CHAPTER 1: THE MAN IN THE DOORWAY

Adrian Vale stood in the doorway of the bridal suite, his fists clenched at his sides.
His father, Victor Vale, slowly lowered the silver-handled cane he had been holding above Elena.
For one terrible second, no one moved.
Elena remained on the edge of the bed, trembling beneath the silk shawl wrapped around her shoulders. A thin red mark crossed her wrist where Victor had grabbed her. Her wedding gown, flawless only an hour earlier, was now wrinkled and torn near the hem.
Adrian’s eyes moved from her frightened face to the cane in his father’s hand.
“Step away from my wife.”
Victor’s cold expression barely changed.
“You don’t understand what she’s done.”
“I understand that you cornered her in a locked room.”
“She came into this family under false pretenses.”
Adrian entered the suite and shut the door behind him.
Elena tried to stand, but her knees nearly gave out. Adrian immediately crossed the room and helped her up.
“Did he hurt you?”
Victor laughed quietly.
“Look at you. Defending her before you even know the truth.”
Adrian turned toward him.
“Whatever she did, you had no right to touch her.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“She isn’t the innocent woman you married.”
Elena gripped Adrian’s arm.
“Please,” she whispered. “Don’t listen to him.”
Victor reached into his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a folded photograph.
He tossed it onto the bed.
Adrian stared at it.
The photograph showed Elena standing beside an older woman outside a small courthouse. On the back was a handwritten date from three months earlier.
Victor spoke carefully.
“That woman is Rebecca Cross.”
Adrian frowned.
The name meant nothing to him.
Victor continued.
“She was the accountant who tried to destroy Vale Industries eighteen years ago. She stole private records, accused me of fraud, and disappeared before the trial.”
Elena’s face turned pale.
Adrian looked at her.
“You know her?”
Elena swallowed.
“She’s my mother.”
The room became painfully silent.
Victor stepped closer.
“Your wife didn’t marry you because she loved you. She entered this family to finish what her mother started.”
Adrian slowly released Elena’s arm.
“Is that true?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“My name was Elena Cross before my stepfather adopted me.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
She looked at him desperately.
“Yes. I knew who your father was before I met you.”
The confession struck Adrian harder than any physical blow.
Victor’s voice softened with calculated satisfaction.
“She has been lying to you since the day you met.”
Adrian stared at the woman he had married less than two hours earlier.
“Was any of it real?”
Elena opened her mouth, but no words came.
That hesitation was enough.
Adrian stepped away from her.
Victor smiled.
Then Elena reached beneath the mattress and pulled out a small black flash drive.
“I came here for evidence,” she said. “But what I found is worse than anything my mother ever suspected.”
Victor’s confidence finally cracked.
Elena held up the drive.
“This contains proof that Rebecca Cross never stole from Vale Industries.”
She looked directly at Victor.
“It proves you framed her.”
Victor lunged forward.
Adrian stepped between them.
May you like
But before anyone could reach the drive, every light in the bridal suite went dark.
And somewhere inside the room, a gun clicked.
