Chapter 5 - THE SECOND PHONE

Katherine remembered the second phone at 3:41 in the morning.

She was lying awake in Rachel's guest room when the image returned with uncomfortable clarity.

The bathroom doors had opened.

Daniel had stepped forward.

Everyone had been staring at Ava.

Then Daniel had bent near the vanity and straightened with his jacket folded over one arm.

Something dark had been pressed beneath it.

A phone.

Katherine sat up.

She called Rachel from the room across the hall.

Rachel answered on the first ring.

"You remember something."

"I saw it."

Within minutes they were in the kitchen with the security video open again.

Rachel slowed the footage frame by frame.

At normal speed, Daniel appeared to pick up his jacket.

At one-quarter speed, the movement was obvious.

His right hand reached beneath the vanity shelf.

His fingers closed around a black phone.

He slipped it into the jacket before turning toward the guests.

Rachel froze the image.

"There."

Katherine leaned closer.

The phone had a matte black case with a narrow red stripe.

She had never seen Daniel use it.

Rachel made a still image.

"If Ava is right, that device may contain the edited recordings."

"Then Daniel knows we will look for it."

"He may already have destroyed it."

Katherine shook her head.

"No."

Rachel looked at her.

"Why not?"

"Because Daniel doesn't destroy leverage."

Katherine had lived with him long enough to understand that much.

He kept old emails.

He kept contracts everyone else would shred.

He kept photographs from failed negotiations.

He liked possessing proof that could someday be useful.

Even during harmless arguments, he remembered exact phrases years later.

Daniel collected leverage because leverage made him feel safe.

The second phone was not simply evidence.

It was power.

Katherine suspected he would keep it until he had used every piece of it.

At 7:20, Rachel received an alert from a media monitoring service.

A new article had appeared on a business news site.

The headline read:

COLE DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE STEPS BACK AMID FAMILY HEALTH CRISIS.

Katherine stared at it.

"I did not step back."

The article quoted an unnamed company source saying Katherine had voluntarily taken temporary leave following an "emotionally difficult incident" at home.

It said Daniel would assume full executive authority until she recovered.

Rachel called the company's general counsel.

He did not answer.

Katherine called two board members.

One answered reluctantly.

His name was Henry Walsh.

He had known Katherine's father.

"Katherine, I was going to call you."

"Did I resign?"

Henry sighed.

"No one said resign."

"Did I request leave?"

Silence.

"Henry."

"Daniel told us you agreed to take a few weeks."

"Daniel lied."

Henry lowered his voice.

"There is a board meeting at ten."

Katherine looked at Rachel.

"About what?"

"Temporary management authority."

"Why wasn't I notified?"

Another silence.

"We were told you were medically unavailable."

Katherine felt the old version of herself rising.

The woman Daniel expected.

The one who would shout, accuse, and give him exactly the reaction he wanted.

She forced her voice to remain level.

"Send me the meeting notice."

"Katherine, maybe it would be better if you let things settle."

"Send me the notice, Henry."

He did.

The meeting was scheduled at Cole Development headquarters.

The agenda included an emergency resolution authorizing Daniel to exercise Katherine's voting rights "during temporary incapacity."

Attached was Dr. Pike's letter.

Katherine looked at Rachel.

"He is doing it today."

Rachel was already gathering files.

"Then we go to the meeting."

At 9:42, Katherine entered the headquarters lobby.

The receptionist looked startled.

"Mrs. Cole."

"Good morning."

"We were told you were not coming in."

"You were told incorrectly."

A security guard approached.

"Ma'am, your building access has been suspended."

Katherine held up the court order restoring access to jointly controlled business property.

Rachel handed him a copy.

"Interfere with her lawful access and you can explain it to the judge this afternoon."

The guard stepped aside.

Katherine walked toward the elevators.

Employees watched from behind glass walls.

Some looked concerned.

Some looked fascinated.

Some looked away.

On the twenty-second floor, Daniel's executive assistant stood outside the boardroom.

"Mrs. Cole, Mr. Cole asked that you not be disturbed."

Katherine almost laughed.

"He is discussing my authority."

"I understand, but -"

Katherine opened the boardroom doors.

Twelve people turned toward her.

Daniel sat at the head of the table.

Margaret sat beside the company's outside counsel even though she held no formal board seat.

Dr. Pike appeared on a large video screen.

Daniel looked at Katherine as if she had arrived at her own funeral unexpectedly alive.

"Katherine."

She walked to the empty chair bearing her name.

"You started without me."

Daniel stood slowly.

"This is not the right environment for you today."

"It is my company."

"It is our company."

"Then why did you tell the board I was medically unavailable?"

Daniel glanced around the table.

"Because I am trying to protect your privacy."

Katherine placed a folder in front of her.

"By publishing my supposed health crisis?"

Several board members shifted uncomfortably.

Margaret spoke.

"This is exactly the behavior we were concerned about."

Katherine did not look at her.

"You are not a director, Margaret."

Margaret's mouth tightened.

"I am here as family."

"Then you can wait outside as family."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Do not speak to my mother that way."

Rachel stepped forward.

"My client is entitled to attend."

The outside counsel raised both hands.

"Everyone needs to keep this professional."

Katherine looked at Dr. Pike on the screen.

"Doctor, how many times have you evaluated me?"

He cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Cole, this is not an appropriate forum for clinical discussion."

"How many times?"

"We met once."

"For how long?"

Dr. Pike hesitated.

"Approximately half an hour."

"Did I authorize you to diagnose me?"

"I offered a professional impression."

"Did I authorize you to send that impression to my husband's board?"

The room became silent.

Dr. Pike looked toward someone off-screen.

Daniel interrupted.

"This interrogation proves nothing."

Katherine turned to him.

"It proves you are trying to take control of my voting rights using a letter from a doctor your mistress paid."

The silence became absolute.

Daniel's face changed.

Margaret turned sharply toward Katherine.

Henry Walsh whispered, "What?"

Katherine opened Jonah's report.

"Pike Behavioral Health Consulting received one hundred and eighty thousand dollars through an entity linked to Ava Monroe."

Dr. Pike's image froze for a second.

Then his video connection disappeared.

Rachel smiled without humor.

"Interesting timing."

Daniel stood.

"This meeting is adjourned."

Katherine remained seated.

"You do not have unilateral authority to adjourn."

One board member looked at another.

The outside counsel read the emergency court order.

His expression became increasingly concerned.

"Daniel, were you aware of this order?"

Daniel said nothing.

"It says neither party may alter control over jointly held assets pending further hearing."

"The resolution is temporary."

"It is still a control change."

Katherine watched Daniel realize he had moved too quickly.

The board voted to postpone the emergency resolution.

It also voted to appoint an independent special committee to review recent financial transfers.

Daniel voted against it.

Katherine voted for it.

The motion passed seven to four.

When the meeting ended, board members avoided Daniel on their way out.

Henry stopped beside Katherine.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him.

"For what?"

"For believing him before I called you."

Katherine appreciated the apology less than she would have twenty-four hours earlier.

"Next time, call first."

He nodded and left.

Daniel waited until only Katherine, Rachel, Margaret, and the outside counsel remained.

Then he closed the boardroom door.

"You have no idea what you are doing."

Katherine met his eyes.

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

"You are destroying a company your father spent his life building."

"My father never forged my signature."

Daniel leaned forward.

"You think those transfers make me a thief?"

"Yes."

His jaw tightened.

"That money was being moved to protect it from you."

Rachel laughed once.

"That is an extraordinary defense."

Daniel ignored her.

"Katherine, you have been unstable for months."

"Say it again."

"What?"

"Say I'm unstable again."

Daniel looked confused.

Katherine reached into her bag and placed a small digital recorder on the table.

Daniel's eyes dropped to it.

She had turned it on before entering the room.

"You wanted recordings of me."

Her voice was almost calm enough to be gentle.

"Now I want recordings of you."

Margaret stood.

"This conversation is over."

Katherine looked at her.

"No, it isn't."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You really think you are winning because you found a folder?"

"I think you're frightened because I found it."

He stepped closer.

"You should be frightened."

Rachel immediately moved between them.

"Careful, Daniel."

He stared past her at Katherine.

"You want to know what is on the second phone?"

Katherine's heartbeat changed.

Daniel smiled.

He knew.

Ava had told him she called.

Or he had guessed.

"I know about it."

"Then you know enough to stop."

Katherine did not move.

Daniel took his own phone from his pocket.

"I can send one file and every person in this building will understand why I did what I did."

Rachel said, "Threatening to distribute unlawfully recorded private conversations would be a mistake."

Daniel's smile widened.

"Who said the conversations were private?"

He tapped the screen.

Katherine's phone buzzed.

So did Rachel's.

Then Margaret's.

Then the outside counsel's.

A message had been sent to the entire board.

The subject line read:

FOR YOUR SAFETY AND MINE.

Katherine opened the attachment.

Her own voice filled the boardroom.

"Sometimes I wish you would just disappear."

A pause.

Then another clip.

"I can't think straight anymore."

Another.

"Maybe everyone would be better off if I stopped trying."

Another.

"I hate you, Daniel."

The clips were real.

Katherine remembered saying each sentence.

But none had been spoken together.

The first came after Daniel mocked her mother's funeral arrangements.

The second came after forty hours without sleep during a foundation crisis.

The third came after a failed fertility treatment, when she had been talking about leaving a committee.

The fourth came during an argument in which Daniel had admitted reading her private messages.

Edited together, they sounded frightening.

Daniel watched her face.

"Still want to keep going?"

Katherine stared at the speaker.

Then she looked at him.

"More than ever."

Daniel's smile disappeared.

That afternoon, the edited audio reached the press.

By sunset, it had been played on television.

By nightfall, strangers were debating Katherine's sanity online.
