Chapter 2: Five Years of Silence

Inside the study, detectives began photographing every document.

Valeria remained outside until Ernesto quietly opened the patio door.

"You don't have to protect anyone anymore."

For a long moment she simply stared at him.

Then something inside her finally broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

She simply collapsed into her father's arms.

"I thought he'd stop," she whispered.

"I kept believing every apology."

Ernesto closed his eyes.

"I'm sorry I didn't see it sooner."

Valeria shook her head.

"He made sure nobody would."

She explained everything.

The first slap had happened only three months after the wedding.

Then came isolation.

Her friends disappeared.

Her bank accounts slowly became joint accounts.

Her phone passwords were demanded.

Her emails monitored.

Whenever bruises appeared, Julian bought expensive makeup.

Whenever neighbors asked questions, Ofelia always had an explanation.

"She falls easily."

"She's clumsy."

"She's under stress."

Little by little, Valeria had disappeared inside her own marriage.

Only one thing Julian never realized—

Every suspicious financial transaction eventually reached Ernesto.

As a career prosecutor, Ernesto recognized patterns ordinary people never noticed.

Six months earlier he quietly began collecting evidence.

The birthday invitation hadn't been a family celebration.

It had been the final piece.

The confession.
