Chapter 15 - The Night Victoria Came Back

Victoria walked out of county detention at 9:18 p.m.

The cameras waiting outside caught her first public expression since the pool video surfaced.

She did not cry.

She did not smile.

She said one sentence before entering a black SUV.

"The truth will be more complicated than the story people were shown."

Marcus watched the clip on Daniel's phone and felt his stomach turn.

She was already building a second reality.

In the first reality, a camera had shown her pushing Theo into a pool.

In the second, she was a misunderstood woman trapped inside a conspiracy.

Marcus finally understood how she worked.

She did not need everyone to believe her.

She only needed enough people to doubt everyone else.

Detective Shaw called five minutes later.

"Do not go to the estate tonight."

Marcus looked out the city-apartment window.

"I wasn't planning to."

"Good."

"Theo is with me."

"Keep him there."

"Victoria has a monitor."

"Yes."

"You can see where she is?"

"Probation services can."

"That isn't what I asked."

"Marcus."

He stopped.

"Do not start tracking her yourself."

"I could."

"I know."

"I won't."

"Good."

Elena remained at her sister's home with a patrol car passing every hour.

She had discovered her passport copy was missing from the desk at the estate.

So was a photocopy of her Social Security card and an old voided check she had used for payroll enrollment.

The bank account in her name had been opened online using all three.

The deposits from Northline arrived three months later.

The money was withdrawn in cash through ATMs near locations Elena had never visited.

Detective Shaw told her the financial trail looked increasingly manufactured.

Elena did not feel relieved.

She felt violated.

Victoria had not only entered her room.

She had built a false Elena somewhere inside the banking system.

A woman who took bribes.

A woman who met Owen.

A woman who could be blamed when needed.

Elena sat at her sister Sofia's kitchen table staring at the fraudulent account records.

Sofia placed tea beside her.

"You need to sleep."

"I can't."

"You haven't slept since yesterday."

"Theo almost drowned yesterday."

"And he is safe now."

Elena looked up.

"Is he?"

Sofia had no answer.

The doorbell rang.

Both women froze.

Sofia looked through the peephole.

"Police."

Elena opened the door.

Officer Jenkins from the patrol detail stood outside.

"Ms. Ruiz, Detective Shaw asked us to move you."

Elena frowned.

"Why?"

"There was an attempt to access this building's resident directory from an outside device."

Sofia's face went pale.

"Can they get in?"

"Not through that system."

"Who tried?"

"We don't know yet."

Elena looked at the hallway camera.

"Victoria?"

"Her monitor places her at a hotel downtown."

Elena's expression tightened.

"Then someone else."

"Possibly."

The word had become the most frightening one in her life.

At Marcus's apartment, Theo woke crying at 10:07 p.m.

Marcus picked him up too quickly and nearly tangled the monitor cord.

The pediatric nurse corrected him.

"Slow."

Marcus looked at her.

"He's coughing."

"He's also angry because he dropped his pacifier."

Theo proved her right by grabbing it the moment she handed it back.

Marcus exhaled.

The nurse smiled faintly.

"Call the pediatrician first and panic second."

Marcus looked at her.

"Elena told you that?"

"It's written on the refrigerator."

He almost laughed.

Then the building fire alarm sounded.

The nurse's smile vanished.

A recorded voice instructed residents to evacuate.

Marcus looked toward Theo.

"Get the bag."

Grant, stationed in the hall with private security, entered immediately.

"We have a fire alarm on nineteen."

Marcus lived on twenty-two.

"Actual fire?"

"Unknown."

"Stairs?"

"Yes."

The nurse secured Theo in a carrier against Marcus's chest.

Grant opened the apartment door.

Residents were already entering the stairwell.

Smoke smell drifted faintly upward.

Marcus's pulse accelerated.

"Move."

They descended three floors.

On nineteen, firefighters pushed through the corridor.

No visible flames.

A sprinkler head had activated inside a utility room.

One firefighter shouted that the alarm might be malicious.

Grant's face changed.

"Back upstairs."

Marcus stopped.

"Why?"

"If the fire is fake, evacuation may be the point."

The stairwell was crowded.

Someone bumped Marcus's shoulder.

Theo started crying.

A woman in a hooded raincoat reached toward the carrier.

Marcus grabbed her wrist.

"Don't touch him."

She jerked away.

"I was helping."

Grant stepped between them.

The woman disappeared down the stairs with the crowd.

Marcus's heart pounded.

"Did you see her face?"

"No."

"Follow her."

"I'm not leaving you."

A second guard moved after the woman.

Marcus, Theo, Grant, and the nurse returned to the apartment under firefighter escort.

The door was open.

Marcus stopped.

"We locked that."

Grant drew back immediately.

"Stay here."

Security cleared the apartment.

Nobody inside.

No obvious theft.

Then Marcus saw the nursery bag on the kitchen counter.

It had been zipped when they left.

Now it was open.

The pediatric nurse checked the contents.

Bottles.

Diapers.

Medication.

One envelope that had not been there before.

Grant stopped everyone from touching it.

Police arrived within minutes.

Inside the envelope was a photograph of Elena entering the Hale estate on the day of the pool incident.

Across the bottom, someone had written:

SHE CAME BACK FOR THE MONEY.

Marcus stared at it.

"This is stupid."

Detective Shaw looked at him.

"Why?"

"Elena worked there. Of course she entered the estate."

"Agreed."

"It's trying to make something ordinary look suspicious."

Shaw nodded.

"Exactly."

Marcus looked at her.

"Victoria?"

"Her monitor says she has not left her hotel room."

"Can it be spoofed?"

"Not easily."

"That isn't no."

"No."

Grant checked the building-security feed.

"We have video of the person who entered your apartment."

Everyone gathered around the tablet.

During the evacuation, a man in a maintenance uniform entered using a master key.

He remained inside for ninety-one seconds.

His face was visible for only a moment.

Ruth, connected by video call, recognized him first.

"Aaron Vale."

Marcus stared at the screen.

"The county clerk?"

"Yes."

The same man whose name appeared beside a twenty-five-thousand-dollar payment in Victoria's ledger.

Detective Shaw immediately issued an alert.

"If he is working for Victoria, why leave a photograph that does nothing?" Marcus asked.

Elena answered through Shaw's speakerphone.

"Maybe the photograph isn't the point."

Marcus frowned.

"What is?"

"What did he take?"

The apartment was searched again.

At first, nothing appeared missing.

Then the nurse checked Theo's discharge folder.

His original hospital bracelet from the previous night had been clipped off at discharge and placed inside the folder as a keepsake.

It was gone.

Marcus felt cold.

"Why would anyone steal his hospital bracelet?"

Elena went quiet.

Then she asked a question.

"Does it have his medical record number?"

The nurse nodded.

"Yes."

"And date of birth?"

"Yes."

"Enough to impersonate a parent on the phone?"

The nurse's face changed.

"With other information, maybe."

Detective Shaw looked at Marcus.

"Call the hospital and lock Theo's chart."

They did.

Seven minutes too late.

Someone had already called the pediatric system pretending to be Marcus.

The caller had Theo's medical record number, date of birth, home address, and the name of his pediatrician.

They requested an emergency transfer of records to a private clinic.

The request had been approved electronically.

The receiving clinic was Northline Pediatric Recovery Center.

Grant searched the address.

His face went blank.

"There is no clinic."

"What's there?" Marcus asked.

Grant turned the screen.

The address belonged to an abandoned rehabilitation hospital on the edge of the county.

Detective Shaw stared at it.

"Why transfer records to an abandoned building?"

Marcus looked down at Theo.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Victoria's voice filled his ear.

"You should have married me when I asked."

Marcus went still.

"You're violating the no-contact order."

She laughed softly.

"Then call the police."

"They are already here."

Silence.

For the first time, Victoria sounded surprised.

Marcus continued.

"Aaron Vale was on camera in my apartment."

Victoria's voice became cold.

"I don't know anyone by that name."

"You paid him twenty-five thousand dollars."

Another silence.

Then she said something unexpected.

"Marcus, if Aaron Vale has Theo's hospital information, you need to listen to me."

"Why?"

"Because he does not work for me anymore."

"Anymore?"

"Find him before midnight."

"Why?"

Victoria's breathing changed.

May you like

"Because Aaron knows what really happened to Isabel."

The call ended.
