
"Who is they?"
"I will explain later."
Nathan heard the doorbell ring through Claire's phone and through the live surveillance feed at the same time.
"Do not answer it."
Claire moved away from the front hall.
"I'm calling 911."
"Marcus already did."
Marcus was speaking with Oregon police on another line, transmitting the Northpoint feed and Vanessa's description.
Rebecca stood beside Nathan's desk with Detective Ruiz.
Sophie slept upstairs under guard.
Nathan had refused to leave her again.
He would help Claire from where he was.
The doorbell rang a second time.
Then Vanessa knocked.
Not violently.
Three polite taps.
"Claire?"
Her voice carried faintly through the phone.
Claire froze.
Vanessa knocked again.
"I know you're home."
Nathan looked at the live feed.
Vanessa held a large cream envelope in one hand.
Emily's stolen letter.
Claire whispered, "She has Emily's envelope."
"I see it."
"Why would she bring it here?"
Rebecca answered quietly from Nathan's side of the call.
"Because she wants something only you can give her."
Vanessa moved away from the front door.
On the monitoring screen, she disappeared beneath the camera angle.
Nathan's chest tightened.
"Where did she go?"
Marcus switched feeds.
A side camera showed Vanessa walking along the house toward the kitchen.
"Claire, move away from the back of the house."
Claire did.
A second later, glass shattered.
Nathan heard Claire gasp.
Vanessa had broken the small pane beside the kitchen door.
She reached through and unlocked it.
"Police are six minutes away," Marcus said.
Six minutes sounded impossible.
Nathan kept his voice controlled.
"Claire, upstairs bedroom."
"I'm not hiding in my own house."
"This is not about pride."
"Neither was Emily."
"Claire."
She was already moving toward the staircase.
Vanessa entered the kitchen.
Her footsteps were slow.
"Claire, I just want to talk."
Claire whispered into the phone, "She says that like a person who broke a window."
Nathan almost smiled despite the fear.
"Keep moving."
Claire reached the second floor and locked herself inside the primary bedroom.
The house had no panic room.
The bedroom door was solid wood, but the lock was ordinary.
Vanessa walked through the downstairs rooms.
She did not hurry.
That frightened Nathan more than if she had run.
"Claire?"
Vanessa's voice came from the foot of the stairs.
"I brought you something from your sister."
Claire covered her mouth.
Nathan's hands curled around the edge of the desk.
Vanessa climbed the stairs.
One step at a time.
"Emily wrote this for you."
Claire looked at Nathan through the video call.
Her face had changed.
"She is lying."
"Probably."
"Emily's sealed letter was addressed to Sophie."
"I know."
Vanessa reached the bedroom door.
She knocked once.
"Open the door."
Claire stayed silent.
"If I wanted to hurt you, I would not have knocked."
Rebecca muttered, "That is not reassuring."
Vanessa tried the handle.
The lock held.
"I need your signature, Claire."
Nathan looked at Rebecca.
She had predicted correctly.
Claire answered through the door.
"On what?"
Nathan almost told her to stay silent.
Ruiz raised one hand.
"Let her talk."
Oregon police were now patched into the call.
Everything Vanessa said was being recorded.
Vanessa rested one hand against the door.
"A statement clarifying Emily's guardianship wishes."
Claire laughed.
"You mean the wishes you stole from the vault?"
Silence.
Then Vanessa said, "Nathan filled your head quickly."
"You entered a bank disguised as me."
"I did not."
"Mara Keene did."
Another silence.
Nathan saw Ruiz look toward Rebecca.
Claire had just placed the name directly in front of Vanessa.
If Vanessa denied knowing Keene, the evidence would destroy her.
If she acknowledged her, she tied herself closer to the vault theft.
Vanessa chose a third path.
"Mara made choices I did not approve."
Ruiz wrote the sentence down.
Claire's voice remained steady.
"And the forged form naming you?"
"Emily wanted me involved."
"Emily fired you."
The hallway went silent.
Nathan watched Vanessa's face on the Northpoint camera feed.
For the first time, the performance disappeared.
"She overreacted."
Claire's eyes met Nathan's through the phone.
Nathan did not move.
Claire said, "She caught you stealing private records."
"I was doing my job."
"Your job was donor records."
"Those children needed help."
"Their money needed help getting into your company."
Vanessa hit the bedroom door once with the heel of her hand.
"You do not know what you are talking about."
Claire flinched but stayed silent.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Your sister created a fortune for a child who may never be able to manage it."
Nathan felt something inside him turn cold.
Claire answered softly.
"Sophie was four when Emily died."
"Exactly."
"You had no idea what she would be capable of."
"Neither did Emily."
Vanessa sounded angry now.
"But she locked everything away as if money becomes moral because a child owns it."
Ruiz whispered, "Keep her talking."
Claire did.
"So you decided you deserved it?"
"I decided it should be used."
"For Blackthorn?"
"For care."
"For VCR Management."
Vanessa went quiet again.
Then she laughed.
"Nathan gave you the numbers."
Claire answered, "The police have the numbers."
The change in Vanessa was immediate.
She struck the door again.
"Open it."
Claire backed away.
Nathan looked at Marcus.
"How far are police?"
"Ninety seconds."
Vanessa struck the door a third time.
The frame cracked.
"Claire, bathroom," Nathan said.
Claire moved into the adjoining bathroom and locked that door too.
Vanessa kicked the bedroom door.
The lock tore partially from the frame.
"Open this door!"
The careful fiancee from the ballroom was gone.
The crying woman at the press conference was gone.
The person behind both masks was finally audible.
"You and Emily always thought being righteous made you smarter than everyone else."
Claire whispered, "She said Emily."
Nathan heard it.
So did Ruiz.
Vanessa kicked again.
The bedroom door burst inward.
Claire moved deeper into the bathroom.
Vanessa entered the bedroom.
The stolen letter remained in her hand.
"Sign the statement and I leave."
Claire answered through the bathroom door.
"What does it say?"
"That Emily changed her mind about you being Sophie's guardian."
"And chose you?"
"Yes."
"A woman she fired?"
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"She regretted firing me."
"Did she tell you that before or after she died?"
Nathan closed his eyes.
Rebecca whispered, "Claire has always had excellent timing."
Vanessa slammed something onto a dresser.
"You think this is funny?"
"No."
Claire's voice became quieter.
"I think Sophie almost lost the ability to walk because of you."
Nathan looked at Ruiz.
This was the dangerous question.
Vanessa's breathing was audible through the phone.
"That was not supposed to happen."
No one in Nathan's room moved.
Claire said, "What was supposed to happen?"
Vanessa realized too late what she had said.
"She fell."
"You just said that was not supposed to happen."
"I meant the severity."
Ruiz's eyes sharpened.
Claire pressed.
"So you expected her to fall."
"Stop twisting my words."
"Did you push Sophie on the stairs?"
Vanessa hit the bathroom door.
"Open the door."
"Did you?"
"She was supposed to stumble."
Nathan stopped breathing.
Claire's face crumpled, but she stayed focused.
"You pushed her."
"I barely touched her."
The exact phrase from the ballroom.
Nathan felt nausea rise.
Vanessa continued, faster now.
"She grabbed the rail wrong."
"Because you told her not to use it?"
"She was always scared of everything."
"She was learning to walk safely."
"She was useful after the fall."
Silence.
Vanessa seemed to hear her own sentence.
Nathan did too.
Useful after the fall.
Not hurt.
Not suffering.
Useful.
A siren became audible outside Claire's house.
Vanessa turned toward the bedroom window.
Claire heard it too.
"Police are here."
Vanessa ran.
On the live exterior feed, Nathan watched her climb through a side window onto a porch roof.
She dropped into the yard and sprinted toward the black sedan.
Two patrol cars entered the driveway.
Vanessa abandoned the sedan and cut through a hedge into the neighboring property.
Officers followed.
Nathan listened to radio traffic from Oregon.
Foot pursuit.
Backyard.
Female suspect moving east.
Fence.
Alley.
Then silence.
Thirty seconds later, an officer spoke.
"Suspect in custody."
Nathan sat down for the first time in ten minutes.
Claire unlocked the bathroom door.
She was shaking.
"Are you okay?" Nathan asked.
"I will be when somebody fixes my door."
He almost laughed.
Then Claire looked toward the dresser.
"The letter."
Vanessa had left it behind.
An officer entered with gloves and bagged the envelope before Claire touched it.
The seal had been broken.
Inside was Emily's handwritten letter.
It was addressed to Nathan, not Sophie.
The safe deposit inventory had been wrong.
Claire read only the first line before handing it to police.
Nathan saw her face change.
"What does it say?"
Claire looked at the camera.
"It says Emily knew Vanessa was not working alone."
Nathan's chest tightened.
"Who else?"
Claire looked down at the page.
"She names someone inside Mercer Holdings."
Nathan went still.
"Who?"
Claire read the name.
Nathan felt the floor disappear beneath him.
Victor Lang.
His chief financial officer.

His closest business adviser for twelve years.
