Chapter 3 - The Second Camera

Detective Rachel Shaw did not allow Victoria to leave the consultation room until she had watched the entire recording herself.
She stood near the monitor with her arms folded while Grant replayed the critical two minutes.
Victoria stopped protesting after the second viewing.
Instead she became calm.
Too calm.
Marcus noticed it immediately.
"Mrs. Cross, I need you to understand that this recording is now potential evidence," Detective Shaw said.
"I'm not Mrs. anything."
Victoria's voice was clipped.
"Noted."
The detective looked at Grant.
"Can you preserve the original card without making additional changes?"
"Yes."
"Do that."
Victoria turned to Marcus.
"Are you really going to let them treat me like a criminal?"
Marcus looked at the frozen image of the stroller tipping into the pool.
"What would you call it?"
Her eyes narrowed.
"A mistake."
Elena stared at her.
"You pushed him."
"I lost control of the stroller."
Grant almost spoke, then stopped himself.
Marcus did not.
"You disabled the patio cameras first."
"Because I was changing clothes by the pool."
"You were fully dressed."
"Earlier."
"You looked directly at the camera before you disabled it."
Victoria shrugged.
"So?"
Marcus's voice cracked.
"Then you watched him sink."
For the first time, something ugly surfaced in her expression.
"Four seconds."
She said it with contempt.
"You are acting like I stood there for an hour."
Elena moved before she realized she had.
Detective Shaw stepped between them.
"Ms. Ruiz."
Elena stopped.
Her hands were shaking.
"He was eight months old."
Victoria looked away.
"And he is alive."
"Because I went in."
"Exactly."
The word landed strangely.
Detective Shaw caught it.
"Exactly what?"
Victoria realized too late that she had revealed something.
Her mouth closed.
The detective leaned forward slightly.
"Did you expect Ms. Ruiz to jump into the pool?"
"I didn't say that."
"You said exactly after she said the baby survived because she went in."
"You're twisting my words."
"I'm asking you a question."
Victoria crossed her arms.
"I want an attorney."
Detective Shaw nodded immediately.
"Then we are done asking questions."
She signaled to the uniformed officer.
Victoria's confidence flickered.
"Am I under arrest?"
"At this moment, you're being detained while we secure evidence and speak to witnesses."
"That is not an answer."
"It is the answer you're getting right now."
The officer moved toward Victoria.
She looked at Marcus again.
"Ask Elena about the room."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Stop using her to distract from what you did."
Victoria smiled faintly.
"You think I'm distracting you?"
She leaned closer as the officer took her arm.
"Your late wife left you more than memories, Marcus."
Elena looked down.
Marcus saw it.
His stomach turned.
Victoria did too.
"See?"
She laughed softly.
"She knows."
Then the officer escorted her out.
The door closed.
Marcus turned toward Elena.
"What did you find?"
Detective Shaw raised a hand.
"Before anyone answers that, I need to speak with both of you separately."
Marcus ignored her.
"Elena."
Elena's eyes stayed on the floor.
"It isn't what she wants you to think."
"Then tell me."
"Not like this."
"My son almost died."
She looked up sharply.
"And I saved him."
Marcus stopped.
"I know."
"Do you?"
Her voice trembled.
"Because twenty minutes ago, you hit me because she pointed at me."
The accusation was deserved, and that made it harder to hear.
Marcus lowered his voice.
"You're right."
Elena blinked.
She had expected defensiveness.
"You're right," he repeated.
"I have no excuse."
The room became quieter.
Detective Shaw studied him without expression.
Marcus continued.
"I was terrified, and I let that terror turn into violence before I knew anything."
Elena's mouth tightened.
"Being terrified doesn't make what you did disappear."
"I know."
He swallowed.
"And if you want to report me, I will not stop you."
Detective Shaw looked at Elena.
"We will discuss that privately."
Elena nodded.
A nurse knocked on the door.
"Mr. Hale?"
Marcus turned immediately.
"Your son's doctor wants to speak with you."
His face lost all color.
He followed the nurse out.
Elena sat down slowly.
Detective Shaw remained.
"You don't work for him right now."
Elena looked confused.
"What?"
"For the next few minutes, forget that he pays you."
The detective pulled out a chair.
"You're a witness, you're injured, and you may also be a victim."
Elena stared at the ice pack in her hands.
"I don't want Theo taken away from him."
"That isn't what I asked."
"I know."
"Did Marcus Hale strike you?"
Elena's eyes filled, but she refused to let the tears fall.
"Yes."
"Once?"
"Once."
"Open hand or closed fist?"
"Open hand."
"Did you fall?"
"Yes."
"Did you hit your head?"
"My shoulder and hip."
Detective Shaw wrote it down.
"Has he ever hit you before?"
"No."
"Threatened you?"
"No."
"Has Victoria?"
Elena looked up.
That answer took longer.
"Not directly."
"Indirectly?"
Elena glanced toward the door.
"She told me three weeks ago that people who become too attached to other people's children usually end up disappointed."
The detective's pen stopped.
"What did you think she meant?"
"I thought she wanted me fired."
"Why?"
Elena looked toward the hallway where Marcus had disappeared.
"Because I found something in Isabel's room."
Detective Shaw waited.
Elena took a breath.
"Marcus's wife died fourteen months ago."
"I know."
"After she died, he locked her dressing room and private study."
"Why?"
"He couldn't deal with it."
Elena rubbed her bandaged wrist.
"A month ago there was a leak from the upstairs bathroom, and water started coming through the ceiling near the study."
"So you went inside."
"I had to move boxes away from the wall."
"What did you find?"
Elena hesitated.
"A blue envelope taped under the bottom drawer of Isabel's desk."
Detective Shaw's eyes sharpened.
"What was in it?"
"Copies of financial statements."
"Whose?"
"Victoria's."
The detective leaned back.
"Why would Marcus's dead wife have Victoria's financial statements?"
"I don't know."
"Did you read them?"
"Enough to see large transfers."
"From where?"
"A foundation account."
"Which foundation?"
Elena's voice dropped.
"The Hale Children's Fund."
Detective Shaw's expression changed.
Marcus's family foundation was one of the largest pediatric charities in the state.
Millions passed through it every year.
"Did you tell Marcus?"
"I tried."
"What happened?"
"Victoria came into the room while I was holding the envelope."
Elena swallowed.
"She took it from me."
"And?"
"She told me it was old paperwork and none of my business."
"Did you make copies?"
Elena shook her head.
"No."
"Did you tell anyone else?"
"Grant."
The detective's head lifted.
"The security guard?"
"I asked him whether the cameras outside the upstairs hallway worked."
"Why?"
"Because two days after Victoria found me with the envelope, someone entered my room while I was downstairs."
"Was anything stolen?"
"No."
"Then how do you know someone entered?"
Elena reached into the pocket of her wet uniform and pulled out a small silver button.
"I found this under my bed."
Detective Shaw took it.
The button was embossed with a tiny V.
Victoria's initials.
Before the detective could speak, the consultation-room door opened again.
Grant stepped inside.
His face was tense.
"Detective."
"What is it?"
"You need to see the access log."
He placed a tablet on the table.
"Someone logged into the security hub remotely nine minutes after the ambulance left the house."
Elena leaned forward.
"Who?"
Grant turned the screen.
The login had come from a device labeled VC-iPhone.
Victoria's phone.
Detective Shaw's eyes narrowed.
"What did she access?"
Grant scrolled.
"She tried to delete the pool footage."
Elena exhaled.
Marcus returned at that exact moment.
He looked pale but relieved.
"Theo is stable."
Elena closed her eyes briefly.
It was the first good news of the night.
Then Grant looked at Marcus.
"Sir, there is more."
Marcus stared at the tablet.
"What?"
"When Victoria tried to delete the pool feed, she opened another camera folder by mistake."
"Which camera?"
Grant's face tightened.
"The second hidden unit outside the upstairs hall."
Elena went still.
"The one near Isabel's room?"
Grant nodded.
Marcus looked between them.
"What second hidden unit?"
Grant tapped the folder.
A thumbnail appeared.
It showed the hallway outside Marcus's late wife's locked study.

The timestamp was from three nights earlier.
And in the frozen image, Victoria was standing at Isabel's door at 2:13 in the morning with a key in her hand.
