Chapter 3: The Woman Who Kept the Records

The anonymous source requested a meeting in the underground parking garage beneath Naomi’s law office.
Elena insisted on attending.
At exactly nine o’clock that evening, a black sedan pulled into the garage.
A woman in her late fifties stepped out.
Elena recognized her immediately.
Margaret Shaw had served as Conrad Vale’s executive assistant for more than twenty years. She had been present at every family event, every business dinner, and every important meeting.
“I wondered when you would come forward,” Naomi said.
Margaret held a thick envelope against her chest.
“I should have done it years ago.”
Inside the envelope were bank statements, private emails, settlement agreements, and medical reports.
Adrian had hurt other women before Elena.
Each time, Conrad’s attorneys had paid them to remain silent. Jobs were threatened. Reputations were ruined. Witnesses were intimidated.
Margaret had organized the payments.
“I told myself I was only following instructions,” she said. “But every time I protected them, I helped them find another victim.”
Elena felt sick as she looked through the documents.
“Why now?”
Margaret’s voice trembled.
“My daughter was at your wedding.”
Elena looked up.
“The wedding coordinator?”
Margaret nodded.
“Adrian threatened her when she refused to disable the cameras. She called me from the restroom, crying. That was when I understood that silence had never protected my family. It only protected his.”
Margaret handed Naomi a small digital recorder.
“This contains Conrad admitting that he ordered the destruction of financial records after federal investigators began asking questions.”
Naomi examined it carefully.
“With this, prosecutors can connect the financial crimes directly to him.”
A sudden sound echoed across the garage.
Tires screeched.
A dark SUV accelerated toward them.
Naomi pulled Elena behind a concrete pillar as the vehicle swerved past. The SUV struck Margaret’s sedan and sped toward the exit.
Security alarms began to ring.
Margaret stared after it.
“They know I took the files.”
Naomi called the police.
Within an hour, Margaret was placed in protective custody.
The attack had failed, but its message was clear.
Conrad Vale was no longer trying to protect his public image.
He was trying to eliminate the evidence.
The next morning, federal agents raided Vale Holdings.
Computers, hard drives, and financial records were removed from the company’s headquarters. Trading in Vale stock was suspended.
Adrian, still in custody, denied everything.
He claimed Elena had manipulated the security footage and created a conspiracy to steal his family’s fortune.
But then Lily’s mother contacted Detective Bennett.
The little girl had taken a short video on her mother’s phone before the ceremony. She had been pretending to film the flowers when Adrian entered the bridal suite.
The video clearly captured Adrian telling Elena:
“After tonight, your company belongs to us. You can cooperate, or I’ll make sure the world thinks you’re unstable.”
Lily had unknowingly recorded the threat that connected Adrian’s violence to the financial conspiracy.
When Elena watched the clip, she covered her mouth.
A child had captured the evidence that hundreds of powerful adults had ignored.
That evening, the federal prosecutor held a press conference.
Adrian Vale was charged with assault, fraud, conspiracy, witness intimidation, and attempted financial theft.
Conrad Vale was charged with fraud, obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and ordering the destruction of evidence.

But Victoria Vale had disappeared.
And according to financial records, she had transferred eighty million dollars overseas only hours before the wedding.
