Chapter 5: A Different Birthday

One year later, sunlight filled Ernesto's backyard.

There were no luxury decorations.

No extravagant guests.

Just family.

Friends.

Laughter that no longer sounded forced.

Valeria stood beside her father wearing a simple blue dress.

The bruise was long gone.

So was the fear.

She had reopened her architecture business.

She volunteered at a community support center, helping others rebuild their lives after controlling relationships.

As Ernesto placed a birthday cake on the table, everyone smiled.

"No speeches this year," he joked.

Valeria laughed.

"I actually have one."

She looked around the table.

"A year ago, I thought surviving was enough."

She reached over and gently squeezed her father's hand.

"Now I know living is something completely different."

The family applauded.

Ernesto lit the candles.

This time, when Valeria closed her eyes to make a wish...

She didn't wish for someone to rescue her.

She wished for the courage to keep moving forward.

Then she opened her eyes...

And blew out every candle.
