Chapter 3 - The Ledger Upstairs

Adrian Shaw had been Marcus's chief financial officer for nine years.

He had also been the best man at their wedding.

When Isabella heard his name through Daniel's radio, a memory surfaced with brutal clarity.

Adrian had stood beside Marcus at the altar and smiled while promising Isabella's father that he would always keep Marcus grounded.

Now he was trapped inside a restricted executive office minutes before an emergency board vote.

That was not coincidence.

"Bring him down," Evelyn said.

Marcus stepped in front of Daniel.

"No."

Every face turned toward him.

He realized the mistake immediately.

"I mean there is no reason to turn this into a spectacle."

Evelyn closed the portfolio.

"It became a spectacle when your mistress walked through a hotel lobby wearing your wife's robe."

Lydia flinched.

Marcus ignored her.

"Adrian is the CFO."

"And the executive floor is under preservation order."

"He has access."

"Not anymore."

Daniel spoke into his radio.

"Escort Mr. Shaw to Conference B on the lobby level."

Marcus reached for his phone.

Evelyn held out her hand.

"Do not call him."

"You cannot confiscate my phone."

"I did not ask for it."

Her voice remained calm.

"I advised you not to create another discoverable communication before counsel arrives."

Marcus stared at her.

For once, he followed advice.

Five minutes later, the private elevator opened.

Adrian stepped out between two security officers.

He wore a tuxedo from the anniversary gala upstairs, but his bow tie hung loose and sweat darkened the collar of his white shirt.

In his right hand, he carried nothing.

In his left, he carried nothing.

That was what made Isabella suspicious.

Adrian never entered Marcus's office without his leather ledger case.

He had carried the same case for years.

"Where is your bag?" Isabella asked.

Adrian looked at her.

"What bag?"

She saw the lie before he finished speaking.

"Your ledger case."

Marcus cut in.

"Isabella, enough."

"Where is it?"

Adrian's eyes moved toward Marcus for a fraction of a second.

That was answer enough.

Evelyn saw it too.

"Daniel, secure the chairman's office and every adjacent room."

Marcus exhaled sharply.

"For God's sake."

Evelyn turned to Adrian.

"Mr. Shaw, why were you on the executive floor after access was suspended?"

"I didn't know it was suspended."

"The elevators required an override."

"My credentials still worked."

Daniel shook his head.

"No, they didn't."

Adrian looked at him.

Daniel continued.

"You used a maintenance override code."

The lobby seemed to shrink around them.

Adrian's face lost color.

Marcus stepped closer.

"This is not a police interrogation."

"No," Evelyn said.

"It is a corporate preservation issue."

"Then let corporate counsel handle it."

"I am corporate counsel for the controlling asset group."

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

Isabella had seen him angry many times.

This was different.

Anger made him louder.

Fear made him organized.

He was watching every door, every phone, every face.

He was calculating.

"Adrian," Isabella said.

"Why were you in his office?"

Adrian swallowed.

"Marcus asked me to get a file."

The words fell into the room like broken glass.

Marcus's head snapped toward him.

"I did not."

Adrian stared.

"You texted me."

"No, I didn't."

"At eleven nineteen."

Evelyn held out her hand.

"Show me."

Adrian reached into his pocket.

Marcus moved first.

"Don't."

That single word was enough to make Daniel's hand drift toward his radio.

Adrian slowly removed his phone.

He unlocked it.

Then he showed Evelyn a message.

Isabella watched her eyes move across the screen.

"From Marcus Mercer," Evelyn read.

"Go to my office."

She continued.

"Get the blue acquisition ledger and the Westbridge side letters."

Marcus shook his head.

"That is fake."

Adrian stared at him in disbelief.

"You called me ten seconds later."

"No."

"Marcus."

"I said no."

Adrian's expression hardened.

Something old moved between the two men.

Not loyalty.

Not friendship.

Fear.

Isabella stepped closer.

"What is the Westbridge ledger?"

Neither man answered.

"Marcus?"

He looked at her.

"A financing file."

"For what?"

"A property deal."

"Which property?"

"Westbridge."

"There is no Westbridge hotel."

"Because we didn't close it."

Adrian looked down.

Isabella saw the movement.

"You did close something."

Adrian remained silent.

"What did you close?"

Marcus stepped toward her.

"Stop."

She turned on him.

"You threw me out of a building my family owns."

Her voice stayed quiet.

"You put my mother's brooch on your mistress."

Lydia looked away.

"You grabbed my wrist in front of cameras."

Marcus's face tightened.

"And now your CFO is using maintenance codes to retrieve hidden ledgers while an ownership audit begins."

She moved closer.

"So no, Marcus."

"I am not going to stop."

Adrian sat down suddenly in a lobby chair.

He looked exhausted.

"It was supposed to be temporary."

Marcus's expression changed.

"Adrian."

"I thought you'd replace it before year-end."

"Shut up."

Daniel's eyes widened.

Lydia took another step away from Marcus.

Isabella felt her pulse accelerate.

"Replace what?"

Adrian pressed both hands over his face.

"The reserve."

Evelyn became very still.

"Which reserve?"

Adrian lowered his hands.

"The Bellamy renovation reserve."

Isabella knew the number immediately.

Forty-eight million dollars.

The reserve had been established after the last refinancing to renovate three older properties and cover mandatory structural work at the Bellamy Grand.

She had reviewed the capital plan herself.

"How much?" she asked.

Adrian did not answer.

"How much is missing?"

Marcus spoke through clenched teeth.

"Nothing is missing."

"Then answer."

Adrian whispered the number.

"Thirty-one million."

The lobby disappeared around Isabella for one terrible second.

Thirty-one million dollars.

Not lost.

Not spent on approved work.

Moved.

"Where?"

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus's stare could have cut steel.

"Where did it go?" Isabella asked again.

Adrian's voice cracked.

"Westbridge Capital Partners."

Evelyn frowned.

"Who owns Westbridge?"

Adrian said nothing.

Marcus turned away.

That was when Isabella knew.

The answer would not be a bank.

It would not be a vendor.

It would not be a legitimate investment partner.

"Who owns it?"

Adrian looked at Lydia.

Lydia's face went white.

She shook her head before anyone said her name.

"No."

Isabella stared at her.

"Lydia?"

"I don't own anything."

Adrian stood.

"It is registered to Cross Meridian Ventures."

Lydia backed into a marble column.

"I have never heard of that."

Marcus turned on Adrian.

"You are confused."

"No, I'm not."

"You're drunk."

"I had one glass of champagne."

"Then you're panicking."

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"Of course I'm panicking."

He looked at Isabella.

"He told me the transfer was bridge financing."

Marcus pointed at him.

"Be careful."

"He said Lydia had access to a development parcel and we would double the money in ninety days."

Lydia's mouth fell open.

"Marcus told me he was buying me an apartment."

Everyone went silent.

Marcus closed his eyes for half a second.

Lydia looked at Isabella, horror replacing arrogance.

"He said he was buying the Westbridge penthouse for me."

Isabella almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

"With renovation money from my family's hotel?"

"I didn't know."

"You were wearing my mother's brooch."

Lydia's eyes filled, but Isabella did not soften.

"Do not confuse ignorance with innocence."

Evelyn interrupted.

"We need the ledger."

Daniel spoke into his radio.

"Search the chairman's office and adjoining rooms."

Adrian shook his head.

"You won't find it."

Marcus stared at him.

"Why not?"

Adrian looked confused.

"Because it was gone when I got there."

A new silence fell.

Isabella felt the hairs rise on her arms.

"Gone?"

"The safe was open."

Daniel frowned.

"Who opened it?"

"I don't know."

"Was anything else missing?"

Adrian nodded slowly.

"The blue ledger."

"And?"

He looked at Marcus again.

"The original management agreement."

Evelyn's face hardened for the first time all night.

That document was one of the few originals proving the exact limits of Marcus's authority.

Copies existed.

Digital records existed.

But the signed original carried evidentiary weight in any emergency challenge.

"Who else knew where it was?" Isabella asked.

Adrian's eyes moved across the lobby.

Then he looked toward Lydia.

Lydia shook her head violently.

"Not me."

Marcus said nothing.

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

"Check every exit."

Daniel raised his radio.

Before he could speak, a guard rushed in through the service corridor.

"Director Cho."

Daniel turned.

"What?"

"Loading dock camera just caught someone leaving with a blue document case."

"Who?"

The guard hesitated.

Then he looked directly at Isabella.

"Your father's driver."

The world tilted again.

Isabella stared at Evelyn.

"My father's driver?"

Evelyn's face had gone pale.

Marcus began to smile.

For the first time since the Midnight Protocol began, he looked relieved.

May you like

"Well," he said softly.

"Maybe you should ask who is stealing from whom."
