Chapter 2 — The Empire That Vanished

Nathan didn't return home until seventy-two hours later.

Camille had spent the entire weekend convincing him that Sophia would eventually forgive him.

"She loves you too much," she said as they drove toward the Brooks estate. "Women like her always come back."

Nathan believed every word.

He even smiled when the iron gates slowly opened.

Then the smile disappeared.

The fountain had been turned off.

Luxury cars that once filled the circular driveway were gone.

The Brooks family crest had already been removed from the entrance.

Inside, silence greeted him.

No butler.

No maids.

No security staff.

Only empty rooms.

"What the hell...?"

His voice echoed through the mansion.

He rushed into his office.

Every painting had disappeared.

The computers were gone.

The family safe stood open.

Inside was nothing except a single envelope.

His name was written across the front.

Nathan ripped it open.

One sheet of paper.

Three sentences.

Nathan Brooks,

Our marriage is over.

Everything you believed belonged to you never did.

He stared at the signature.

Sophia Sterling.

Before he could react, his phone exploded with incoming calls.

The first was from his Chief Financial Officer.

"Nathan... we're finished."

"What are you talking about?"

"The banks canceled our credit facilities."

"Our investors withdrew."

"The board voted this morning."

"You've been removed as CEO."

Nathan froze.

"That's impossible."

"It gets worse."

"The company has already been sold."

"To who?"

Silence.

Then one answer.

"Sterling Global Holdings."

Nathan's knees nearly gave out.

Sterling.

His wife's maiden name.

No...

It couldn't be.

He opened his laptop.

Every corporate filing confirmed the same truth.

The majority shareholder controlling Brooks Industries had never been his father.

Never the Brooks family.

It had always been Sophia.

For four years...

She had quietly rescued every failing project.

Negotiated every acquisition.

Protected every loan.

Without her...

The empire had survived only seventy-two hours.

Camille slowly stepped backward.

"You never told me your wife owned everything."

Nathan looked at her with empty eyes.

"I... didn't know."

That afternoon every financial news channel carried the same headline.

BROOKS INDUSTRIES ACQUIRED BY STERLING GLOBAL.

Nathan Brooks was no longer a billionaire.

By sunset...

He wasn't even employed.
