CHAPTER 3: THE WEDDING BROADCAST

Smoke rose through the hotel corridors.

Sprinklers activated, soaking the flowers and silk decorations lining the hallway. Guests rushed toward the exits as security officers shouted instructions.

Victor used the chaos to disappear.

Adrian grabbed Margaret’s arm.

“Where is he going?”

“There’s a private garage beneath the hotel.”

Elena took the flash drive from Margaret.

“If the server room is gone, this may be the only copy.”

“It isn’t,” Margaret said.

Elena stared at her.

“Rebecca made a second copy.”

“My mother has another one?”

Margaret shook her head.

“She gave it to Daniel before he died.”

Elena’s heart pounded.

“My father?”

“He hid it somewhere Victor could never reach.”

“Where?”

Margaret looked toward the ballroom.

“In your wedding gift.”

The three of them hurried downstairs.

The once-luxurious reception had become a flooded disaster. Tables were overturned. Champagne glasses covered the marble floor. Guests gathered near the exits while firefighters entered through the main doors.

At the center of the ballroom stood a large wooden chest covered in white roses.

Elena recognized it immediately.

Her mother had sent it that morning with a short note:

Something old. Something true.

Adrian tore away the flowers and forced open the lock.

Inside were family photographs, old letters, and a small music box Elena had owned as a child.

She picked it up with shaking hands.

“My father gave me this.”

She turned the key.

The familiar melody began to play.

Then Adrian noticed a tiny metal compartment beneath the velvet lining.

Inside was a memory card.

Elena closed her eyes.

Her father had hidden the truth inside the last gift he ever gave her.

A surviving projector near the dance floor still had power from an emergency battery. Adrian inserted the memory card while Margaret locked the ballroom doors.

The main screen flickered.

A video appeared.

Daniel Cross sat in a parked car, his face tense and exhausted.

“If you are watching this, Victor Vale has already tried to silence me.”

Elena covered her mouth.

She had not heard her father’s voice in twenty years.

On the recording, Daniel described fake contracts, stolen pension funds, and payments made to public officials. Then his voice changed.

“Rebecca and I were prepared to testify. Victor learned where we were staying. He ordered one of his security men to disable my car.”

The video briefly cut to hidden-camera footage.

Victor appeared inside a garage, speaking to a man in a dark uniform.

“Make it look mechanical,” Victor said.

Elena’s knees weakened.

Adrian held her upright.

The footage continued.

Margaret appeared next.

Younger. Frightened.

She entered the garage after Victor left and photographed the security man beside Daniel’s car.

The video ended with Daniel looking into the camera.

“Margaret Vale saved the evidence. She risked her life to help us. If something happens to me, protect her and her son.”

Adrian looked at his mother.

“You tried to stop him.”

Margaret’s voice broke.

“I tried. But I was too late.”

A slow clap came from the balcony.

Victor stood above them with two armed security guards.

“You always had a talent for dramatic timing, Margaret.”

He looked down at the remaining wedding guests, many of whom had recorded the video on their phones.

Victor’s face darkened.

“Everyone will surrender their phones before leaving.”

No one moved.

Then the projector screen suddenly changed.

A red icon appeared in the corner.

LIVE BROADCAST: 38,412 VIEWERS.

Elena looked at Adrian.

He gave Victor a cold smile.

“I started streaming the moment the video began.”

Victor stared at his son.

“You just destroyed your own family.”

Adrian stepped in front of Elena.

“No.”

He looked at the thousands of viewers rapidly joining the broadcast.

“I destroyed yours.”

Police sirens surrounded the hotel.

Victor turned toward the private stairwell.

But one of his own guards lowered his weapon.

Then the other did the same.

The first guard stepped away from Victor.

“We’re not going to prison for you.”

May you like

Victor stood alone on the balcony as officers entered the ballroom.

For the first time in his life, the most powerful man in the room had nowhere left to run.
