Chapter 14 - THE TRAP MILES WALKED INTO

Federal investigators copied the drive before sunrise.

The original remained sealed as evidence.

The contents were worse than anyone expected.

There were fake executive emails.

Altered approval logs.

Scanned signatures.

Vendor spreadsheets.

Payments to shell companies.

Private intelligence reports.

Draft smear campaigns against employees who asked questions.

And a folder containing contingency plans for Daniel himself.

If Daniel challenged the payments, Miles intended to portray him as an unstable founder whose personal scandals had impaired judgment.

If Daniel tried to remove Miles, emails could be leaked showing apparent authorizations of questionable transactions.

If Amy asserted conversion rights, the company would accuse her of exploiting divorce to seize wealth.

Everyone had a file.

Everyone had a story prepared for them.

Miles had not built one fraud.

He had built an ecosystem of explanations.

The problem was proving he controlled it.

The metadata helped.

Priya's screenshots helped.

Vanessa's drive helped.

But investigators wanted Miles speaking in his own words.

Vanessa agreed to cooperate after her attorney negotiated a proffer agreement.

She would not receive immunity automatically.

She would have to tell the truth.

Daniel did not participate in the negotiation.

That restraint did not come naturally.

His first instinct was to call the prosecutor.

His second was to call Vanessa's attorney.

His third was to demand to know exactly what deal she wanted.

Instead, he sat in a conference room with his own independent counsel and did nothing.

The lawyer across from him noticed the struggle.

"You are allowed to have an opinion."

Daniel looked at the legal pad in front of him.

"My opinions have been unusually expensive lately."

The attorney did not smile.

"Vanessa's cooperation could materially help prove the case against Miles."

"I know."

"It could also reduce her sentence."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I know."

"If Amy asks what you think, what will you say?"

Daniel looked through the glass wall at employees walking past.

"That Vanessa should tell the truth."

"And punishment?"

"Not my job."

The attorney studied him.

"That sounds rehearsed."

"It is."

Daniel leaned back.

"Because the unrehearsed version is angry."

He thought about the gala photographs.

Vanessa holding Amy's maternity envelope.

Vanessa moving the photographer.

Vanessa feeding the breakdown story to the press.

He also thought about Chicago.

His own hand on the hotel door.

His own decision to step through it.

Anger at Vanessa was easy when he focused on what she had done to Amy.

It became more complicated when he remembered what he had willingly done with her.

"I keep wanting one villain."

Daniel spoke quietly.

The lawyer waited.

"Miles is a criminal if the evidence is true."

He looked down.

"Vanessa manipulated Amy."

He swallowed.

"And I betrayed her."

The words no longer felt dramatic.

They felt factual.

"I cannot keep sorting people into guilty and innocent so I can find a category where I feel clean."

The attorney nodded slightly.

"That is probably wise."

Daniel almost laughed.

"I wish wisdom had arrived before federal investigators."

His phone lit with an image from Margaret.

Amy had apparently allowed her to share one photograph from a distance.

It showed a tiny knitted yellow hat on a table beside a folded baby blanket.

No Amy.

No location.

No medical information.

Just evidence that somewhere, his daughter's life was being prepared for without him.

Daniel stared at it until his vision blurred.

Then he put the phone face down.

He refused to ask for leniency.

He also refused to ask for punishment.

For once, he let consequences belong to the people who earned them.

Investigators designed a controlled meeting.

Vanessa would contact Miles and tell him the drive had not been deleted.

She would say Daniel had offered to protect her if she turned over everything.

Miles would be invited to propose another option.

The meeting took place in Vanessa's apartment.

She wore a recording device under her jacket even though New York law did not require Miles's consent for her to record a conversation she was part of.

Agents monitored from another unit.

Daniel was not there.

He wanted to be.

The agents refused.

That was probably wise.

At 7:04 p.m., Miles entered the apartment.

He did not remove his coat.

"Where is the drive?"

Vanessa sat on the sofa.

"Safe."

"That was not my question."

"Daniel knows about it."

Miles's face remained still.

"How much?"

"Enough."

"You gave it to him."

"Not yet."

Miles studied her.

"Why not?"

"Because I want to know what you can do for me."

That sounded enough like Vanessa that he believed it.

He walked toward the window.

"I can make this survivable."

"How?"

"The same way everything survives."

"By blaming Daniel?"

Miles smiled faintly.

"Blame is an emotional word."

"Then what word do you use?"

"Allocation."

Vanessa almost laughed.

"You forged his emails."

Miles turned.

"Be careful."

"You used his authorization token."

"We used executive delegation systems."

"You forged Amy's signature."

His expression changed.

"You do not need to understand that."

"I need to understand everything if I am going to prison."

Miles sat opposite her.

"You are not going to prison."

"Why?"

"Because you were doing what Daniel wanted."

Vanessa leaned forward.

"Did he want Amy's waiver forged?"

Miles sighed.

"Daniel wanted the conversion issue removed."

"That is not what I asked."

"He did not care how."

"Did he tell you to forge it?"

Miles was silent.

Vanessa pressed.

"Did he?"

"No."

The word was quiet.

Agents listening next door marked the time.

Vanessa continued.

"Did he know?"

Miles looked annoyed now.

"No."

"Then why fake the email?"

"Because memory changes under pressure."

Vanessa stared at him.

Miles continued with astonishing calm.

"If a document exists long enough, people begin to remember the decision instead of the act."

"You thought Daniel would eventually believe he authorized it."

"I thought everyone would prefer certainty to scandal."

Vanessa's stomach turned.

"And the vendor money?"

"Compensation."

"For you."

"For people who made the company function."

"You stole millions."

Miles's eyes hardened.

"Daniel built a twelve-billion-dollar company while everyone around him cleaned up his messes."

"So you paid yourself?"

"I corrected the imbalance."

Vanessa stared at him.

The grandiosity was almost more disturbing than guilt would have been.

"What about watching Amy?"

"Risk management."

"She was pregnant."

"Pregnancy does not make someone harmless."

Vanessa flinched.

"You had men follow her to a clinic."

"I had professionals determine whether she was meeting hostile investors."

"She was buying ginger tea and working in a bookstore."

Miles smiled coldly.

"That is what she wanted people to see."

Vanessa realized then that Miles truly believed everyone lived the way he did.

Every kindness was cover.

Every relationship was leverage.

Every person had a price or a weakness.

"What do you want me to do?"

Miles leaned forward.

"Destroy the drive."

"And then?"

"Sign a statement that Daniel directed all off-book PR spending."

Vanessa's mouth went dry.

"That is false."

"Parts of it are interpretive."

"He did not know."

"He did not ask."

"That is not the same thing."

Miles smiled.

"It was when you slept with him."

Vanessa went still.

Miles continued.

"You had no trouble benefiting from what he did not ask then."

Her face burned.

"And Amy?"

"What about her?"

"What happens to her conversion claim?"

"We release the instability file."

"It is fake."

"Some of it."

"And her baby?"

Miles shrugged.

"Children make sympathetic photographs."

Vanessa's eyes filled with disgust.

That was enough.

She stood.

"I need a drink."

She walked toward the kitchen.

The agents took the movement as the agreed signal.

There was a knock at the door.

Miles turned.

Vanessa did not.

"Who is that?"

She opened the refrigerator.

"Probably the part where certainty becomes scandal."

The door opened.

Federal agents entered.

Miles did not run.

He did not shout.

He simply looked at Vanessa with a kind of exhausted contempt.

"You have no idea what you just destroyed."

Vanessa looked back.

"I think I finally do."

Miles was not immediately arrested on every suspected offense.

He was detained for questioning and later charged with obstruction related to document destruction instructions and false statements tied to the investigation.

Additional financial charges would take longer.

The news leaked before midnight.

By morning, Harrison Freight's crisis became national business news.

Daniel stood outside federal court surrounded by microphones because investigators had requested his presence for an interview.

A reporter shouted the question everyone wanted answered.

"Mr. Harrison, did your own CFO impersonate you to steal millions?"

Daniel stopped.

"Investigators will determine the facts."

Another reporter shouted.

"Are you a victim?"

Daniel looked directly toward the cameras.

"Other people lost more than I did."

Then he walked inside.

Amy watched the clip from Oregon.

Her hand rested on her six-month belly.

Ruth sat beside her.

"He could have called himself a victim."

Amy nodded.

"He would have once."

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Teresa, the security officer.

We need to move you for a few days.

Amy's heart tightened.

Why?

Teresa replied.

A tabloid photographer just checked into the motel across the street.

Amy stared at the message.

Then another arrived from Elias.

Someone leaked your exact location.
