Chapter 8 - THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The photographs were waiting on Ethan's hospital tray when Nora arrived.
Victoria sat near the window.
Richard Sloan stood beside her.
Neither looked pleased to see Mara.
David had stayed at the law office with a forensic technician copying the logs.
Caleb waited outside Ethan's room with the determination of a man who had accepted that his role was now unofficial security.
Nora walked to the tray.
There were eight photographs.
The first showed Nora and David leaving a hotel in Denver.
The second showed them entering a taxi together.
The third showed David placing his hand against Nora's back as they crossed a street.
The fourth showed them sitting in a restaurant booth.
The fifth showed Nora leaning toward him.
The sixth showed them entering the same elevator.
The seventh showed David outside Nora's hotel room.
The eighth showed the door closing behind him.
Nora stared at the photographs.
Then she laughed.
Richard frowned.
"You find this amusing?"
"Very."
Victoria's face hardened.
"Ethan deserves the truth."
"Then perhaps you should give it to him."
Nora lifted the first photograph.
"Denver compliance conference."
She held up the second.
"Airport taxi strike."
The third.
"I slipped on ice."
The fourth.
"Dinner with six people cropped out of the frame."
The fifth.
"He was showing me an audit report."
The sixth.
"We were staying on the same hotel floor with the rest of the team."
Then she lifted the seventh and eighth photographs.
"And this is the part where whoever built this became careless."
Richard crossed his arms.
"How?"
"Because David never came inside my room."
"The photograph shows otherwise."
"No."
Nora placed it beside the final image.
"It shows him standing outside a door and then shows a door closing."
Victoria's voice sharpened.
"Enough."
"Not nearly."
Nora zoomed in on the digital copy Mara had requested.
"Look at the room number."
Ethan leaned closer.
412.
Nora opened her calendar from the Denver trip.
"My room was 417."
Silence.
Mara smiled without warmth.
"Would you like to guess who was in 412?"
Richard did not answer.
Nora did.
"The regional audit director."
She looked at Victoria.
"A sixty-three-year-old woman named Barbara Knox."
Ethan looked at his mother.
"Where did you get these?"
Victoria's expression remained controlled.
"An investigator."
"Name."
"That is confidential."
"Not anymore."
"Ethan."
"Name."
Richard stepped forward.
"This is distracting from the real issue."
Mara turned toward him.
"The real issue being your presence in Victoria's office at 3:40 yesterday afternoon?"
Richard's face changed.
Just enough.
Victoria looked at him.
"What is she talking about?"
Richard recovered quickly.
"I went to retrieve board papers."
Nora watched Victoria.
Her confusion looked genuine.
"You were in my office?"
"For less than ten minutes."
"You told me you were already at the hotel."
"I was delayed."
Mara stepped closer.
"During that delay, a packet accusing Nora of financial theft was printed from your computer."
Victoria stood.
"That is impossible."
Nora almost believed her.
Almost.
"The server log says otherwise."
Richard laughed.
"Logs can be manipulated."
"They can."
Mara nodded.
"Especially by someone using a hidden root account."
Richard's eyes moved toward Ethan.
"This is exactly why you need an emergency proxy."
Ethan stared at him.
"Explain that logic."
"The company is under attack."
"By whom?"
"People inside compliance."
Nora folded her arms.
"Convenient."
Richard ignored her.
"David Lin copied protected corporate information to an external drive."
"To preserve logs someone was deleting."
"That is his story."
"And yours is that he became a criminal on the same day those logs implicated you."
Richard's voice rose.
"You are not an officer of this company anymore."
"Neither are you if Ethan fires you."
Ethan spoke quietly.
"Richard."
Richard turned.
"You're suspended."
The room went silent.
"You cannot do that while medically impaired."
"Watch me."
"The board must approve-"
"My employment agreement gives the CEO authority to suspend any executive pending investigation."
Richard's face darkened.
"Victoria?"
That single word told Nora everything.
Richard did not look at Ethan like the person who controlled his career.
He looked at Victoria.
Victoria noticed too.
Her expression hardened.
"Do not look at me."
Richard blinked.
"You asked me to protect the company."
"I did not ask you to use my office to print forged evidence."
Richard went pale.
"Forged?"
"Do not play stupid with me."
Victoria's voice became lethal.
For the first time since Nora had met her, Victoria sounded less like an enemy and more like a woman realizing someone had built a trap around her as well.
Richard glanced at Jonathan Dane, who had entered silently during the argument.
Nora had not seen him arrive.
Neither had Ethan.
Jonathan stood just inside the door.
He looked at Richard.
Richard looked back.
It lasted less than a second.
But Mara saw it.
Nora saw it.
And Victoria saw it.
"You two," Victoria said.
Jonathan's expression did not change.
"Victoria, this is not the place."
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
"What did you do?"
Her voice cracked against the room.
Richard stepped backward.
"We should leave."
Jonathan nodded.
That was the wrong move.
Victoria walked toward the door and blocked it.
"No."
Richard stared at her.
"Move."
"I have spent eighteen years listening to Jonathan tell me which threats were real."
Victoria looked from one man to the other.
"I have spent fourteen years listening to you tell me Ethan was too emotional to lead without me."
Her eyes filled with fury.
"And now I find out someone used my office, my credentials, and my name to manufacture evidence against Nora."
Nora did not interrupt.
This confrontation did not absolve Victoria.
Victoria had still called her a thief.
She had still sent security to remove her.
She had still tried to control Ethan.
But hatred did not require blindness.
Victoria had just discovered that the men closest to her might have been controlling her too.
Jonathan remained calm.
"You are upset."
"Do not patronize me."
"Then think."
His voice became softer.
"Who benefits from turning you against your own counsel?"
He glanced at Nora.
It was subtle.
Victoria saw it.
So did everyone else.
"You are blaming her?"
"I am asking you to consider timing."
Nora almost admired him.
Even cornered, he redirected.
Mara did not let him.
"Mr. Dane, you should know police are preserving Ethan's vehicle."
Jonathan's face remained still.
Richard's did not.
His right hand twitched.
Mara continued.
"If the brake line was tampered with, forensic testing will show it."
Richard looked toward the door.
Caleb was standing there now.
He smiled politely.
"Leaving?"
Richard cursed.
Jonathan stepped closer to Victoria.
"Move."
She did.
Not because he told her to.
Because suddenly she wanted both men out of the room.
Richard walked past Caleb.
Jonathan followed.
Before he left, he turned toward Nora.
"You are enjoying this."
Nora looked at him.
"No."
She meant it.
"I got married yesterday."
Jonathan's mouth tightened.
"I was supposed to be on my honeymoon today."
She pointed toward Ethan's hospital bed.
"Instead, my husband nearly died, someone framed me for theft, someone filed a lawsuit in his name while he was unconscious, and your client sent guards to remove me from my home."
Victoria flinched at the last sentence.
Nora did not soften it.
"I am not enjoying anything."
Jonathan left.
The door closed.
Victoria remained standing near the window.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Victoria turned toward Nora.
"I did commission the investigation."
Ethan closed his eyes.
Nora felt no surprise.
"I know."
"I believed you were dangerous."
"You wanted me to be dangerous."
Victoria looked at her.
"Perhaps."
It was the first honest word Nora had heard from her.
"Did you create the false bank statement?"
"No."
"Did you create the emails?"
"No."
"Did you tell Celeste to enter the hospital using my name?"
Victoria's face changed.
"She did what?"
Nora believed that reaction too.
Ethan spoke.
"Mother, how much authority did you give Celeste?"
Victoria sat slowly.
"Enough to help review the marriage risk."
Nora almost laughed at the phrase.
"Marriage risk."
Victoria ignored her.
"I asked her to coordinate the investigator and review any corporate conflicts."
"Did you give her my legal credentials?" Ethan asked.
"No."
"Access to Jonathan?"
"She already knew him."
Mara looked up.
"How well?"
Victoria frowned.
"Professionally."
"How long?"
"Years."
"Before she dated Ethan?"
Victoria hesitated.
Nora saw the answer before she heard it.
"Yes."
Ethan stared at his mother.
"You introduced us."
Victoria said nothing.
His expression changed slowly.
"You introduced Celeste to me because Jonathan recommended her."
Victoria's silence became an admission.
Mara looked at Nora.
The pattern widened again.
Jonathan had been near the family trust for decades.
Jonathan had known Celeste before Ethan did.
Jonathan had filed the forged annulment petition.
Jonathan had arrived to release Celeste after she impersonated Nora at the hospital.
Jonathan and Richard had exchanged a look the moment Victoria challenged them.
Nora's phone buzzed.
A text from David.
FORENSIC GUY FOUND SOMETHING.
Another message appeared.
WH-ROOT WAS CREATED 11 YEARS AGO.
Nora typed back.
BY WHO?
The answer arrived.
JONATHAN DANE.
After Victoria admitted commissioning the investigation, she and Nora were alone for less than two minutes.
It was enough.
Victoria stood near the hospital window while Nora gathered the photographs.
"I did not want him to marry you," Victoria said.
Nora kept stacking the images.
"That is obvious."
"I thought you were ambitious."
"I am."
Victoria looked at her.
Nora met her eyes.
"That word is not an accusation."
Victoria almost smiled.
Almost.
"You knew marrying Ethan would change your life."
"Of course."
"And you never wondered what it would give you?"
"I wondered what it would cost me."
Victoria's expression shifted.
Nora continued.
"I worried about reporters. About being reduced to his wife in rooms where I had earned my own seat. About people assuming every promotion came from him."
She lifted the fake affair photograph.
"I did not imagine you would help manufacture the answer."
Victoria looked away.
"I did not know they were manufacturing anything."
"You created the environment where they could."
That sentence landed harder than an accusation of forgery.
Victoria said nothing.
Nora left her by the window.
For the first time, Victoria had to confront a possibility she could not outsource to Jonathan.
May you like
Even if she had not built the weapon, she had aimed the room toward Nora and told everyone where to shoot.
