Chapter 4 - THE PERFECT WIFE PROBLEM

The life insurance policy changed the temperature of the room.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The court monitor photographed every page while Daniel stood in the doorway with his hands at his sides.

Katherine watched him carefully.

He looked angry now.

Not shocked.

Not confused.

Angry that the folder had been found.

Rachel turned toward him.

"Mr. Cole, do not leave the property."

Daniel gave her a cold smile.

"You are not law enforcement."

"No, but the court monitor is documenting evidence that may be relevant to fraud."

Daniel looked at the monitor.

"That folder could have been planted."

Katherine almost admired the speed of the lie.

"In your dressing room?"

"You had access to this house for years."

"I just arrived with a court officer."

Daniel shrugged.

"Then perhaps someone on your staff put it there."

Marcus stood near the bedroom entrance and heard him.

His face hardened.

Daniel noticed.

"You are fired, by the way."

Marcus did not move.

"You already fired me at three this morning."

The court monitor instructed everyone to stop arguing.

Rachel called the police financial crimes unit and reported the forged documents.

Because the folder had been discovered during court-supervised access, officers arrived within twenty minutes.

Daniel called his attorney.

Margaret arrived before the police finished photographing the safe.

She walked into the upstairs hallway like she still owned it.

Technically, according to the suspicious deed, she did.

She saw the leather folder and stopped.

Katherine watched her face.

Margaret recovered quickly.

"What is all this?"

Rachel answered.

"Documents bearing my client's forged signature were found hidden in Daniel's dressing room."

Margaret's gaze shifted to Daniel.

It was brief.

But it was not surprise.

It was warning.

Katherine saw it.

Daniel saw Katherine see it.

The silence between the three of them suddenly held more truth than any statement they had made all day.

A detective named Lena Brooks separated them for preliminary interviews.

Katherine told the truth in chronological order.

The transfers.

The forged deed.

The altered account authority.

The doctor's letter.

The hidden identity documents.

She did not mention the security recording until Rachel joined them.

Rachel placed a hand on the table.

"Before we discuss additional evidence, we want written confirmation that original copies will be preserved and that my client will receive a property receipt."

Detective Brooks nodded.

"Of course."

Katherine studied her.

Brooks was calm, direct, and noticeably unimpressed by the Cole name.

That helped.

Rachel told her about the recording.

Brooks's expression sharpened.

"You have audio of Mr. Cole discussing foundation transfers before the disputed transaction?"

"Yes."

"And discussing a plan to portray Mrs. Cole as mentally unstable?"

"Yes."

Brooks looked at Katherine.

"I need a copy."

Rachel agreed to provide one through formal evidence intake.

Across the hall, Daniel's voice rose for the first time.

"This is ridiculous."

Margaret said something too quietly to hear.

Daniel stopped.

Katherine realized his mother still had control over him in a way nobody else did.

At seven thirty, the police left with copies of the documents but made no arrest.

Rachel explained why.

"Financial fraud takes time to document."

Katherine looked toward Daniel's closed study door.

"He has time to destroy things."

"The court order prohibits that."

Katherine gave her a tired look.

"So did marriage vows."

Rachel could not argue.

They left the mansion with three suitcases, Katherine's jewelry box, several personal files, and a sealed property inventory.

Her wedding ring was still missing.

As they reached the front steps, Margaret followed.

"Katherine."

Rachel stopped beside her.

Margaret looked at Rachel.

"I want one minute with my daughter-in-law."

"Former daughter-in-law," Katherine said.

Margaret's jaw tightened.

"That remains to be seen."

Katherine turned toward her.

"Say what you came to say."

Margaret lowered her voice.

"You think finding some papers gives you power."

"They are not some papers."

"They are documents you do not understand."

Katherine stared at her.

"Then explain them."

Margaret's eyes became colder.

"Daniel has spent twelve years protecting you from decisions you were never equipped to make."

Katherine almost smiled.

"There it is."

"There what is?"

"The part where stealing from me becomes protection."

Margaret stepped closer.

"You brought money into this family."

Katherine waited.

"Daniel brought judgment, discipline, and a name that opened doors your parents' money could not."

Katherine felt no need to defend her parents to this woman.

Margaret continued.

"You were happy to let him lead until you became suspicious and difficult."

"Suspicious because he was cheating."

"One woman does not erase a marriage."

Katherine looked back at the mansion.

"No."

Then she looked at Margaret again.

"But fraud might."

Margaret's expression changed slightly.

"Be careful."

Rachel stepped forward.

"Is that a threat?"

Margaret ignored her.

"If you drag Daniel through court, every private detail of your life becomes public."

Katherine said nothing.

"Your failed treatments."

Katherine's face remained still.

"Your anxiety after your mother's death."

Still nothing.

"The medication you took for six weeks."

Rachel interrupted.

"Stop."

Margaret continued anyway.

"The board will hear all of it."

Katherine understood what she was doing.

Margaret was telling her how the smear campaign would work.

Not with one enormous lie.

With small truths twisted until they became a different story.

Katherine stepped closer until they were less than two feet apart.

"You should be more worried about what the board hears about you."

Margaret's smile disappeared.

"You have nothing."

"Your name is on the trust that received my house."

Margaret's eyes flickered.

"A lawful transfer."

"Then you won't mind explaining my forged signature."

Margaret looked at Rachel.

"Good night."

She walked back into the mansion.

Rachel waited until the front door closed.

"She knows exactly what happened."

Katherine nodded.

"I know."

They reached Rachel's townhouse near nine.

Jonah was waiting with another discovery.

He had traced one of the shell companies to an accounting service used by Bellamy House Events.

The event company where Ava worked.

"So Ava is involved in the money?"

Jonah lifted one hand.

"Maybe."

He opened a report.

"Three payments totaling two hundred and twelve thousand dollars went from Silver Pine Strategic Partners to an LLC registered to Ava Monroe."

Katherine stared at the figure.

"For what?"

"Consulting fees, according to the invoices."

Rachel looked at Katherine.

"Mistress payments."

Jonah shook his head.

"Possibly."

Then he clicked another line.

"But Ava also transferred one hundred and eighty thousand dollars of that money to someone else."

"Who?"

Jonah turned the screen.

The recipient was Pike Behavioral Health Consulting.

Dr. Warren Pike.

Rachel leaned back.

"So the event planner paid the doctor who wrote the mental health letter."

Katherine remembered Ava's phone call.

Stop looking at the money.

The money is not what he's most afraid you'll find.

"She knows more."

Rachel nodded.

"And she may be terrified."

At ten twelve, Katherine received an email from an anonymous account.

There was no message.

Only an attachment.

Rachel insisted they open it on an isolated computer.

The attachment was a photograph.

It showed Katherine asleep in her own bed.

The timestamp in the corner was from three weeks earlier at 2:17 a.m.

Daniel was not visible.

A hand was holding Katherine's passport beside her face.

Another photo followed.

Katherine's thumb was being pressed against a small electronic scanner while she slept.

Her stomach twisted.

"Who took these?"

Rachel clicked to the final image.

It showed Daniel standing beside the bed.

Ava was holding the scanner.

Katherine stared at them.

She had been asleep less than three feet away while they collected her biometric data.

Under the last photograph was a single sentence.

He said it was only for the accounts.

Rachel looked at Katherine.

"Ava sent this."

Katherine's phone rang from another blocked number.

She answered.

Ava was crying quietly.

"I didn't know about the insurance policy."

Katherine's blood went cold.

"What did you know?"

Ava took a shaky breath.

"Daniel told me you were going to be removed from the company for six months."

"Removed how?"

"He said you would be declared temporarily incapable of managing the trust."

Katherine looked at Rachel.

"Why were you helping him?"

Ava's silence lasted too long.

"Because he told me we were going to be together."

Katherine closed her eyes.

It was pathetic and infuriating, but it was not surprising.

Ava continued.

"He said once the trust was under his control, he would divorce you quietly."

"And you believed him."

"Yes."

Katherine's voice hardened.

"You came into my house while I was asleep."

Ava began crying harder.

"I know."

"You helped steal my identity."

"I know."

"You stood beside my husband in a bathroom while eighty people celebrated my marriage."

Ava whispered.

"I know."

Katherine wanted to hang up.

Rachel shook her head sharply.

Keep her talking.

Katherine forced herself to continue.

"You said the money is not what Daniel is afraid I'll find."

Ava stopped crying.

The silence changed.

"Ava."

"There is another file."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"What is in it?"

Ava breathed in slowly.

"Recordings."

Katherine's eyes narrowed.

"Of what?"

"You."

"What kind of recordings?"

Ava's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Daniel has been recording you for months."

Rachel wrote something on the legal pad and held it up.

WHY?

Katherine asked.

Ava answered.

"He needed clips where you sounded angry, confused, or afraid."

Katherine remembered arguments that seemed to begin from nowhere.

Daniel waking her at midnight to ask why she had moved documents.

Daniel accusing her of forgetting conversations that never happened.

Daniel repeating the same question until she raised her voice.

Ava continued.

"He edited them together."

Katherine felt sick.

"For the doctor?"

"For the court."

Rachel's face hardened.

"Where is the file?"

Ava ignored the question.

"You need to understand something."

"What?"

Ava's breathing became fast again.

"Daniel didn't plan to get caught with me last night."

Katherine frowned.

"Then why were you in the bathroom?"

"Because I was supposed to hide the banking folder before the toast."

"And the affair?"

"He wanted you to suspect us."

Katherine went still.

Ava continued.

"He wanted you angry."

"Why?"

"Because he planned to provoke you in front of everyone after the toast."

Katherine remembered Daniel's confidence in the office recording.

She won't stay calm.

Ava's voice cracked.

"But when you closed those doors, everything changed."

Katherine looked at Rachel.

"What changed?"

Ava whispered the answer.

"You trapped us before Daniel could hide the second phone."

Katherine felt the room tighten around her.

"What second phone?"

Ava said nothing.

"Ava, where is it?"

"It was in the bathroom when the doors opened."

Katherine remembered every detail she could.

The towels.

The counter.

The robe.

The champagne glass.

Daniel's white shirt.

Ava barefoot beside him.

Then she remembered Daniel bending down near the vanity while the guests reacted.

At the time she thought he was picking up his jacket.

Maybe he had been reaching for something else.

Ava whispered one final sentence.

May you like

"If Daniel still has that phone, he can destroy you with it."

The line disconnected.
