By 8:00 AM the next morning, Julian was standing outside Emma’s temporary apartment, his perfection cracking at the edges.

When she opened the door, he didn't ask how she was. He demanded the return of the flash drive she’d taken from his office.

"You're blowing this out of proportion, Emma," Julian said, his voice dropping into his familiar, manipulative corporate tone.

"It's just asset management. My mother was trying to secure our future. If you leak this, you ruin us all."

"No, Julian," Emma said calmly, leaning against the doorframe. "It secures your future. It ruins mine. I already sent copies to an independent auditor."

Julian’s face went pale. The realization hit him: the quiet, compliant woman he thought he married was gone. She wasn't playing defense anymore.
