Chapter 3 - THE CALL SHE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO GET

Nora did not remember grabbing her coat.

She remembered Caleb taking the car keys out of her hand.

She remembered Celeste shouting that she was not wanted at the hospital.

She remembered ignoring her.

By the time they reached St. Matthew's, the sky had turned the color of wet concrete.

Nora had changed out of the wedding dress in the back seat while Caleb drove.

She wore black slacks, a white blouse, and the wool coat she had left in the car the night before.

The dress lay crumpled behind her.

She could not look at it.

The emergency department receptionist asked for her relationship to the patient.

Nora opened her mouth.

The answer should have been simple.

"I'm his wife."

The word sounded unreal.

The receptionist typed.

Then her expression shifted.

"I'm sorry."

"What?"

"There is a restriction on his visitor list."

Nora stared at her.

"A restriction?"

"Only his mother and Ms. Rowan are authorized."

Caleb leaned forward.

"She is his legal spouse."

"I understand."

"Then let her back there."

"I can't override the instruction."

Nora's anger returned so fast that it steadied her.

"Who gave the instruction?"

The receptionist hesitated.

"His emergency contact."

Nora already knew the answer.

"Victoria Whitmore."

The receptionist did not confirm it.

She did not need to.

Nora stepped away from the desk and called Mara.

"I need you at St. Matthew's."

"What happened?"

"Ethan was in a car accident."

Mara's silence lasted half a second.

"I'm coming."

Nora ended the call.

Caleb paced beside the vending machines.

"You married into a family that treats hospitals like private clubs."

"Not helping."

"I know."

A pair of elevator doors opened.

Victoria stepped out wearing a camel-colored coat and pearl earrings.

She looked immaculate.

Nora hated her for that.

Victoria saw Nora and stopped.

"What are you doing here?"

"Seeing my husband."

"You are not going near him."

"You don't get to decide that."

"I already did."

Nora walked toward her.

"What happened to the car?"

"He lost control in the rain."

"Was he alone?"

Victoria's eyes flicked toward Celeste, who had entered behind her.

Nora saw it.

"Was he alone?"

"That is none of your concern."

"He is my husband."

Victoria smiled without warmth.

"Temporarily."

Caleb stepped beside Nora.

"You might want to stop talking."

Victoria looked him up and down.

"And you might want to remember where you are."

"A hospital."

Caleb nodded.

"Not your boardroom."

Victoria ignored him.

She turned back to Nora.

"Go home."

"Which home?"

Nora's voice sharpened.

"The one you sent guards to remove me from?"

For the first time, Victoria looked annoyed that other people were listening.

"This is not the place."

"You made it the place when you blocked me from my husband's room."

A nurse approached from the corridor.

"Mrs. Whitmore?"

Both women turned.

The nurse looked between them.

"Ethan Whitmore's wife?"

Nora raised her hand.

"Me."

Victoria spoke at the same time.

"She is estranged."

The nurse frowned.

"Mr. Whitmore is awake."

Nora's heart lurched.

"Can I see him?"

The nurse checked a tablet.

"He asked for Nora."

Victoria's face changed.

It was small.

Almost invisible.

But Nora saw panic.

"He is medicated," Victoria said quickly.

"He does not know what he is saying."

The nurse remained polite.

"He identified his wife by name twice."

Nora looked at Victoria.

"Move."

Victoria did not.

The nurse stepped around her.

"This way, Mrs. Whitmore."

Nora followed.

She heard Victoria call Celeste's name behind her.

She heard Caleb say something that made one of the orderlies laugh.

Then the doors closed and the hallway became quiet.

Ethan was in a private room near the end of the corridor.

His face was bruised along the left side.

There was a bandage above his eyebrow.

One arm was strapped in place.

For one second, Nora forgot every accusation.

She forgot the papers.

She forgot Celeste.

She forgot the ring.

She saw the man she loved hurt in a hospital bed.

Then Ethan opened his eyes.

"Nora."

His voice was rough.

She stopped near the foot of the bed.

"You asked for me."

He tried to sit up.

Pain stopped him.

"The file."

Nora's chest tightened.

"Which file?"

"Blue."

She thought of Celeste.

"What is in it?"

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Don't let my mother get it."

Nora stared at him.

"Your mother is the one who gave you the packet about me."

His eyes opened again.

"Not all of it."

"What does that mean?"

"Nora, listen."

His breathing became shallow.

"I made a mistake."

"You left me on our wedding night."

"I know."

"You accused me of stealing from you."

"I know."

"You let your mother investigate me behind my back."

Ethan looked away.

That hurt more than if he had denied it.

"I thought she was protecting the company."

"From me?"

"From everyone."

"That is convenient."

"I was wrong."

"About what?"

Ethan looked toward the door.

His voice dropped.

"The packet wasn't meant to expose you."

Nora stepped closer.

"Then what was it meant to do?"

"Make me leave."

"Why?"

His jaw tightened.

"Because if I stayed married to you for thirty days, something changed."

Nora felt the room tilt.

"What changed?"

"Control."

"Control of what?"

Ethan's eyes met hers.

"Whitmore Capital."

The monitor beside him began beeping faster.

Nora barely heard it.

"Explain."

"My grandfather's trust."

"What about it?"

"There is a clause."

His eyes fluttered.

"Marriage triggers a transfer schedule."

"To me?"

"No."

He swallowed.

"To me."

Nora frowned.

"Then why would your mother want us apart?"

Ethan looked terrified now.

"Because once the schedule starts, she loses voting control."

Nora stared at him.

"She controls your shares?"

"Until I meet the trust conditions."

"And marriage is one of them."

"Thirty consecutive days."

Nora thought of the wedding.

The timing of the fake transfer.

The documents.

The immediate annulment.

Everything shifted into place.

"She needed you to believe I betrayed you before day thirty."

Ethan nodded weakly.

"I figured it out after I left."

"How?"

"The blue file."

"Where is it?"

"Home."

"Celeste came for it."

Ethan's eyes widened.

"Did she get it?"

"No."

"Good."

He reached for Nora with his uninjured hand.

She did not take it.

His hand fell back to the blanket.

"Nora, there is more."

"Of course there is."

"The accident wasn't an accident."

The door opened behind her.

Victoria stood there.

The color disappeared from Ethan's face.

His mother looked at him.

Then at Nora.

"He is confused," Victoria said.

Ethan's voice became a whisper.

"Check the brakes."

Victoria took one step into the room.

"Ethan."

He stared at Nora.

"Check the brakes before she gets the car."

Then his monitor alarm sounded.

The nurse rushed in.

Nora was pushed toward the hallway.

Victoria grabbed her arm.

Her fingers dug into Nora's skin.

"Whatever he said to you," Victoria whispered, "forget it."

Nora looked down at the hand gripping her.

Then she looked back at Victoria.

"You should have asked me that before you sent security to my house."

Victoria released her.

Nora stepped into the hall.

Mara was waiting beside Caleb.

Nora walked straight to her.

"I need an emergency order preserving Ethan's car."

Mara's expression sharpened.

"Why?"

Nora looked through the window at Victoria standing beside her son's bed.

"Because Ethan thinks someone cut his brakes."

When the nurse pushed Nora into the hallway during Ethan's medical alarm, she did not cry.

She stood with her back against the wall and counted each breath until the shaking in her hands stopped.

Victoria remained inside the room longer than she should have.

Through the narrow glass panel, Nora saw her bend close to Ethan and say something the monitors prevented Nora from hearing.

Then Victoria noticed Nora watching.

She straightened immediately.

That image stayed with Nora.

A mother leaning over an injured son should not have looked guilty merely because his wife could see her.

When Victoria came out, Nora asked one question.

"What did you say to him?"

Victoria adjusted the sleeve of her coat.

"That he should rest."

"Nothing else?"

"No."

Nora did not believe her.

But she also did not accuse her.

Not yet.

The old version of Nora might have pushed until the argument became the story.

The version standing outside Ethan's hospital room had learned something in less than a day.

A person who wanted to control the narrative often benefited when everyone else became emotional.

So Nora opened the notes app on her phone and wrote the time.

11:26 a.m. - Victoria alone with Ethan after brake comment.

Then she saved it.

Mara saw what she was doing.

"Good," she said quietly.

Nora looked at the closed hospital door.

May you like

"I'm tired of remembering things only after someone tells me they didn't happen."
