Chapter 11 - VANESSA FINALLY SAID WHY SHE DID IT

Daniel waited until Vanessa's attorney left the building before he called her personal number.
She did not answer.
He called again.
Then he sent the two gala photographs.
Thirty seconds later, his phone rang.
"Where did you get those?"
Daniel stood alone in his office.
"You knew Amy was pregnant."
"I knew she had an envelope from a maternity clinic."
"You pulled it out of her purse."
"It was sticking out."
"That is not an answer."
Vanessa exhaled sharply.
"I was looking for the donor cards."
"In my wife's purse?"
"Her bag was on the table with the event packets."
"Do not lie again."
Silence.
Daniel's voice became colder.
"You saw the envelope before the dance."
"Yes."
"Then you dragged me onto the floor."
"I did not drag you anywhere."
"You told the photographer to move."
Vanessa said nothing.
"You made sure Amy could see us."
"She already knew about us."
Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.
"You do not know that."
"She knew enough."
"Why?"
Vanessa laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
"Because I was tired."
"Of what?"
"Of waiting for you to make a decision."
Daniel stared at the city outside.
"There was no decision."
"There was always a decision."
Her voice sharpened.
"You spent months telling me you were lonely."
"I told you my marriage was struggling."
"You kissed me."
"I know."
"You slept with me."
"I know."
"Then you went home and pretended nothing happened."
Daniel shut his eyes.
"That was cowardice."
"Yes."
Vanessa's answer came instantly.
"And I decided I was done letting cowardice choose for us."
Daniel opened his eyes.
"So you humiliated Amy."
"I gave her the truth you were too afraid to give her."
"No."
His voice was low.
"You used her pregnancy to hurt her."
Vanessa inhaled.
"I did not know for certain she was pregnant."
"You knew enough."
"I thought if she finally saw what was happening, she would leave."
Daniel felt something turn in his stomach.
"And then what?"
"Then you would stop pretending your marriage could be repaired."
"You thought I would come to you."
Another silence.
"Eventually."
Daniel laughed quietly in disbelief.
"You watched my wife hand my mother her ring and thought you had won."
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"Do not make me sound monstrous."
"You leaked that she had a breakdown."
"I corrected a narrative before it destroyed the foundation."
"You created the narrative."
"Because I knew what the press would do."
"You told them she was jealous."
"She was jealous."
Daniel's expression changed.
"No."
He spoke the word with complete certainty.
"She was betrayed."
Vanessa went quiet.
Daniel continued.
"There is a difference."
"You are rewriting history because you feel guilty."
"I am finally reading it without your commentary."
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
"What do you want from me?"
"The truth about Miles."
"I already told you what I know."
"No, you told auditors what your lawyer approved."
Daniel sat at his desk.
"Tell me why North Coast Advisory paid your rent."
"Miles said it was a retention benefit."
"Why was it hidden?"
"Because he said the foundation board would not approve it directly."
"And that did not concern you?"
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Daniel, your company spent more than that apartment cost on flowers for one investor conference."
"That does not answer me."
"No, it did not concern me enough."
For the first time, she sounded tired rather than defensive.
"Miles handled money."
"Did he ask you to use your brother's company?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"He suggested it."
"For what?"
"Overflow PR work."
"Was the work real?"
"Some of it."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Some."
"Cole Strategic did campaigns."
"Worth two point four million?"
Vanessa went silent.
"Vanessa."
"No."
Daniel closed his eyes.
There it was.
"How much was real?"
"Maybe eight hundred thousand."
"Where did the rest go?"
"Miles controlled the subcontractors."
"And your brother?"
"He took a fee."
"How much?"
"I do not know exactly."
"Did you take money?"
"Not directly."
Daniel stared at the phone.
"Your apartment."
"Yes."
"Travel."
"Yes."
"Chicago."
Vanessa did not answer.
Daniel's face hardened.
"Was the hotel room paid through the foundation?"
"The suite was already booked for media meetings."
"Was the room where we slept together paid by charitable funds?"
Her silence answered.
Daniel felt physically ill.
The affair had already been a betrayal.
Now even the room carried stolen money.
"You need to tell the auditors everything."
"If I do, I could be charged."
"That is a conversation for your lawyer."
"You would let them prosecute me?"
Daniel almost could not believe the question.
"What did you think would happen?"
"You said you cared about me."
"I did."
"Then help me."
Daniel looked at Amy's wedding ring sitting in a small velvet box on his desk.
Margaret had returned it to him after the gala.
He had not opened the box in days.
"Helping you does not mean hiding what you did."
Vanessa's voice turned cold.
"You really are going to burn everything down for her."
"No."
Daniel looked at the audit files.
"I am burning down the lie that everything was fine."
He ended the call.
Vanessa stood in her Manhattan apartment staring at the dark screen.
Then she walked to a locked cabinet and removed a small external drive.
Miles had given it to her six months earlier.
Insurance, he had called it.
She had never opened it.
Now she connected it to her laptop.
There were hundreds of files.
Approval logs.
Vendor contracts.
Internal emails.
Scanned signatures.
And one folder labeled HARRISON PERSONAL.
Vanessa opened it.
Inside were copies of Amy's travel records, credit reports, old employment documents, and private correspondence from years earlier.
Vanessa's face changed.
She clicked one PDF.
It was the forged waiver.
The metadata showed the file had been created three days before the date Amy supposedly signed it.
The author field contained two initials.
MT.
Vanessa sat back.
Then she opened another file.
A memo appeared.
Contingency: if conversion rights challenged, characterize Amy Harrison as financially opportunistic and emotionally unstable.
Vanessa read the line twice.
The language was nearly identical to the story she had fed the press.
She had believed she was protecting herself.
Someone had handed her a script written years before the affair ever began.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Miles.
Delete anything you do not want investigators to misunderstand.
Vanessa stared at the screen.

For the first time, she became afraid of him.
