Chapter 16 - The Secret on the Settlement Page

The page concerned a complaint filed against Helena's former investment business years earlier.
Camilla had been a young employee at the time.
The document referred to allegations of financial misconduct and retaliation, and it imposed confidentiality obligations on the parties.
Julian had cropped the image to make the accusations appear to concern my mother.
Elena obtained the full document through proper legal channels.
The uncropped version told a different story.
My mother had helped fund the claimant's independent representation.
She hadn't settled a claim against herself.
She had helped someone challenge Helena.
I stared at the date.
The case had concluded just before Julian proposed to me.
It explained why Helena resented my mother.
But it still didn't explain Camilla's place in the story.
When asked, Camilla admitted she'd known of the earlier case.
Her sister Serena had worked for a company connected to the dispute.
Camilla had spent years trying to convince herself that the powerful people around her would eventually protect her.
Julian had exploited that hunger just as he exploited my need to believe our marriage was real.
The difference was that we had made our own decisions along the way.
Camilla was responsible for hers.
I was responsible for mine.
The people harmed by the scheme deserved more than our explanations.
At Aurelia, we announced the independent review's first limited findings.
We confirmed that certain vendor controls had failed, that financial reporting would be corrected where necessary, and that affected employees could speak to investigators without retaliation.
We didn't release names or accuse people beyond what the evidence supported.
A few shareholders complained that the statement lacked drama.
The staff welcomed something different: concrete deadlines.
We published a timeline for improved approval controls, independent reporting, and customer service commitments.
The harder part was my private life.
My divorce attorney asked if I wanted to pursue the maximum possible public humiliation for Julian.
“No,” I said.
“I want to stop spending my life reacting to him.”
That night I stayed in my mother's old study.
I read her letters again and understood something that had eluded me for years.
She hadn't been preparing me for a perfect life.
She had been preparing me to make difficult decisions without her.
Near midnight, Grace called to say Thomas had found one final archived letter.
It was addressed to Helena Vale but never sent.
My mother had written, You may take my investment, but you will never take my daughter's choice.
I pressed the page against my chest.
Then Elena's name flashed on the phone.
Julian had just offered to cooperate with investigators.
In exchange, he wanted protection for someone else.

The person he named was Malcolm Reed.
